What Was The Story With These Guys?

Actually there are some people out there who do care about the 36ers and their history. They are the fans who can recall losing the 1985 Grand Final and then watching on Free to Air TV the first Title in 1986 in what must be arguably the all time best season by a team in the NBL. I think their two losses for the season totaled only 3-4 points.

A combination of memory and a bit of research shows:

Al Green - certainly starting to feel his age in 1990 as he would have been in his early 30's by then. Other guards in the team were Darryl pearce, Scott Ninnis and Mike McKay who play both in the 3 and 2 spot. They would all have taken time off Al. In 1991, Butch Hays started with the 36ers so perhaps Al's replacement in some ways.

Simon Cottrell was signed by the management, not recruited by Coach Don Shipway. Therefore he got little time and left under one season. Anyone who ever played under Don knew that he had strong opinions.

Mike Corcoran was one of the first, if not the first, of the returning Aussie college boys to play in the NBL, certainly for the 36ers anyway. I recall that he had some back issues and never really coped with the transition from college ball to the NBL. I think he came originally from NSW so perhaps that is why he went back there when he was released prior to 1993 when Phil Smyth finally came back to Adelaide.
