Nz team already assembled and playing overseas, developing chemistry.

The nz squad and some of the Asian squads have already been picked and started training weeks ago.

No sign of even a camp list for Australia.

A couple of 6'2 girls that are quicker than some of the guards.
Those are the ones we should be taking for Asia in the post.

The 6'3-6'5 girls we have (and there's about 7) are all quite slow and need a lot of development.

I think you would pick at least 6 guards for Asia and work on the bigs for Worlds. The 01 guards in both Girls and Boys is very good. Lots of standouts at the completion of the week.

Anonymous
Years ago

I would choose a much quicker more mobile squad for Asia, with height not being a major factor, given our opponents.

6 quick guards, 3 quick forwards, and 3 quick mobile bigs.

worlds would be
5 guards(2pg, 1cg, 2sg), 3 forwards(2sf, 1cf), 4 bigs(1pf, 1 pf/c, 2c)

IMO those girls would make the camp, if it was 30 players.
Obviously some that didn't make it on u18 squads and also some 02s, About 5.

I missed 2 teams. and 2 quality players.
1 is at global academy.

From your list you missed the second and fourth overall scorers respectively at the championship that are both 01 or first years? I wont name them as they are under 18.

And some of those girls wouldn't make the squad if it was 30+??

Did you just randomly pick out some names???

Even the bench 6-10 players from Townsville would be superior to those top 10 performers from the u16 champs.

Anonymous
Years ago

I would put some 01 players not mentioned against any 02 player and they wouldn't have a look in!

Anonymous
Years ago

Generally those athletes that are in their respective NITP/NPP squads are measured and tested regularly so the National Coach U/16-17 would have test results plus their performances at National Champs performances to base their selection in a squad. The 01 age group is decent in both genders and apart from the 02 male PG in the Qld Nth team that won gold, they would be far superior to the other 02 born athletes.
The question is apart from the above mentioned athlete what U/16's from the recent championships would feature against the better U/18's from Townsville? I was at both championships and the U/18's was well above the U/16's.

I watched the u16 americas in which USA won, Canada 2nd, Argentina 3rd, Colombia 4th.All qualified for next years u17 World Cup.
USA look very very good. unbeatable it looks like. They booted the coach after last years historic semi final loss to us. Had a camp with 150 players before choosing the final squad.

The euro u16 teams have been announced recently and they are much taller than previous years. All positions...

We were one of the biggest and fastest teams last year, but we won't be any of those next year.

are you talking about other 02 players?

Do they measure these kids when they go to camp?

Shuttle run
Sprint
Standing jump
Wingspan/height etc
Along with all the essential basketball skills..

I think if there was a fair tryout there would be a number of girls not mentioned that would prove far too good for a lot that were mentioned.
But I don't think that's going to happen!!

It's all about the $$ unfortunately! BA roll out all of these programs but are significantly restricted with national junior squads. The U17s that recently went to the Oceania Championships didn't even have a selection camp?? At very best they would have a squad of 18-20.

This is why we lose so many kids to football and netball.

Anonymous
Years ago

You wouldn't take any of the 02 girls to camp to see how they go against 01 players?

5'6 Henderson (aggressive pg- good leader 82ft%, 35% 3pt)
13 pts, 6 rbds, 4 asts
5'6 East (consistent pg 75 ft%, 37% 3 pt)
20 pts, 5 reds, 3 asts
5'8 Riley (aggressive guard with range almost 40%3pt)
12 pts, 4 rbds, 5 asts
5'9 Melbourne (well rounded get to the rack guard)
14 pts, 8 rbds, 5 asts
6'0 Potter (quick athletic-leading scorer in tournament)
20 pts, 8 rbds
6'0 Cotton (well rounded sf 89ft%'35% 3 pt)
13 pts, 8 rbds, 3 asts
6'1 Van der Maas (shot 90ft% and almost 50% 3 pt)
12 pts, 5 rbds
6'2 Barber (mobile pf with range)
13 pts, 8 rbds
6'5 Rees (mobile - tallest player 01/02)
11pts, 11 rbds

It's about time we start bringing more people into camp to go against each other and actually test them.
like 25-30 player camps, (5-6 best players per position)
not the normal take 15, and reduce to 12...

The USA have a pool of 120-150 players every time they choose a squad.
A lot of the euro teams do the same.

OP squads look about right in the boys with the girls having more 01 or first year 18's. You can't compare the 16's with 18's.

These squads should be announced soon?

Anonymous

Yeah, green from last years metro. Would be a stretch...

Personally I'd take Tsapatolis, Jackson, Steiner but am unsure as to the other 2

Any quality centres in the ssanba?

Anonymous

Do you guys think that the soaring Aussie dollar could effect the quality of American imports looking to play in Australia? They would be earning 40% more than 5 years ago. Does it make a difference?
