More $$$ to be made in China and various Euro locations than in the WNBA according to that article.

There were 351 division 1 college basketball women's teams competing this year. Each team as 13 scholarship players. That's upwards of 4500 players.
There are 12 teams in the WNBA, and they have just 11-woman rosters. 132 positions total. Average WNBA career length is about 3 seasons. So you're only talking about 45 positions opening up each season.
Let's say that a bit over a quarter of the college athletes graduate or retire each season. That makes 1200 (+however many international players) being slimmed down to 45. What proportion of those are Australian, a very small proportion indeed.
Is it worth it basketball-wise? Could well be. You are getting regular games and training, playing against people that are closer to your own age, probably getting more minutes. You get exposed to different systems and styles of basketball.
You're also getting a free education (average private tuition costs are ~US$29k a year) whilst also being given a taste of travelling away from home. That is actually a pretty decent incentive given that the earning potential for a female pro basketball is relatively small. The max contract in the WNBA in 2012 was just 105K (US$). Minimum salary is $37k. You would pretty much have to try and play overseas or work another career in the off-season if you're on the lower end of the salary scale.

Depends on where they go in Europe I would imagine, some places pay big money for players right down to 9 &10 spots, compared to wnbl were the big money goes to the very big names and the rest would be lucky to make an average wage I would imagine but could be wrong

website says closing date for nominations 9th march.
printed forms says 16th for nominations.
