The NBA's system is fantastic at choosing the most popular player, the second-best player after the player who's won too many MVPs, the player who would make the best media story if he won MVP, the player who should've won it two years ago but we gave it to that media story guy so we have to give him one this year, and the player who has performed best late in the season so it's fresh in everyone's memory.

Each coach gets 10 votes to allocate after each game, with a maximum of 5 going to one player. So 20 total available votes from each game. Unless the system has changed?

koberulz, someone's dedicated voter had apparently been voting only for players from their own team. Took almost half the season before someone noticed.

The MVP award lost credibility for me when Conklin won it playing on the worst team.

If you look at the scoring ladder you'll find him at #3. Rebounding #4. Steals #2.
Looks at the standings and you'll find his team #1 with a 21-7 record. You'll see Rotnei's with a losing record. 13-15.

Seriously though, I get that most people hate Perth and will never concede anything positive about them. But it's weird when others who claim to be less partisan can't see obvious things.
Anyway I said enough about that at the time. Can't be arsed going over it all again.

If the NBL wants their MVP award to be the "My Teammates Suck" award, then stick to the current system, or even better, go with Paul's well-considered suggestion.

The league will need to appease the other fan bases and owners so you would expect that something will need to be done about the Perth votes.

Seems nuts that the NBL didn't pick this up very early on in the piece. At the very latest, in round 3 when the Crocs beat the Cats here in Perth.

I'd rather see an American style system where respected journalists (ok, you can stop laughing now), former players, coaches, industry experts (like us, start laughing again) sit down at the end of the season and nominate say their top 5 or 10 players then total them up.

That way if a player is a standout for 75% of games they'll still have a chance of winning, instead of someone playing well for 100% of games but never really dominating.

Only if you want your list of league MVPs to be full of Brian Wethers types - guys who stand out due to having no decent teammates because their teams suck.

The system for voting can cause abnormal allocation of votes. Each team has a total of 10 votes to disperse as they see fit, meaning if they wanted to be dicks about it they could lop side the votes for their own team like 8-2, therefore giving their players a leg up in the voting.
It should be you have 5 votes to give for each team, with a minimum of 2 votes given to either team, just to ensure some level of equality.

I've got Ogilvy on 18 votes, Webster 17, DJ 16, Beal 15.

From memory, Penney has won 3-4 Fox Sports player of the games. Not sure how much that aligns with the voting system though.

Actually wouldn't mind seeing AJ win even though I'm a Breakers fan.

If Ogilvy keeps this up he would be an extremely worthy winner. Absolutelt quality centre.

But i disagree that its as clear cut as you make it out to be. Laughing at people suggesting Webster is stupid considering he is averaging 24.9ppg on 46%FG, 40% 3 and 77% FT and his team has gone something like 7-1 since his return.

Not saying Webster is anymore above Ogilvy. Just pointing out that your overexaggeration is unwarranted.
