Thoughts on VYC (Victorian Youth Championship)

"... in reality, from the 2012 season, if Diamond Valley or Melbourne played in the D League, they would of won that title quite easilly."

Taking a little away from the coaches of the teams in the D League that have won the title in the past few years here Anon. You are definitely fighting against Duncan Berg and the job he did with Dande's D-League Men last year. Winning any title from 3rd is a tough gig, and they beat the much fancied Kilsyth on the way.

@Bear yeah, agree with your observations ...

I think most clubs do the right thing and genuinely use the youth competition(s) as the next step up from their own juniors.

The main difference to juniors is that possibly a couple more of the stronger country associations will keep teams in VYC - it's really only Bendigo and Ballarat that play teams in the VJBL if they are strong enough.

The other difference with VYC is that because it is 23 and under, there is effectively a 5 year age window after under 18s ... so there will be a bit more of a mix depending if clubs look to keep their best youth players in VYC, or progress them early through to championship.

The biggest overall positive is the reunification of the youth competitions back into a genuine state wide championship - fabulous, kudos to those behind the scenes who did all the hard work to make it happen.

Will now be interesting to see what happens at the Big V senior level as SEABL works out what it is going to become over the next couple of years.

Why so anonymous, anonymous ? This isn't really controversial is it ?

The teams from both D-League and Youth League have been put together in a conference system for the first season - seems reasonable, then overall relativity between all the teams will be evident through results across the upcoming season.

As all these teams are fed from their respective junior clubs, it would seem reasonable to expect that the VJBL is a reasonable guide to who will sit where in the new VYC.

Interestingly, if you look at the "power clubs" at VJBL U18 level i.e. Knox, Melbourne, Dandenong, Bulleen, Nunawading, Diamond Valley (that's just off the top of my head), 3 of those clubs played D-League and 3 played Big V ... so I would expect they will all be pretty competitive in the new VYC.

It's all good - bring it on !
