I understand the ritual of retiring a top or number of a champion player, but I never really agreed with it, why can't we cellebrate our champions and honour them by giving a future potential champion player the same number?

Seems like retirement of a number is a sad moment and not seeing that number playing ever again is also a bit sad IMO!

Maybe retirement for 5 or 10 years tops, then reactivate the number again for a worthy player...
