Brisbane vs Adelaide, Nov 24
Johnson's tech for a flop was plain wrong, the rule demands a warning firstNo it doesn't.
The unsportsmanlike foul on Drmic was an overreaction by the ref, it wasn't called a clear path foul as the ref explained, however to say it was excessive contact is just silly, any other game without the refs being whistle happy this is a normal foul. There was no attempt to play the ball, that's why it was a USF. Clearly the right call.

What a return serve by the bipolar 36ers, after getting absolutely pantsed they pulled a 36 point reversal.
It was great to see Adelaide play with intent, play frantic on D and possessed in O. The firey, back-each-other-up mentality showed real character.
The Umpires
Obviously it was always possible the bad blood could produce several boilover moments, but the refs tried to oppress the narrative of the game far too much.
It is understandable to have an intent to keep the game civil, the refs went too far and ended up interfering to the extreme. Five first quarter techs was a joke.
- Johnson's tech for a flop was plain wrong, the rule demands a warning first and Johnson received clear contact that barely warrants a warning let alone a tech, the ref should have let the play go on.
- The double tech between hodgson and petrie was a disgrace of a call which even the commentators picked up the obvious bs nature of it.
Here's the events:
- Petrie and Hodgson talk a bit of trash, not happy with each other
- Hodgson walks away as the ref says to both to stop it
- Hodgson is gone from the situation, hasn't said another word
- Petrie still yells out
- Ref calls double tech
So essentially Hodgson receives a tech because Petrie couldn't shut up?
That's lazy reffing dealing with the situation double teching, and it gives Hodgson an extra foul against his name, that's an unfair punishment for someone who heeded the refs warning.
- The unsportsmanlike foul on Drmic was an overreaction by the ref, it wasn't called a clear path foul as the ref explained, however to say it was excessive contact is just silly, any other game without the refs being whistle happy this is a normal foul.
- I don't know if this is a failure of the refs or the NBL's rules in general (probably the latter) but the way Randle was being physically handled and handchecked in defence even as far as the halfway line was ridiculous, we can't have this occurring in this league. At least one foul was called for the handchecking, then the Brisbane player complained as if he was being treated badly - the defender should have been fouled out long ago.
- Refs got one back telling a yapping Brisbane player "you're being spanked by 20 so don't do anything dumb" and "i've been around longer than you" to put him in his place. That was admittedly amusing and chuckle worthy.
Randle
Backed up his own talk and wasn't going to have three bad matches in a row. Loved his game. The way he dealt with the physical handchecking defence was spectacular and he used the screens superbly. Knocking down those jumpers and some of his drive and dimes were absolutely on point.
My big criticism of him remains the over dribbling without making a move but part of that may be to do with the 36ers traditionally slow offensive movement
Teys
Some clutch three pointers, especially that massive one with a minute to go in the third quarter. He either airballs horrifically or knocks down huge threes...truly representative of the bipolar 36ers.
Shouldn't bring up the ball, he's bad at it and he loses it. Also has the ability to travel and make stupid passes.
Sobey
The turn around jumper was a tough one and a silly one to attempt, apart from that I loved this game from Sobey. He didn't score en masse, he didn't knock down jumpers and yet he still produced a massive presence. That's how we know he's becoming a consistent star/quality player for Adelaide. Two things astound me: firstly his rebounding, he pulls down some athletic rebounds which is always valuable and secondly the way he drives to the basket and manages to cooly and calmy hit the toughest layups as if there's no defence. It should look erratic but it doesn't.
Ferguson
What a standout performance by Ferg. His dunk capped off a great game for him. He didn't do anything over the top or ridiculous (apart from the dunk), he just played with confidence and smarts. It does help he knocked down his threes, but he did more. He drove more. He dished more. He defended more. This was the kind of game we were hoping to see more of earlier, the type where he uses his natural skill to make life tough for the opposition. The confidence boost and starting 5 spot worked like magic. The question will be: will this type of game be consistent for him? He might struggle some games, but if between now and the end of the season if he produces more games like this then games he struggles, we will be happy.
Drmic
Player of the match out of inspiring the entire thing? Surely.
He did what we would love to see each game - knocking down those threes, he finally got them going.
Hodgson & Jacobsen
Some huge defence, loved it. Inspiring stuff.
Criticism for both: stop dribbling like you're a guard. When you're next to the basket, use your footwork to square up don't keep dribbling where the double team will swipe it away.
Deng
He's a bit of a struggler. He loves to go for a run, obviously, however he needs to work on knocking down some closer shots before shooting far away. Like Hodgson and Jacobsen, he needs to stop dribbling, especially his attempts to go coast-to-coast. It doesn't end well. Deng, you're not a guard, don't try to be one until you can learn how to maneuver your movement around good defence in conjunction with your handles.
36ers offense
Looked better with the movement, it's the way we'd like to see the 36ers play each week. Obviously the 36ers won't knock down shots at such a high rate and the opposition won't miss shots like Brisbane did, but it certainly looked better.
A criticism remains: over dribbling above the perimeter. The 36ers love doing this but it makes life easy for the defence as they don't end up achieving anything except for losing the dribble, getting in each others way and causing turnovers. 36ers are too busy dribbling and doing handoffs without additional movement to create.
It might be easier and go to basics: use Randle or Sobey dribbling with a high screen, allow for the drive, have a cutter, big man flash or sealoff his player, high screener open himself for a jumpshot if it's Johnson etc.

Haha yeah a bit too bogan for my taste. "Sucked the air right out of the building" is awesome, even something as simple as Mike Breen's, "Throws it down" is great.
- Torrey Craig "for the prayer... yeah yeah"
- Terrance Ferguson "come on down"
I dunno, just super tacky

Excitement is exactly what you want in a commentator, it's just Russell's exclamations are cringeworthy

Footy/Rugby commentators are always prone to getting a bit excited but I would've liked to hear a Kevin Harlan type "He's sucked the air right out of the building!" call.

Added some punctuation to make the schedule line clearer.
Agree with whoever it was further up who thought the commentators were a little over the top. Best to just focus on the dunk, his age and athleticism I think.

He took off with his foot just inside the paint, from north of the block and threw it down with serious power after copping a clip. That's pretty impressive.

The dunk was great, but why was there a foul called on it? By calling those really really soft fouls (he got a fingernail on his arm), the next time a player will just hit them hard and create a dangerous situation.

I think you might've read the schedule wrong Isaac the 36ers only play one game against the Kings and then the game against Perth at home.
Thanks for the You Tube link anon!

As many predicted, the 36ers are quite unpredictable.
Not sure it will last, but as of now, they're ahead of United and level with Cairns on the ladder. Next two games are: in Sydney and then back home hosting Perth which will seriously test them.

Yea know your facts before you respond. High School guys aren't eligible to go to the NBA straight out of high school.
And reason why the dunk was overhyped is because no one in the NBL does high flying dunks like that except Ferguson, Sobey, Torrey Craig, Akil Mitchell....So any dunks with some amount of flavour will be overhyped!

Ferguson is only in the NBL because no one in the NBA offered him a contract, not even the Sixers LOL!

I liked the dunk but I still think it is being hyped up a bit much. Wasn't exactly on anyone everyone cleared out the way. Nice to see him do something anything actually, but not exactly the most ferocious thing I've ever seen in an nbl game.

Yeah, guys, that dunk was OK, but there are guys in the NBA who can dunk better than Ferguson.

Everyone lost their money last night...Lets be honest!

I agree with Tempo, presses are never ever used in the NBA and they never work.

Don't want to be a buzzkill but imo Matt Russell's reaction to the dunk really took the shine off it. Did the same to Craig's ridiculous half-court heave last season.
It would be a hard transition from footy to hoops but gee...

Tempo doesn't have time to learn anything, he's too busy sorting his NBA player cards.

Tempo, you might want to learn the NBL Series rules before you abuse something you clearly dont understand.
Each series consists of 4 games. If at the end of the season the series is tied at 2-2, points differential comes into play. Hence an example for you is last Saturday Brisbane won by 18...last night 36ers won by 18.
Therefore 36ers lead the series 2-1 and a points diff of +3.

Roflcopter, I thought you'd be admitting how great Joey is now?

Im pretty tempo is in fact Kanye West.

Did the snitches just make the bitches look like pretenders?

I've been gone for a long while, so I don't know who are what a Tempo is but I assume Kicks14 got himself a Hoops logon to soak up those salty, salty tears.
Shit.
I snitched.

Oh goodie, this is the part where Tempo tries to convince everyone that the NBA is better than the NBL despite no one ever having claimed otherwise.

I also found it hilarious the Bullets who thrive in the half court and the 36ers who thrive in a fast open game, Lemanis instructs his team to go full court press, speeding up the game and allowing Randle who is arguably the fastest in the league in the open court the platform he needs to burn any team.
LOL @lemanis, you wonder why you had an Australian team chock full of solid NBA players , not just reserves, but damn NBA starters, and you couldnt even get a medal...its because your basketball IQ is that of a house plant.

LOL @ the people here.
The NBA is the BENCHMARK of basketball including skill, tactics and IQ.
You never ever see the full court press in that league...Why? As you can see in the NBL, it results in so many fast break points, open layups, open 3s...the works.
Yet NBL coaches PERSIST with it in the hope they may get 1 turnover out of every 5 opn shots they give up.
Ask yourself, could you see Poppovich from the Spurs use this? LOL..Imagine if his team did full court press after full court press and give up all these open shots?

Tempo, thanks for your views, very entertaining. We need to keep in mind that he is allowed to be a hater at all times and login to basketball forums to discuss his business acumen and TV rating expertise! Hahahah

Tempo, I wish I had as much free time in my days to spend 2 hours of them watching something I don't enjoy. Find some more hobbies.

Only in the NBL
Full court press set after set even though it results in open laups, open 3s...but keep on doing it, i mean, you might force 1 turnover even though you give up 10 points in the process
Down by 17 in the last minute. You still think you have a chance, start intentionally fouling. Show some class, act as if you played basketball, accept the result instead of being a stat whore.

Where's the Tempo mute button?
Glad I followed my own advice above and put some coin on the Sixers, too....

I cant wait t see the ratings for this game...especially with the Adelaide test on
This game wont even have 10k viewers.

Now the STAT WHORES come out.

LOL down by 17 with 50 seconds left and they are fouling.
LOL..this league...there are no words to describe it.
The scrubs of all scrubs..
No wonder ratings are embarrassingly BAD for this league.
Give it another season and this owner of the league will bolt. You think he is going to keep on opening his pockets and keep losing money?
You think he is a charity?
Give it 1 more season and this guy will bolt

Ladbroke's Player of the Game should be Drmic for starting the whole hullabaloo that got the Snit...err Sixers motivated to hustle and play D. :)

"You're getting spanked by 20 - don't do anything dumb" LOL!

Ferguson's dunk:
And with that... @the2kferguson's @NBA draft stock is on the rise #NBL17 #yourgame #DUNKOFTHEYEAR pic.twitter.com/WiwTOHDd7i
