It does seem like a plausible and politically-correct explanation Isaac, but it also sounds like a carefully-considered cover story so ESPN can distance themselves from the story for pragmatic reasons. I guess we'll never know.
Since when do journalists have to "clearly state their intentions to write a story" anyway? Surely they aren't suggesting that no one at the party knew that the guy was from ESPN.
