Aussie "NCAA Div 1 College Watch" - 2012/13 Season

And the last post for the 2012/13 thread:

This article summarises the Aussie senior class of 2013: http://pickandroll.com.au/aussie-college-class-of-2013-review-arguably-the-best-ever/

"An impressive group of 17 Australians graduated this year, many of whom have already signed their first professional contracts. However if you are looking for the standouts, it is almost impossible to go past the trio of Brock Motum (Washington State University), Ryan Broekhoff (Valparaiso University) and Matthew Dellavedova (Saint Mary’s College)"

Definitely worth a read even if I do say so myself!

I have still seen nothing to confirm Deng Deng is headed to LSU.

Meanwhile, Marley Biyendolo (VIC) who was part of the Andrew Bogut Basketball Academy has is set to hook up with Pepperdine University in the WCC.

Please post a reply if who can advise of anyone else heading to college and D1 schools in particular.

Another junior Australian representative in Felix Von Hofe is apparently set to sign on to play alongside fellow Aussies Venky Jois and Daniel Hill at Eastern Washington following the graduation of Senior Jordan Hickert.

Forward Bosko Kostur (VIC) is also set to continue the Aussie link with Bryant University, joining Claybrin McMath, Corey Maynard and Declan Soukup.

Forward Josh Oswald (VIC) has committed to Miami (OH) in the Mid American Conference.

Deng Deng is reportedly considering LSU but has not yet committed.

The PIT has been won and done, with Ryan Broekhoff’s team, K&D Roundscaping, winning the title with an undefeated record.

Ryan Broekhoff (6.3rpg – 56th)

Hoopie - Page only did his ACL in the WCC Tournament Final against the 'Zag's - he played the entire season! The only games he missed as a result of his knee were the two NCAA tournament games...

Brandt is the one who missed pretty much the entire season. The Beavers missed his scoring and rebounding badly...

Years ago

Jeez they missed him during the season. Hope he has a great comeback to make up for losing Delly's outside shooting.

LC

An update on Jordan Page: he underwent his knee reconstruction due to tearing his ACL on 10 April.

He has reported it was a success.

LC

Despite not being able to play due to injury, Angus Brandt earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition for the third consecutive year.

Brandt Earns Pac-12 All-Academic Honors For Third Straight Year

Brandt, who has a 3.14 GPA in Pre-Therapy Allied Health, earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention honors for the second straight year. He was selected to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team in 2011.

Brandt was injured in the fourth game when he suffered an isolated tear of the ACL in his right knee that required surgery and forced him to miss the remainder of the season. He was averaging 11.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game before sustaining the injury that happened against Purdue in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Sydney, Australia native will have to apply for a medical hardship from the Pac-12 office, which should be approved since he played in nine games or less during the first half of the season. He is expected to return for the 2013-14 season as a redshirt senior.

Years ago

I think Delly aside, it would be really great to get the next few quality college graduates back here, if only for a season or two... I still think coming back home, getting better chances to showcase their talents really give them a better chance of getting that next leg up, especially if they don't have the benefit of a dual citizenship to play as a local...

LC
Years ago

Delly, Motum and Broekhoff's careers at college have been nothing short of remarkable. They arguably outshine every Aussie that has embarked on the same pathway before them.

The only exception that I could think of would be Bogut who only played 2 years but won a host of awards including being the leading vote-getter on the AP All-America team, earning Player of the Year honours from the Associated Press and ESPN.com, plus the Naismith and Wooden Awards way back in 2004/05.

I would think we would be very lucky to see any of these three talented Aussies play in the NBL any time soon. Whilst the NBA / D-League route is still a possible option, I would think Europe would be the likely outcome in the short term. I would rather see then play and get minutes and a chance to develop and improve as a pro rather than sit at the end of the bench and waste.

Our next chance to see them play on home soil may yet be in a Boomer's singlet...

LC
Years ago

As for Angus Brandt, because he injured his knee so early in the season, he has been granted a medical red-shirt. Essentially this means that the 2012-13 season has been waived altogether and makes him able to return to play 1 more season (it will be he 5th year of college overall - normally a player can only play college sport for 4 years).

Years ago

So I was wondering about Angus Brandt who tore his ACL... Since he's a Sydney boy, I obviously wanted to keep an eye on him throughout the season, but two days after I started noticing him, he does his ACL (I'm not a jinx, honest!) and his season is done...

I read an article recently, when wondering what his plans are for next season, and it said that he was planning on heading back and doing what he needed to do to qualify to make the team again... Does anyone know how that works? He can graduate but still play basketball because he missed out on a season this year?

Years ago

Thanks for all your hard work during the season LC, it's much appreciated having such a good NCAA resource...

Hopefully Motum and Broekhoff get a chance to shine as hoopie says, that sort of thing can disintegrate into a dunk-fest for the "pro-active" players pretty quickly instead of giving all players a chance to shine...

Years ago

It's a really clever idea as long as it doesn't just turn into an 'every man for himself' kind of game, where selfishness and dunking rule.

There will be at least two Aussies putting their talents to the test in this year’s Portsmouth Invitational Tournament which commences on 11 April (Australian time), with Brock Motum and Ryan Broekhoff hitting the hardwood. Delly has chosen not to participate.

Brock Motum has earned all-district honours as well, being named to the All-District 20 Second Team by the NABC. This marks Motum's second-consecutive honour from the NABC after he was named to the first team last season.

Brock Motum Picks Up NABC All-District Honors

Motum finished his season leading the Pac-12 in scoring for the second-straight year with 18.7 points per game, while ranking fourth in the league in conference games only with 17.4 points per league game. He scored at least 11 points in all 32 games this season and reached double-figure scoring in 32-straight games. With 6.3 rebounds per game, Motum ranks 16th in the conference, while he's fifth in minutes played with 35.3 minutes per game. He had 5 double-doubles this season, including in two in his three final games.

In WSU's final regular season game, Motum moved into fifth on the WSU all-time career scoring list and finished his career with 1,530 points. Motum's 597 points this season ranks sixth on the single-season list. This season Motum also became just the 12th Cougar to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds in his career as he has 539 career rebounds.

Broekhoff added to his collection of honors following a senior season in which he averaged 15.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The First Team All-Horizon League honoree and Lou Henson All-American finished among the league's top-five in five different statistical categories while helping the Crusaders to the regular season and tournament titles, including pacing the circuit in free throw percentage. Delly and Ryan Broekhoff have earned further post-season recognition, both being named as one of 25 players named to the Lou Henson All-America Team, as announced by CollegeInsider.com. However it was Delly who picked up the individual recognition by being presented with the Lou Henson Award itself!

"Matthew was the heart and soul of Saint Mary's basketball," said CollegeInsider.com co-founder Angela Lento. "When the game was on the line, more often than not Dellavedova would deliver."

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years.

Delly has garnered yet another prestigious accolade, earning an All-American Mention as named by the Associated Press.

Delly is the first Saint Mary's men's basketball player to earn consecutive All-America recognition since Tom Meschery in 1960 and 1961. He also gives the Gaels' program an honorable mention AP selection in each of the last four seasons. Omar Samhan earned the honor in 2010 and Mickey McConnell was honored in 2011 (Mills never achieved the same honour).

He leaves the Saint Mary's program as the school's all-time leader in scoring, assists, 3-pointers, free throw percentage, games started and appearances.

The Lobos booked an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament after defeating UNLV on their home floor. Greenwood was influential in the win, scoring 9 points, including 3/3 on triples, to go with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Bairstow had 9 & 7 in the win. With the No. 2 strength of schedule in the country and the No. 2 RPI, it's hard to make a case against the Lobos at least being a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tourney…

Albany booked a spot in the NCAA tournament after winning the America East Tournament, becoming the first team seeded lower than third to win the title and setting a school season record for victories in the process. The Great Danes won three conference tournament games by a total of seven points and beat the top two seeds on the way to winning the title. Whilst Sam Rowley had a quiet game as a starter, it was Luke Devlin and Peter Hooley who stepped it up off the bench. Devlin had 12 points on 6/6 shooting alongside 5 rebounds, whilst Hooley had 8 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in the big win!

#4 Louisville also booked an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament with a convincing win over Syracuse in the Big East title game. Mathiang did not play as he has red-shirted this season.

Pacific too joined in on the act, securing the Big West title as it earned its ninth NCAA tournament berth, but first since 2006. Llewellyn has seen little time in coming off the bench this season.

Also in with a great chance of securing an auto-bid are the Billikens, who advanced to the A-10 title game over Butler. Ellis contributed 13 points including 4 triples in the win.
