Bogut not playing NBL due to insurance

It's painful irony that the season where Bogut essentially starts hitting his stride in the NBA and has his breakout season, gets an injury that will hinder his perfomance for the rest of his career.

Not only hindering his performance in the NBA, but indirectly preventing him from playing in the league.

I said this from the start. To the jerks who said I didn't know what I was on about. I give you all the finger.

Agree with everything you have said Doc, but not sure that even the insurance company(ies) would know the outcome prior to going through the process. Bogut has hardly hyped it more than saying it was a real possibility, which it was. It is us internet heroes who have really hyped it because we were so excited that it might happen.

Send him to Chit Town for Noah and Boozer. Not sure if the money fits, but I would love to see it!

I'd be suprised if the Bucks trade him as the centre position is probably the weakest position in the league and even a 50% FT shooting Bogut is a top 4 centre. Also when you have Stephen Jackson & Drew Gooden on big money multi year deals they have bigger concerns than Bogut.

Solja, you seem to have missed the point. Insurance is based on risk, and the premiums and clauses that the insurance company will underwrite are based on their assessment of the size of the risk.

Underwriting is a science to itself, but on highly simplistic terms it might go like this.

If Mills has a career ending injury, at best his payout might be (guessing) $5 million. Lets say there is a 0.5% chance of that happenning, his insurance premium might be $25,000 plus some fat for the insurance company.

Bogut is a different story. His payout could be worth $100,000,000, and his risk of injury, given his history, could be, say, 5%. The insurance company would then be wanting an insurance premium of $5,000,000, or alternatively would be seeking to exclude the exacerbation or repeat of an existing injury from the policy cover. In these circumstances insurance is no longer commercially viable and most insurance companies (even if they were to delve into this specialised area) would not touch it with a barge pole.

The NBA, as a collective, can approach an insurance conglomerate and obtain a competitive price, because the risk of injury will be spread across a whole league of players (which is reasonably predictable) which makes the task of underwriting far simpler.

The above figures are probably somewhat inflated, but you get the idea. The same basic assessment applies to the premium on your house based on your risk of flood, and explains why some houses in Brisbane are simply uninsurable.

Bogut playing in the NBL was like saying after Ansett crashed, that Solomen Lew and Fox were going to save the company and get them flying again.

From the outset, this was touted as 'a storm in a tea cup' because it has so many twists and turns. Yet Patty Mills could sign with the Tigers with minimum fuss.

One players says lets do it, the other says lets play this out like a theatrical. If Bogut had issues with getting insurance, I am sure the league could have extended its arm to help out and get insurance.

Bottom line, it would have been great for the league to get a big time star, however with Patrick Mills in the NBL for the time being, this is sure to lift crowd numbers. No loss, but a good gain nevertheless.

Previously , when there was no NBA lockout , BA just had to do a little top up on the insurance that was in place and he could play for the Boomers.

In London , I'm really not sure , now. a little confused.

I think Jerai Grant might be the only one thats happy with this outcome! I'm just glad we have a definate answer, now we can all move on.

Williams had a wrist injury and Ginobili had a hyper-extended elbow and a fractured arm.

Both will heal/ have healed to 100% providing they are monitored and receive proper treatment and rehab.

Boguts injury however, is probably something which he will never fully recover from (Even with the finest medical/strength and conditioning advice).

The guy is hindered greatly - He can't shoot too many shots per day, he has persistent swelling and says that he gets pain doing everyday activities.

People need to take a look at this situation in light of Bogut's best interests.
A lot of posters on here are huge Bogut fans, and obvious fans of the Boomers. Maybe people should be saying its good that Bogut isn't playing NBL; I think in a way it is good that his insurance never got sorted.
If the guy has such persistent problems with his arm, then the risk of injury in an NBL game is huge (All is takes is a hard foul here for things to turn pear shaped).

At the end of the day im happy he isn't playing..I would hate to see Bogut's entire NBA Career sacrificed because of a few games with the Sydney Kings. Without Bogut in the NBA, the whole Australian identity in the league is virtually gone.
All these things and im not even a Boomers supporter too!

From One Managements Twitter...

I am sorry to say that we have been unable to rectify the outstanding issues on @AndrewMBogut s insurance with FIBA

We have worked hard over the past week and are disappointed @AndrewMBogut will not be suiting up for @thesydneykings

Thanks to everyone for your patience and messages of support.

We will work now on seeing how @AndrewMBogut can still be involved with the @thesydneykings to help grow the game in Australia

That is a great way to ensure you never get insurance again - admit that you couldn't obtain insurance publically because of the severity of your pre-existing injuries. That is a great idea - not.

Just leave the guy be. He has his own professional advice about what he should or should not do. No guarantees have ever been given to anyone that this would happen.
