Possible Australian Boomers 2020 team
Starting g lineup will be
PG-Simmons
SG-Mills
SF-Ingles
PF-Bolden
C-Baynes

Humphries SF/PF? Lol

Whether or not he is technically the starting point guard in that rotation I think you can bet your ass on him being in the starting 5, and from there basically being one of many point guards. One thing Australia has a wealth of right now is excellent passers.

In 2020 Ingles, Mills and Delly will all still be on NBA contracts in the US$10m/year vicinity, so NBA teams, at least, have have gambled that these guys will be able to contribute in a few years time.
If any of these guys come off the bench, someone must have developed (or proven themselves) to be significantly better. Experience and chemistry mean a lot, so as good as Simmons is, I'd be surprised to see Simmons take over starting PG duties in 2019.
Although the game seems to be moving away from relying on a single point guard to initiate offense. Imagine having 3 skilled passing playmakers (Delly, Ingles, Simmons) alongside a part-time PG (Mills), a defined "starting PG" becomes redundant.

What's the fascination people seem to have with Jingles playing at 2?
They call him slo mo Joe for a reason. How many international calibre 2s could he defend? I can't see him being anything other than a 3, especially three years from now.

I also have to add that the Australian team I listed above would still be a few years younger on average than the Spanish team who beat us to bronze, which suited many players in their mid 30s. I think if we get the right mix of experience and youth together we could have a special team.

Dellavedova
Mills
Simmons
Maker
Bogut/Baynes
Exum
Ingles
Broekhoff
Bolden
Motum
Bairstow
Sobey/Lisch/Goulding - some kind of combo guard or shooting guard in that mold.
Of course there are college kids like Adel, Acuil, so on whose trajectory we can't really predict yet.
It looks like a great team but there's still no guarantee that that line up would perform better than we did at Rio. There's an X Factor in a few of them but for this team to medal they need to gel at least as well as they did in Rio

My 2020 team
starters:
Exum
Simmons
Bolden
Thon Maker
Landale
bench:
Delly
mills
Ingles
Matur Maker
Acuil
Adel
Humphries

Wouldn't australia be one of the Asian spots? I thought we moved away from Oceania region?

No problem rjd. Nice to have someone talk about Asian Cup/World Cup/Olympics rather than the junior obsession going on around here.

Thanks for that anon, you are right. I read the description from here without seeing the small region allocation in the image description:
http://www.fiba.com/qualification-og
So we are really competing against NZ for a higher ranking in the WC. That's the proxy Oceania series.

watch out for a guy by the name of Josh Green although 2020 might be a bit early for him

"How many times have we finished top 7 in a WC? How confident can we really be to win one of the Olympic qualification tournaments?"
No rjd you have read the process wrong -- it's the top 7 in the WC based on this split: 1 Africa, 2 Americas, 1 Asia, 2 Europe & 1 Oceania. So you have to finish top one or two in the WC from your continent.
So all we have to do is finish above NZ in the WC and we get an auto Olympics 2020 place. Sweet.

Also smart by FIBA to use World Cup as Olympic qualification so there is no more excuse for not respecting the FIBA world championship. Nice.

Very good post rjd. I like the changes - there are too many trash teams at the Olympics. Luckily we are good now so should qualify under this format. The only dodgy thing is the coach.

I'd be focusing on the 2019 World Cup more because it is being used as qualification for the 2020 Olympics.
The 7 best teams in the WC get direct qualification to 2020, with the next 16 getting the *opportunity* to qualify via 4 Olympic qualification tournaments. Plus 2 more nations enter these tournaments from each region to make 4 tournaments with 6 teams each. Only the winner of each of the 4 tournaments qualifies for the Olympics. So now to get into the Olympics, we need to either:
- Finish top 7 in the World Cup, or
- Win one of the 4 Olympic qualification tournaments that we have been allocated to compete in.
How many times have we finished top 7 in a WC? How confident can we really be to win one of the Olympic qualification tournaments?
The depth in Europe alone will make this a big challenge. Qualifying for the Olympics is no easy feat anymore. If our best players don't play in the 2019 WC, they should forget about being an Olympian.

"Aussie, have you followed any of the up and coming Aussie youngsters. This may feasible in 2017, but you are way off for 2020."
Absolutely I have been following the up and coming Aussie youngsters.
Can you please tell me how I am way off for 2020?
Which of those 9 players I mentioned would you drop? And why?

Aussie, have you followed any of the up and coming Aussie youngsters. This may feasible in 2017, but you are way off for 2020.

That would arguably be the best lineup ever presented

"Oh I get it. It's school holidays and someone wanted to name a 2020 Boomers squad with every Aus NBA player from 2017 in it"
Ummm... No.
Firstly I have watched basketball for 25 years, so I am not a school kid, nor a school teacher.
I am looking at what the next upcoming major event is, that our best players are all likely to commit too and that's the 2020 Olympics

"Ummm there is a thing called the 2018 World Cup coming up before 2020 Olmypics. Oh and 2017 Asian Cup"
It's actually the "2019" World Cup.
I'm looking at potentially what could be the best team Australia could assemble.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of our NBA players don't commit to the 2019 World Cup, hence why I chose to comment on the 2020 Olympics.

Oh I get it. It's school holidays and someone wanted to name a 2020 Boomers squad with every Aus NBA player from 2017 in it.

Ummm there is a thing called the 2018 World Cup coming up before 2020 Olmypics. Oh and 2017 Asian Cup.

Other names to consider:
Harry Froling
Isaac Humphries
Deng Adel
Jacob Epperson
Nathan Sobey
Chris Goulding
Brock Motum
Cam Bairstow
Jack White

Rowdy. By 2020 we may see a Wilson, WMW, Naar or Landale progress enough to join the squad.

Will it be that Schenscher has resigned with them?
Hoping not, but have a bad feeling it is.
