NBL Betting Odds

At $1.70, you collect against Adelaide this week. Adelaide will be stretched to the limit by Melbourne and the travel to face Perth...You have seen how fatique Perth was against Brisbane in their second game.

I don't have a problem with the general punter at all, in fact it sounds like fun!

The problem I have with sports betting is the pressure that is put on (mainly young athletes) to cross the line...

United are not beating the 6ERS with Adelaide having HCA. Perth are an different animal. They are now just starting to get hot and as a 6ers fan I would hate to run into them.

The other thing in Clarkes favour is that he's an ex MVP. Wouldn't be the first time he pipped the expected winner in a boilover!

In terms of this thread's odds, nothing really jumps out at me but the following I would suggest are good value:

The best value would be Clarke at $15 for MVP:

- He hasn't missed many (any?) games, unlike Ware, Goulding and Newley who is about to.

- Has been Illawarra's best player, and they're 11-10 with 5 home left, likely top 2 team or at least top 4.

Perth at $4 and Utd at $6. And the quinella. I'll back both of them to make the GF, I expect both will beat Adelaide or Ill in the semis, even without home court advantage. If they're both healthy.

Well, luckily all those bets I put on the Kings at $4, I subsequently cashed out when they were $2.70

Totally agree, Isaac. Pokies is mindless, it's a game of chance where the odds are against you. Highly addictive by nature too.

The odds are against you with sports betting too. But it's something totally different: attempting to use your reasoning to work out the outcomes of athletic contests between humans that are being played out in front of your eyes (or Screen). Pokies is gambling on which row of logos will magically appear on a screen, as you continually press a lever or button, staring at the screen and literally using less intelligence than a magpie living in the trees in your backyard.

Some good rules to follow when betting:

- Bet only on what you have some knowledge of (or think you do, anyway): For me that's primarily NBL and AFL. I avoid BBL and NBA (2 other leagues I follow) for various reasons.

- Only bet what you're willing to lose.

- Don't chase losses or get too greedy. Never think that you're a star and you'll win some more just because you made a smart/lucky bet the last time. Be content with winning a bit, or losing whatever you decided that you were willing to lose.

- Let the bets choose you, rather than choosing the bets. Don't go actively searching for a bet to put on. "Oh, I haven't put a bet on this week! Better find out..". Bad attitude. Scroll through every now and then, and only bet if something jumps out at you as ridiculously good value.

- If it's fun, and it adds to your sport watching experience then go for it. If it's no longer fun, or if you find it a bit stressful then it's time to call it over. If you find yourself thinking things like "Oh Sh!t!!! 36ers better win this one, otherwise I'm down by heaps....COME ON. BLOODY REFS WHAT IS THAT CALL!!!" then take a deep breath and resolve to stop betting for a while.

They should also stop selling hammers at Bunnings. They can be really dangerous if people hit themselves in the head with them.

$162 million is still a lot although its clear what the real cancer in society is.

For me, there is a significant difference between something like pokies (brainless) and betting on sport, especially where you feel you have some advantage (forum info about injuries, etc). But yes, for the wrong sorts of people, it can be a significant risk.

Casinos and pokies are slightly more evil, only because they promise so much. Nobody doubts that these online agencies are nothing but scum out to rob vulnerable people.
But Casinos and pokies are always promoted on the false basis of jobs, tourism, and revenue.
Crown casino runs a program for bored oldies, whereby for a token amount you get a bus sent to collect you, a nice meal with a bevy, and $20 worth of chips. Obviously most people enjoy the trip out, the nice lunch, play the $20, and go home. And the Casino loses money on every one of them. But every so often, they create an addict. Someone who will lose the $20, follow that with $20 of their own, then come back next week and lose $50, then the day after and lose $100. It is utterly despicable.

In my previous career, as an auditor and forensic accountant, I had to uncover and investigate several cases of embezzlement. The problem every time was gambling.

And here's the really sick part.
These people are not just "problem gamblers," nor do they have a sickness, disease, nor even an addiction in the strictest sense. What they have is a mental defect. Something not quite wired right. They can justify anything, because they believe they are going to win it all back.

It's like saying that mugging people is ok, because I ask nicely first, and only beat up those who are most vulnerable.

I will regularly throw a few dollars on a game as well. I enjoy the challenge of it so I'm not going to trash the concept outright.
I consider it to be slightly less evil than the pokies for example, but it still obviously has its victims and that's a shame.
I enjoy the occasional drink too but alcohol can and does do a lot of harm when used irresponsibly... there are a lot of things out there where it's a grey area between looking after people and being total fun police.

It would be fine if they just stuck to win/lose. But all the "line" betting, points spread, and novelty betting just opens the door.

I don't know what the turnover is in NBL betting, but a dodgy owner/coach could make a relatively large amount of money in the betting market, and offset a decent chunk of their budget.

Plus I think basketball lends itself to that kind of exploitation. If your team is a clear favourite, put money on to win, but by less than X. If it looks like you're going to exceed that, put the bench and DPs on in the final minutes. Most sports don't lend themselves to that kind of micro-manipulation.

There's also the unpleasant fact, that the gambling industry doesn't make a cent off the majority who just flutter a few bucks a week for a bit of fun. Specially when they'll give you $50 just to sign up. It is the problem gamblers who collectively lose billions, and in the process destroy their lives and those around them.

$20 cashes out to $41.08, I put 4 separate $20 bets on perth at the same time to potentially stagger cash outs.

yep got $80 when they were 9.50. Down to $4 and can cash out and profit decently from it

Clarke at $15? Took him a while to get rolling, but since then he's been fairly consistent and no other Hawk would have polled that strongly. Harris fell away and Ogilvy is having a bit of a down year.

Sobey and DJ have had good games, but Randle is an obvious favourite.

I got the Cats at $10 for the championship.

Should the 36ers have brought shannon in and moved Winder to his natural 2 spot instead of bringing in Howard.
