If anything, the standard of the league has actually dropped markedly over the past 5-7 years.
In the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s you virtually had all the NZ Breakers playing in the NZNBL (plus kiwis in Australian NBL teams) and then you had some unbelievably talented imports (guys coming over with really good D1 stats/borderline NBA). Guys like Devendorf, Jerry Smith, Torrey Craig, Josh Pace, Garry Hill-Thomas (who was ridiculously good). The NZNBL have opted to sign Australians as imports over the past few years - still great players but they don’t obviously have that same appeal and star-power.
