Aussie "Euro Watch" - 2014/15 Season

The last of the Aussies wound up their European campaigns as David Andersen, Brad Newley and Aleks Maric were all knocked out of their respective league’s playoffs.

Nathan Jawai and Chris Goulding played their final matches for the season as their teams bowed out of the Spanish ACB race, while Brad Newley’s Herbalife Gran Canaria advanced to the playoffs as did David Andersen’s ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne over in France.

Jawai is starting to find some form in Europe with a 21 point explosion this week. Ryan Broekhoff had 18 & 9 in a narrow loss while Andersen and Newley were injured.

Australian Boomer Brad Newley has helped guide Herbalife Gran Canaria to their first ever semifinal berth in the prestigious Eurocup competition after they accounted for Turkish side Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir 2-0 in the quarterfinal home and away series.

The Aussie men were a little quiet in Europe this past week, that is apart from big man Nathan Jawai who came up big in a huge upset victory in the Spanish ACB.

The teams of prominent Australians in Europe had a tough week. Ryan Broekhoff tried to lead his team through a rough patch in Turkey to no avail, while two other Aussies played in the Spanish knockout tournament, the Copa del Rey and were knocked out early.

Hopefully AJ Ogilvy can overcome his latest injury set back - his foot has been giving him no end of troubles and has resulted him in missing most of the season. He is a guy who given the right opportunity could do very well in Europe - he just needs to get healthy.

I reckon I would have gone with Dan Dillon at 5 myself. Jawai has really just not found any form of note this year at all - almost seems like he is in a holding pattern of mediocrity.

Newley has earned himself a decent contract extension IMO, while Broekhoff will be fielding many offers, including one from Besiktas.

Will be interesting to see if Majok Majok is retained by Helios in Slovenia.

Ranking Australia’s best players in Europe so far this season was a tough task, and it was the most difficult at the top of the chart. The top two players play in strong European leagues and as invaluable parts of their respective sides. Both players have claims on the top spot; however there can only be one atop the rankings.

This week saw the conclusion of the Eurocup group stage and the end of road for Ryan Broekhoff and Chris Goulding in the international tournament. The injured Brad Newley’s Herbalife Gran Canaria remains alive, and so does Aleks Maric’s future at Galatasaray.

And that's the thing in Europe - there is massive differences in salaries between teams, leagues and players.

Some of the bigger budget Euro teams fork out more than 14m euro's per season.

I would think that Broekhoff's next deal should be no less than 800k Euros per season but on the right team with the right budget, far more than that.

A number of other Euro teams are circling and he is currently in contract renegotiations.

Aleks Maric is set to remain with Galatasaray until at least 1 March - that includes the Turkish Cup.

Ryan Broekhoff has been in outstanding form to commence the season, Chris Goulding has been showing some promising signs, while Newley and Andersen has been rock solid and AJ Ogilvy out injured.
