Olympics: Boomers vs USA thread
XY
I can't really blame him for the effort though. He has had next to no minutes this tournament, bit excited to finally be out there probably.

shin splits
Bird and MJ did that in NBA games, after they had won plenty of championships. They had earned the right to talk shit in my opinion.
When they played in '92 with the Dream Team, they were gracious to their opponents even though they were winning by 50. I do not see that with Lebron.
Boozer seems like a bit of a tool as well I thought.

Now to the Future...it looks very bright indeed!
Here's just a sample of who could ine up at the 2010 World Championships and 2012 London Games:
Bogut (C) - NBA
Andersen (C/F) - Europe
Jawai (C/F) - NBA
Ogilvy (C/F) - NCAA now, likely to be in the NBA
Maric (c) - Europe
Baynes (C) - NCAA now, Likely to be in Europe
Newley (G) - Europe, maybe NBA
Mills (G) - NCAA now, likely to be in NBA
Barlow (G/F) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Ingles (G) - Likely to be in NBA or Europe
Worthington (F) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Bruce (G) - Likely to be in NBL or Europe
Nevill (C) - NCAA now, likely to be in Europe
I'm salivating at the thought!
We can still finish 5th though at THESE Olymopics - Go Boomers!

Agree with you EC. The US came out really hard tonight and didn't let up until the game was iced. They wouldn't have done that if they didn't respect Australia's ability. Kobe especially brought his A game in the 3rd and showed how a great player can break a game open.

Decent effort by the guys, but we just couldn't match them on the boards. As someone said earlier, Lebron, Kobe and Wade were getting in to grab rebounds at will. Thats partly our guards fault and partly the one of the flaws of playing a zone.
Also, our bigs were clearly over matched strength wise by Bosh, Howard and Lebron. As a result they were too busy putting a body on their guy and consequently were not in position to 'go get' the rebound, which was usually grabbed by the more athletic US wings.
I think our energy dropped in the 3rd, so our cuts stopped and our offence stagnated. Kobe really got in a groove there and showed how to blow a game open.
Disappointing that Bogut was not able to have much impact. He has struggled with the way the intl game is called and foul trouble has hampered him a lot in this tournament.
The people who are bagging him need to understand the type of player he is though. He doesn't run around the NBA dunking over guys like Howard and Bosh. He has an impact by playing a role within a structured offence. To do that, he needs to be given the ball in the right positions, and he needs to have guys making good cuts and spreading the floor to give him passing options. If you were expecting him to score 20 by posting up Howard all night you've got the wrong idea.
Also, the game was over at the point Bogut went down with his ankle. If we were still in it, I'm sure Bogut would have tried to play on.
Anyway, lots to build on with this team. If Mills can learn to run an offence, as well as blow by people at will in the next two years, he will make everyone on this team better for the World Champs. Newley is an excellent backcourt partner for him. With experience, those guys should be one of the top backcourts in intl play over the next 8 years. Barlow was solid and Ingles keeps showing enormous potential, but needs to get in the gym to build his strength and show some real consistency in the NBL next year.

Ingles line.
10 minutes.
11 points.
100 percent from the field.
3/3 from outside.
2 rebounds.
1 assist.
1 steal.
4 fouls.
DB5's line.
Why only now?

He looks like what they would have chiseled from rock when someone said " hey, this is what a 'baller looks like".

Their arrogance in a way was a compliment to the Boomers' ability. I say that because they looked like they needed to advertise the fact that they were a superior team. If they hadn't rated Australia that well, there would have been no need for them to emphasise that.

I am in awe of Lebron's talent.
Every time I watch him during these Olympic games, it's like wow!
Yet I perceive him to be such an arrogant, seemingly ignorant man-child. In my personal opinion, he really typifies the ego driven, "look at me" American attitude that is stereotyped throughout the media.
He could possibly be one of the best ever players of his game statistically, but he will never have the gracious attitude of the very best..Magic, Michael, Larry, Bill etc. Even to our very own A.Gaze.
Pity.

Well, that was disappointing. We got killed in offensive rebounds...but the positives are that Mills and Newley did great jobs, with a few more years Euro experience for the team combined, we may start challenging for a medal...

Impressed with Newley taking it very hard to the rack.
Ingles is super impressive with his lack of fear this game.

anon true.
Ingles and Redhage 7:01 total minutes combined
13 points without a miss..
Get it boy goorj??

Mills is fantastic...just needs a reliable jump shot and a bit of restraint and he's an NBA starting point guard for mine.

23 points...sigh. Come on lads, make it respectable.

Getting blown out now. Not playing smart ball this quarter. Movement has stopped.
Loved Matty Nielsen though - borrowing the patented Paul Pierce step back and draw the foul on the jumper.

Anstey you ASS!!!!
As if you didn't swing that pass to CJ open in the corner..AAArgggghh.

HAH!
Anstey big rejection on Howard...take that.

We really need to box out their guards. Number 10 has 5 rebounds (4 offensive), number 9 has 6 rebounds, and number 7 has 7 rebounds.
Sorry about the numbers, I am taking the Boomer tactic onboard.

and another ones gone, another ones gone, another import bites the dust.
Cairns Tiepins have today released Marcus Timmons.
Making life very interesting for those of trying to run fantasy leagues :)

Yeah, agreed, we needed to hold the ball for the final shot and get a good one. Aside from a stretch in the 2nd where we got suckered into run and gun, our guys are doing a good job of not playing too fast. Need more of that.
When they get out on the break, reminds me of Lakers blowing Celts off the floor early on in the '84 Finals with showtime... just needed a McHale clothesline. Worthington your mission is clear!

Anstey was awesome in 1st quarter. Barlow solid. Bogut OK, Neilson OK, CJ solid, Newley awesome. Say-ville was even OK to my surprise. Ando playing well but needs to finish-here has let us down in that area.
Mills awesome except right near the end of half. Would like to see Redhage injected in third to rack up a few hard fouls on Lebron and Melo.

Arghhhh! Aussies playing well but need to box out on the defensive end, hit their open layups. Apart from that they are playing really well. Really taking it to the USA.

Andersen has been jumping at shadows too much tonight. He has missed several bunnies under the basket just cause he is paranoid about getting blocked. Needs to just take the shot, if it gets blocked, big deal.

"REminds me of that "Worthington has NO GAME" thread"
Started by yours truly after the Sixers whooped them last season =D

Nah, one of the yank commentators on the stream.
It's on Ch 7 now.

ahahahah!
"Worthington is a guy that has no value to the Australian team, except maybe to get one of the American players thrown out"

A few quick TO's and the USA score on the break - they now lead by 7.
Mills has been great. Anstey needs to come back on he was playing great in 1st quarter.

USA gunning it now with quick fast breaks, Australia turned it over a couple of more times.

Go Mills!
Dude is a gun.

Good 1st qtr guys. LOL for US free throw shooting... how do they miss so many?!?!

Fricken softball......serious channel 7......you are a disgrace
Patty Mills ......u are a star son
This Olympics will get him a gig in the NBA for sure

Patty Mills! that was sweet. Although the commentators have a point, everything he does is full throttle, he needs to slow it down.
USA 25-24 at the first break.

Hmm...I'm watching that and I wasn't warned. Using Firefox though...

Don't be too hard on Channel 7, at least this softball game is to determine the medal match...hopefully they go live afterwards.

I have a decent feed here - full screenable too!
