Could Brad Newley return to the 36ers?

Press Release from Basketball Australia The Australian Gems U19 women's team have taken the opening game of the FIBA Oceania Championships against New Zealand in Broadmeadows, Victoria on Friday night 70-41. The best of three series will determine the Oceania representative at the FIBA World Championships for Junior Women to be held in Tunisia in 2005. It was a close game in the opening stages with the Aussie girls up by only three points at the half time break 29-26. The Gems seemed nervous in the opening stages of the game and although they played well offensively, they shot poorly. The Gems came out firing in the second half after getting over their jitters. They outscored New Zealand by 21 points in the third quarter, piling on 27 points to their oppositions six. The scoring spree quietened in the final term with the Australians scoring 14 points to the New Zealanders nine, bringing the final score to 70-41. Our goal was to keep them to 40 points in the game, Gems coach Phil Brown said after the game. Although the team was nervous early in the game I was happy that we were able to set up the win with a consistent defensive effort throughout the game. We were a little inconsistent offensively, but overall I am happy with the win, he said. Brown also commented that he was impressed with the New Zealand teams patience and how they stuck to their game plan. The Gems European tour stars shone again in Fridays game with Jenna OHea, Christina Fox and Kathleen McLeod all playing major minutes and having terrific games. Australian top scorers: OHea 22 (10 rebounds), Fox 15, Camino 10 (9 rebounds), McLeod 7 (7 assists, 5 rebounds) New Zealand top scorers: Chelsea Terei 12 (3/7 3 pointers), Michaela Cocks 10 (5 rebounds), Aroha Jennings 7 (6 rebounds) The Gems play New Zealand in Game Two on Saturday night at 7.30pm at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium. If the Australians win tomorrows game they will advance to the 2005 World Championships. If New Zealand are able to turn the tables on tonights result, the series will stay alive with the decider to be played at 2pm on Sunday.
