FIBA Americas Tourney

No knockout quarter finals in FIBA Americas.
4 game first round followed by a 4 game quarter final round. The top 4 then play off in the semi finals.

Plenty of time for Argentina to bounce back, but their team isnt super strong this year.

I have read on the Basketball Australia Web site that the Opal squad is going to be announced, does anyone know what usually happens? Does the squad get posted onto the Internet?

The top 4 team from FIBA Americas will qualify for the World Championships in Turkey next year. So in other words, the teams that make the semi-finals are guaranteed a berth.

current Group standings

Group A
1. Puerto Rico 2-0
2. Canada 1-0
3. Uruguay 1-0
4. Virgin Islands 0-1
5. Mexico 0-1

Group B
1. Brazil 2-0
2. Dominican Republic 1-1
3. Venezuela 1-1
4. Panama 0-1
5. Argentina 0-1

At this early stage, Brazil and Puerto Rico are the clear front runners, although Canada remain undefeated so far and a threat to Puerto Rico. Uruguay have recent strong results against both Argentina, Brazil and Australia (even though we just beat them). Venezuela have already beaten Argentina even though they lost to Brazil.

The top 4 of each group play in the quarter finals as follows:

1st Group A vs 4th Group B
2nd Group A vs 3rd Group B
3rd Group A vs 2nd Group B
4th Group A vs 1st Group B

So in effect, if Argentina finish in 3rd or 4th place they will likely face Puerto Rico or Canada. Finish 2nd and they could still face Uruguay! Loser of that QF match does not qualify.

However FIBA does have a wildcard system where there are 4 vacant places left for qualification. The next best teams will get invited to play-off by FIBA for those last 4 spots. There are likely to be some very tough European teams in contention too! So whilst all may not be lost for Argentina or the others if they do not directly qualify, their opposition for one of the 4 wildcard places is likely to be a lot tough that in the FIBA Americas! They should be thankful tghat USA has direct qualification thanks to their Olympics win otherwise they would have them to contend with as well!

LC - If Argentina struggle at the Americas what will it mean for them in the long term like Olympics, WC's etc? How big an impact does the Americas have?
