A flawless performance from long-range in his side’s crucial road win over the Wollongong Hawks has earned Cairns Taipans’ veteran Phill Jones the Player of the Week award for Round 23 of the iiNet NBL Championship.

With the Taipans desperate for the win in order to keep their finals dreams alive, Jones scored 19 points and added seven rebounds to lead from the front and help the Taipans record a critical upset victory.

Jones connected on all five of his three-point attempts on Saturday, including one with just over a minute remaining that sealed the stunning 68-67 victory over the Hawks at the WIN Entertainment Centre.

The veteran New Zealander, who just a few weeks ago was omitted from the Taipans’ travelling squad, capped a stunning return to form by making 60% of his field goal attempts (6-of-10) and both of his free-throw attempts.
Young Adelaide 36ers star Daniel Johnson was unlucky not to win the award himself after a superb performance in his team’s one-point loss to Melbourne. With 36ers big man Adam Ballinger injured early in the match, Johnson stepped up and scored a career-high 31 points as well as equalling his career-high rebounding total with 13. He also added three steals and one assist in a huge performance.

Melbourne’s Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams also came close to nabbing his third Player of the Week award for the season after averaging 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.5 steals for the round as the Tigers went 1-1.
Other players in consideration for the weekly honour included Trey Gilder (Sydney), Ira Clark (Gold Coast), Gary Wilkinson (New Zealand), Kirk Penney (New Zealand), Luke Martin (Sydney), Peter Crawford (Townsville), Will Blalock (Townsville), Mika Vukona (New Zealand), Cameron Tovey (Perth), Glen Saville (Wollongong) and Luke Schenscher (Townsville).
