Boomers to play in Las Vegas Summer League

If possible, would also like to see Brett Maher, assistant coach.

I'd like to predominantly see some younger guys play - guys that may have a chance of getting a gig in either the NBA or Europe.

Here are some thoughts:

Mark Worthington
David Barlow
Luke Schenscher
Aaron Bruce
Adam Gibson

Depending on NBA/Euro status:

Patty Mills
AJ Ogilvy
Luke Nevill
Aron Baynes
Joe Ingles
Alex Loughton

I'm still undecided as to whether I would want guys like CJ Bruton or Chris Anstey to play. I guess only if they commit to the World's next year. And if that is the case, then guy's like Ballinger and Redhage also come into play.

I think the Boomers playing Summer League does a lot for promoting our players and our national team.

We have a few guys who could benefit individually from the Boomers playing in this competition. How often do the Boomers normally play in any case? Just a 2-games series against New Zealand!

Grabed this from Australia Basket in relation to who is likely to play:

NBL Stalwarts David Barlow (205-F-83, college: Metro St.) and Mark Worthington (202-F-83, college: Metro St.) will finally get their chance to show their skills in front of NBA scouts this July when the Australian National team takes part in the prestigious NBA Summer League held in Las Vegas.
Andrew Bogut (212-F/C-84, college: Utah), Brad Newley (199-G-85) and Nathan Jawai (207-C-86, college: Midland CC) have NBA contracts and are not expected to suit up for the Boomers, however College stars Andrew Ogilvy, Patrick Mills (183-G-88) and Luke Nevill (218-C-86) may get an opportunity depending on their staus due to the NBA Draft. Matthew Nielsen, David Andersen and Joe Ingles (203-G/F-87, agency: Priority Sports) are almost all certain to have obligations in Europe and are not expected to suit up either.

Current NBL players Luke Schenscher (216-C-82, agency: Priority Sports, college: Georgia Tech), Aaron Bruce (191-G-84) and CJ Bruton have all had connections to NBA teams in some capacity in the past and may get second chances depending on their injury status and their levels of favouritism with new Boomers coach Brett Brown. From there Brown, 48, will steer his new team through tournaments in Argentina and Brazil before contesting the Ramsay Shield (Oceania series) against New Zealand from August 23-25. The Boomers will continue on to the Stankovic Cup, a four-nation tournament in China from August 28-31.

The Iranian national team competed in last years Las Vegas Summer League and as a result their centre Hamed Haddadi (218-C-85, agency: Agency No 10) was given a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

After the NBA Summerleague...

"Brown, 48, will steer his new team through tournaments in Argentina and Brazil before contesting the Ramsay Shield (Oceania series) against New Zealand from August 23-25. The Boomers will continue on to the Stankovic Cup, a four-nation tournament in China from August 28-31."

So in all reality we wil get to see the Boomers play once in Australia this year and against New Zealand again. Our only hope would be to have a few more home games in the lead up to the World Champs next year.

Soccer though has the added advantage that the way the qualifiers are worked out you must play home and away.

We play home and away against New Zealand but the difference is we are the only teams in the pool thus only 2 games total. There are 5 teams including Australia in the Asia pool thus giving Australia 4 games at home in a relatively short amount of time.

This is an awesome thing to happen.

And whilst the likes of Bogut, Newley, Mills and even Jingles etc won't be playing, this is still a great chance for Australia's other representative [players to play on the world stage and in front of NBA scouts.

From memory, Iran played in the Summer League comp last year and their centre got picked up! Australia si far stronger than Iran (as we proved at the Olympics) and therefore some good things may happen for a few players.

I would expect to see players like Wortho and even Barlow to get scrutinised. All depends on who plays I guess...
