Update on WNBL "Betting Scandal"
And David Attenborough said so.

It's biology/genetics.

unfortunately leopards dont change their spots!!

The article definitely had a more than meets the eye feel to it. Will be interesting to see what comes out

I don't bet on sports, so I don't know how easy it is to setup an account. But I do know there are hundreds (if not thousands) of online bookies.
Point is, if you did want to cheat by betting and shaving points, I can't imagine it would be too hard to hide your betting activity. (Until police seize your phone or computer with the betting app :-()
Or, you would be more likely to use a trusted friend, rather than some random employee.

The question is has there been a breach of Queensland legislation. The dollar value is irrelevent unless the case is sustained. Police will look at all aspects of the case including betting records, bank transactions and cctv footage.

"Those WNBL games have got some seriously one sided odds to them if you follow it. "
So does the NBL, especially when you factor in that on any given day, any team can beat anyone. I'll always jump on a team that has around $8 odds because generally it's about a 1 in 5 payout rate.

It sounds a lot more like that advice from inside the SEQ organization may have been passed onto outside parties.
Very much like the Indian cricket betting scandal involving Mark Waugh and Warne. Did not directly gamble but gave information that may have been useful to other parties.

Logic suggests with stories like this there is usually a lot more to it. The fact the media have now named him despite his history of threatening to activate his high priced lawyers at any bad publicity about his past actions, also says something.

That's certainly possible LV. It's just strange that the article was so specific about the amount bet and which games.

You've gotta wonder whether there's more to it and whether the journalists are treading very carefully with their reporting.
At this point it's a bit of a non story, if the information in the article is all there is.

Possibly, or possibly the investigation is a response to complaints ie trying to uncover evidence rather than responding to evidence. Hopefully the investigation is done soon so we know one way or the other.

Agree. You'd want more of a link before talking investigation and scandal. Surely it's there and they haven't been able to speak about it?

It is relevant, because the report's talking about the actions of an associate of the owner, meaning links need to established that show those actions involved others.
If there were a long string of bets it hints at something systemic, particularly if they were for strategic games, whereas a pair of random bets by an associate of the owner doesn't really fit with that.
Like I said, unless there is a smoking gun linking the actions of the person placing the bets to those who shouldn't be betting, or more to it than the report states, from the outside it seems like a long bow.

Whether its one bet or 50 bets,$1 or $500 its irreverent. There are laws in place to maintain the integrity of the sport and if you breach them the penalities are harsh. If he has done nothing wrong he has nothing to fear, if he has, his career is finished.

"So an employee of his associate put some bets on. Isn't that a long bow to draw to connect that to heal?"
Unless there is a smoking gun like an email chain it seems pretty tenuous to me. Especially if there are only two bets, as reported, one to beat the reigning champs and one to lose a game they actually won.

Spot up...
I actually put something up in regards to this about 2-4 weeks ago and it was taken down for some reason.
If he's betting on or getting someone to bet on his teams games he should be banned from the sport...PERIOD!!!

Denied allegations, followed by a challenge to ro shambo anyone who begged to differ.

Those WNBL games have got some seriously one sided odds to them if you follow it. Out laying that sort of money with the right intel could easily make you $15k. Sports agencies wouldnt be happy, not to mention the amount they had already given up to start taking enough notice imo.

So an employee of his associate put some bets on. Isn't that a long bow to draw to connect that to heal?
