This article suggests the numbers were only 11000-12000 last year.

"While crowds are growing and the number of sponsors for the league has increased, broadcast numbers are still small on pay-TV, where matches last season are understood to have averaged audiences of about 11-12,000 viewers"

The average average rating on Fox last year was around 15K at mid-season. I didn't see the end of year average, but traditionally it drops away during Australian Open and then picks up towards the end of the season and for playoffs.
I haven't seen anything this year apart from the occasional one tweeted by Media Week Aus so it's hard to compare.

It hasn't doubled at all, that's a fairy tale
last year NBL games got between 20-40k depending on the game

33k is hardly an embarrassment on foxtel considering the numbers they were getting last season it has doubled. It will take time to build the ratings do you think aleague just automatically got high ratings. There was also 40k for the Brisbane vs Cairns game last week

The ratings are an embarrassment to the NBL and hence why there is no serious corporates stepping forward and no FTA deal in the wings
LK will get tired pf spending money soon enough and then the league will capitulate

It's an archaic formula but some people have official ratings boxes in their homes, I've only ever known one family to have one and they then collect the data from all the boxes around the country to extrapolating it to get a rough estimate of how many people around the country were watching that channel at that time.
It's often been criticised as an imprecise method as for example what if only a handful of families with the ratings boxes watch basketball? What if every single one of the houses with ratings boxes love basketball?
I've always suspected the industry isn't interested in getting a more accurate picture of who is watching what because they probably wouldn't like the reality that a lot of people don't watch traditional TV anymore.
