The write up for the Eastern v Norwood game that appeared in the 'Courier' Wednesday March 9 is as follows.

'The defending champion Mavericks men's team faced determined Norwood challenge, after the Flames clinched a grand final win in the recently completed summer season. Eastern started Saturday's game well but suffered a mini fade-out in the second quarter. It then overran the visitors in the thrid and final quarters for a 17-point victory. The mavericks started will on the back of a Brad Davis flyer, when he scored 15 points in the first quarter to carry the mavericks to a six-point lead at quarter time. Nik Campbell, Ben Trebilcock, Joel Goodenough and Adam Becis, who has returned from interstate, all enjoyed court time and provided support to Davis in the opening quarter. Norwood coach and ex National Basketball league player Rupert Sapwell tried a number of combinations, rotating nine of his 10 players available to find a winning formula. The flames established a number of scoring options in term two, with Dan Thompson, Keith Krause, Andrew Webber and Jason Januske proving a handful for the Mavericks defence, as Norwood outscored its hosts 31 points to 21. Only Goodenough, Becis and Trebilcock scored multiple baskets for Eastern. By Half-time, the Mavericks has surrendered the lead and fell four points behind at half-time. Macericks coach Richard Hill made adjustments to the Mavericks defensive pressure and his side had regained control of the match by the midway through term three. They stopped all but Thompson from scoing multiple baskets in the stanza. Of the 16 points the Flames scored during the quarter, eight were from the foul-line. In contrast Ben Madgen, Campbell and Jason Warhurst combined for 18 points between them as the Mavericks conjured a two-point lead at three-quarter time. While the margin was slender, Eastern looked to be in control. It took complete control in the last quarter with points from seven of the nine players used to torch the flames. Eastern piled on 29 points to 14, while Thompson and Webber compiled 12 of the 14 last-quarter points scored by the visitors. Trebilcock was damaging in the key with his size and strength, adding eight Mavericks points for the period. Hill was pleased with the Mavericks' defensive second-half performance, when they outscored the Flames 51-30 to triumph by 17. Eastern restricted the Flames scoring options in the second half.'

Eastern Mavericks 99 (Davis 22, Trebilcock 18, Campbell 14, Becis, Warhurst 11) d. Norwood Flames 82.

Was at the game and the only reason (or is it an excuse?)I can come up with for Norwood's shock loss, was that they underestimated the Mavericks side. It was a good hard game, Brad Davis top scoring, gee what was that being bandied around about him????

“All for equality but let's not go overboard. WNBL players are semi professional at best, that’s just what it plainly is. They don’t train as often as NBL players, do not attract nowhere near the attention (sadly) and are paid accordingly.”

Not sure how much you even understand about professional women in sport and that includes the WNBL
They train the same amount of hours as any male athlete in the same sport, do gym and weight sessions the same as any male counterpart , give up as much time as any male counterpart ..... but in addition to this they also ( most of them not all) need to subsidies their pay because bills don’t recognise gender sadly, a female will still have the same mortgage/rent as a male, same utilities bills, same health/house /car insurance , many of these women also have children to care for , and are the primary caters, unlike the men who can focus purely on their sport as they have wives to do all the mundane daily jobs, like cooking washing cleaning and running around after children

So you ignorant view on “semiprofessional at best” only proves you really know not understand what it actually takes for these women to be “professional athletes”

The federal government gave Foxtel 33 million last year to put women’s sports in a public focus to address the unequal promotions of women’s sports , what did they do, they put one game a week on, then filled other spots with reruns from years ago of men’s basketball
They have been given a further 10 million fir this season, only channel that shows the WNBA is NITV the indigenous channel, they didn’t get a penny of that money

If the sport isn’t promoted it does not get the following, if it doesn’t get the following , why would sponsors put money into it, if it doesn’t get the sponsors , how can they get a better pay rate

The inequality is palpable within all sports but especially in basketball, and much of it starts with ignorant uninformed attitudes like “women are not professionals “
