SEABL 2015

WNBL franchises don't run on less than 200k

Years ago

So spending $70-80k for a SEABL team is comparable to a WNBL budget??

Years ago

President pulled the Australian imports out of local league as Tunks complained it was too rough. One out all out was the presidents decision.

Oh that's right a few weeks later Tunks pulled a guy down by the neck and kicked him.

No team culture and what history and success the men's program had has been lost because of bad board decisions or cashing the dollar instead of treating people the right way.

Years ago

There is no way Hobart could support a WNBL team financially or with the talent they have.

Years ago

So the Chargers finish the season 10-14 under their new highly paid coach where last year the team finished 9-17 with 3 coaches and 4 players gone at seasons end.

20% of the crowd left after the women's game finished and another 20% left at half time of the men's game.

Where to now for this once proud club?

Kevin White would be the only starter you would want back 100% and then see if Masunda can help bring his teammates into the game if he stays. Time for Wright and Tunks to go. Wright and Deba feuded on the court all last year seeing who could shoot first and as much as Deba cost the team wins with bad shots he got them over the line a few times, put bums on seats and interacted with the fans.

A couple of good juniors have just returned to Hobart so if they stick around with some solid imports the finals are achievable as SEABL has no real depth across the league with the exception of a couple of teams.

"Import playing 21 mins is a worry"
5 fouls might have something to do with that.

Years ago

Anyone watching first half Dandenong v Miners. Booker shootings lights out.

Years ago

Wouldn't mind seeing an elite defender like Johnson from the Pioneers win an MVP.

Years ago

The board is tanking not Rush.

The three referees didn't think the Tunks incident was reportable and the SEABL weren't going to do anything but the board suspends him for three games ensuring it isn't blatantly obvious by letting him come back for the last game.

They didn't sack him as they have looked like the biggest mess over the last 18 months possible and the fan base has voted with their feet like last week when a lot of the crowd left after the women's game.

Let's see how much love the women get next year without Scheer.

Years ago

Yes I do know what tanking means!

In this case when a club is losing money if they were to slip into the top four and finish third or fourth it would mean a road trip. That means spending money they don't have and have run out of places to borrow.

They never knew for sure when Barker was leaving and originally he was not a required player. Then to top it off Rush tried to talk him out of going to the states to instead stay with the Chargers.

Years ago

Deliberately tanking?

Years ago

Was Tunks at the stadium last night?

Years ago

Just reported on the local Tasmanian news… Shane Harris Tunks suspended 3 game by the Hobart Chargers board for the incident on Friday night. Big blow for the Chargers with a big game against Mt. Gambier coming up on friday night.

Years ago

Problem is that 5 players are getting paid decent money to perform!

The Chargers championship teams never received this sort of money!

Loyalty and hard work out the door with old teams, show me the money and no effort from most in the latest!

Years ago

The connection also comes from players that are interactive with young supporters and fans not players that think they are awesome when they have achieved nothing.
It used to be a privilege to suit up for the Chargers as it meant hard work had earned you a spot. Team culture and comradary was still great until the time Polk and Long were released and the gap between club and crowd exploded.
One thing you can't blame Rush for is last year.
Who do you blame for the last two years? The board!

Years ago

Tunks has not produced at any level and I think opposition teams actually target him as the weakest link and he probably has zero confidence.
The crowd have no connection with the men's side like they used to.
When the home side is introduced there is seriously 5-10 people in the stands clapping.
Last night wouldn't have been the worst crowd ever! The worst this season yes!
No double header with the women contributed but still over 800-1000 people.
Trying going to SEABL in most interstate stadiums where 200 spectators is a good result.

Years ago

Zac White was played out of position and was cut to save money.
Freeman was far from the worst player on the court.
SEABL is at the worst talent level across the league.

Years ago

Another 2 losses for Frankston men! What the hell is going on down there? They used to make finals every year.

Years ago

Gee, Frankstons SEABL program is in better shape since they sacked Runchey!! Jolly good times down there.

Years ago

Bennerman off to Queensland to play.

To the goose who is anonymous - if you tell Rush to his face then you don't have a problem signing up to be a member and using your real name?

I have played for Rush and it wasn’t the easiest. Plus I know the chargers very very well. I was involved in the Launceston tiger back in the day and very close friends with some of the current Hobart players as well as past player.

So lets get to the point - Rush is trying to coach like its a junior team in seniors..... right? Really that’s the point, but what is he working with – who cares where he lives. I coached in Perth and I travelled to Bunbury for training 2 hours each way, they didn’t care. So why should you? That’s right Hobart people have a complex about people in Launceston, I only lived in Tassie for 5 years and I saw that.

Ok he hasn't learnt how to talk to adults well enough, so i personally think they need the right assistant for Ben (maybe Chris Symons needs to be his assistant. Chris has the personality traits that is Ben's short fall. )

There is no doubt Ben can coach, he is great with X's and O's but there is a problem with his communication.

As for the 2 imports that aren't there anymore, why aren't they there? have any of you talked to them? or are you bashing for no other reason? that’s right you hide behind Anonymous input.

Hobart has been falling since the retirements of there senior players a few years ago, the worst thing they ever did was let Chuck and Polk go as they were strong people in there locker room for the young guys to use as support (watch how some anonymous person will bash this comment with no real knowledge).

Management and expectation on the team are 2 major issues Hobart has – good luck fixing those

Years ago

Rush has a 2 year deal!

Rush has nothing to do with the SBL and most of the Chargers players do NOT dominate SBL!

Years ago

Horton in that side makes them very interesting. Rebounds, runs the floor and shoots a nice 3 ball himself.

Years ago

It is laughable that someone suggested Stewart actually did individual training sessions.

Well let's hope Bec doesn't go back for more LARS surgery
We all know the Nick Malceski story. The Swan played 86 days after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2010.

There have been 10,000 LARS ligaments implanted in Australia since 2004, about three-quarters of which were for cruciate injuries.

Over 300 surgeons around the country perform the ligament augmentation and reconstruction system (LARS) surgery, which, with the use of a synthetic ligament, repairs the torn tissue.

If Alan Toovey, Taylor Walker and Kepler Bradley had LARS surgery - assuming their individual injuries allowed them to do so - they could have been back by about Round 18.

So why didn't they?

Dr Cameron Norsworthy performed LARS surgery on former Carlton forward Brad Fisher in 2010 and said the technology is promising but still imperfect.

"What we know for sure, and what I counselled Brad with as well, is that the LARS will always fail ... we just hope it fails further enough down the track that they have completed their career," Dr Norsworthy said.

"Anything man-made that you put inside the knee will eventually fail; it's just the environment of the knee and the stresses and demands upon it."

Dr Julian Feller says LARS surgery is attractive because of its faster rehabilitation time and the fact there is no need to take a graft from the player's patella or hamstring, causing "niggles" in that area.

But Feller said more LARS reconstructions have re-ruptured, in percentage terms, than traditional reconstructions.

"I'll always discuss it with players and encourage them if they want to get some opinions on LARS ... to do so," Dr Feller said.

"But it seems to me that most of the players I've dealt with in recent times are not that enthusiastic about it."

Dr Norsworthy said plenty of work was being done to improve the technology.

^ think they need to take a good look at their conditioning, as these injuries are costing them dearly, the players even more so. Excellent program for building and developing , but not if it's going to have so many injured players.
ACL is no minor injury and can happen to anyone, but either boomers are plagued with bad luck or something is going on with how they prepare and condition.
It's one thing to develop good players and another to keep them sound. Let's hope she makes a great recovery but it's a yr long process which is heartbreaking for all involved.

Anonymous
Years ago

Didn't she do the same a couple of years ago, hope it's not the same one, too many of those boomers injuring themselves perhaps time to look at what preventatives they are doing or what perhaps they are NOT doing.

Years ago

No link but true... Devastated

Years ago

They may as well start either Barker or Wills in the 4 spot.

Starting two 6'10 centres limits what you can do when neither is going to put up shots from 15ft and Tunks isn't showing a low post game.

Years ago

It's interesting that Sam Harriss was let go by the Chargers years ago early in the season and was putting up the same numbers as Tunk and at 1-5 will letting Tunks go solve any problems?

It's one thing to play great d but if you can't score over 60 per game you won't win many games.

Thunder import Williams is way too inconsistent and too small maybe they need to replace him with Bennerman.

Years ago

The Frankston management were given a Porsche by Runchey and the previous administration, but no one knows how to drive it! The once respected club is now being laughed at.

How was the last coach handed a ready made winning team?

Three starting guards were signed before he was appointed.

Stewart was handed veteran laden teams and never developed any juniors in his time as coach and kept bringing back 30 year olds to win now not for the future.

Rush isn't even based in Hobart so how is that the best way to build team culture?

Besides Rush's silver medal at Junior Nationals what is his adult coaching success rate and what leagues?

Years ago

Why spend near import money on Tunks?
Why recruit Bennerman who is a guard when they already have two starting guards?
Why not get a proper 3 man who can play outside and in?
What really shows is the lack of bench depth because there has been no junior development in the last ten years. Krebs,Greenwood,Inches,Masunda were always talented before entering the program.

Years ago

Bennerman ok tonight. Teenager Barker leading rebounder with 10 and Tunks with 2.
Big difference between a kid playing for free and a 6'10 paid player.
All eight players hit the court in first quarter. Maybe too many subs too early?

In a defensive minded match, the Hobart Chargers have fallen 61-64 to the Sandringham Sabres with their star import, Cam Bennerman, struggling in the season opener.

Women's previews now up on PnR.

SEABL 2015: Women’s preview

Early season predictions of the championship being between Hobart & Kilsyth from the South or Ballarat & Dandenong from the East.

Thoughts?

Years ago

BJ played but wasn't really a presence on offence or defence .
Could get lost in the mix like most SEABL seasons.
In SBL he would be touching the ball most of the time on a two man team.

Years ago

New coach has good structures in place and expects a high standard of play.
Hunt could be a legit force in the league at 6'10. This is the Chargers first pre season game and still have two weeks to iron out the kinks.

Years ago

Masunda 22
Wright 17
Hunt 14
Harris-Tunks 4
Bannerman 3

Years ago

Do you have the stats for the Hobart Chargers as well? Really only interested in the imports stats.

If they are coming from div one colleges they can train but not play, div 2 or juco as has been said are permitted to play, but not get paid. Most just train though. Some may have chosen to finish college and not return, if that's the case they can do what they like.

Years ago

Double headers happen in every league in the world. They are just a part of competitive sport. Its part of the challenge of being an athlete to be able to bounce back the next day and perform again.

Years ago

Over night sleep is enough you reckon, HO?

Years ago

Season opening for Ballarat is a tough one, home against Bendigo and then next day rock up at Geelong for another hard game.

I wonder why it is they have these double header games in quick hits, I know why they do the Tassie doubles, to save costs, but surely players need a break at this level for the duration of the season...
