World Uni Games this weekend
Ok but my comments were about how many comments there were about this tourney rather than the tournament itself/the players.

No matter how small the tournament I read every thread on here to stay in touch with basketball news. Like this one.

Australia has finished ninth at the 2017 World University Games after out-gunning Canada 98-95 in a high-scoring tournament finale.
Dejan Vasiljevic capped off the tournament with yet another game-high scoring performance, racking up 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting that included four three-pointers and 15 points in the opening term. Forward Xavier Cooks was also in outstanding form, piling on 20 points (8-of-15 FG) with 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
Emerging Boomers squeeze past Canada for ninth

In terms of size it is big but prestige wise no ome cares, plus they aren't seniors, semi-juniors... meh.

Men's team thrown together, not sure about that.
You could not pick the tall boy from Qld if you attended under 20's.
Kenyon seems to be a good defensive player but no threat in offensive, way to many minutes and that's why DJ had to put up shots.
Lady's great job.
To the people who think we shoot to many 3s, take a look at Purdue. Out of touch of 2017 day Bball.

Were they not called the uniroos, emerging opals /boomers is a stupid name really when you look at more than half the roster in both teams.

how far is Wallace off an opals spot?
She was in camp last time. 2022 maybe?
Tolo will probably go to 2020 Olympics so you would think Scherf and Bunton are the next best to replace her.

Great win by the women, all should be congratulated.
Opals, Gems, Sapphires should be reserved for worlds and Olympics.
Calling this team emerging opals is plain wrong, very few if any will play senior worlds or Olympics.

I was one of those who thought Clydesdale could possibly make the leap into the opals.
After watching uni games, she is clearly not ready.
The PG spot is a big worry.
Looking like the only option is Mitchell, Mansfield and Ebzery as third string, a CG.

No, because those players are decent.
But the constant comments about Clydesdale are suspicious. We're not dumb.

""Have to say on the basis of the Gold Medal game that you are completely incorrect in your assessment of Aimie and Vanessa. So much so, that I strongly suspect that your judgement is clouded by some family relationship.""
actually I made that comment and no absolutely no family or personal connection, it was made by looking at the initial court time at the start of tournament to what was played at the end, someone else commented during conversation they had heard she was injured so thats third hand, but from her WNBL and SEABL stats you would think she was more than capable at this level, Panousis on the other hand, hardly played all tournament, and after seeing tape from uni days I can see why.
why is it that if anyone mentions a specific player they must automatically be related to to them....if thats the case Ben Simmons, Mitch Creek and a dozen others must have one hell of a big family lol

So Dejan goes cold, 2/12 and we lose our final game, no surprise there when you rely on the three ball to win so much as Aussie do.

Australia’s Emerging Opals have dominated the opening three-quarters of play to secure a memorable Summer Universiade gold medal with an 85-78 win over a Japanese side which defeated Russia, the only team to defeat Australia in the tournament, in the semi-finals.
Townsville Fire forward Darcee Garbin was yet again unstoppable for the Australians, registering 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists in an exemplary gold medal game performance.
Golden Girls: Emerging Opals secure Universiade win over Japan
In fighting for the chance to playoff for ninth position, the Emerging Boomers have defeated Mexico 93-71 to book a final game against Canada at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei.
Marksman Dejan Vasiljevic led a balanced scoring attack with a game-high 23 points that included five three-pointers, as Australia opened up a 10 point lead after the first team, cruising to victory.
Mexico no match for Emerging Boomers

Agreed^ why?
Be interesting to see what Lucas does with Clydesdale and Panousis, he barely used either, Panousis though is way out of her depth, Clydesdale on the other hand isn't , heard she sustained an injury earlier in the week so that might explain her minutes in last couple of games, you would want to hope that's the reason otherwise it may not have been the best move for her to jump ship from Rangers to Lightening

Someone has to give Romeo a shot at an opals squad.

Will be interesting to see what Lucas can do with a stacked Adelaide lightning roster.

Well I wouldn't consider Clydesdale, Wehrung or Panousis ready either.
Wallace I still see as a sg. She got to keep working on those handles. Gets into trouble a bit too much.

After watching Mansfield against the rangers guards a few weeks ago I wouldn't even consider her for an Opal. Mitchell is getting a bit long in the tooth, Australia needs to start working on their next lot of PG s

When they add tokashiki etc, the post game for us becomes much more difficult. If we can't nullify there guard play then we will seriously struggle.
It really doesn't look good when you match Mitchell and Mansfield with yoshida, fujioka and yasuma among others.

Anywhere you can watch a replay of tonight's gold medal game?

Aust were good - just the last quarter we looked a bit spent IMO. Some precision post feeds by the Opals were pleasing to watch. Japan seemed to switch on everything then a lot a mismatches prevailed.

In the short term..

Garbin and Scherf were the standouts for Aus.
Wilson and Wallace a step behind them.
The rest have little chance of making the next step up.

Our size won't save us forever.

we were lucky Japan had an average night from the 3pt line. They played with an excellent attitude and can be proud.

27-12 last quarter

Yeah, wish we would do the same.

Japan's work rate excellent, they are great to watch

Can't wait to see Japan at the world cup next year. Will be fun to watch.

Japan having trouble with Opals high post offence

Carving us up late on.
When fujioka is the backup... we gonna have real problems at senior level when Japan's senior squad come, together.

some of those back cuts by the Japanese team are just tremendous, Australia superb with the mismatches

Got beaten by Israel by 17 as well, nothing changed that game. Team should've medaled.

Dam nice coaching on that last first half play.

With not much exp coming off the bench, the emerging opals might be run off there feet by Japan. Passing and speed might be hard to deal with.

Lithuania made the final and Australia beat team in te pool games.

So are Japan the favourites against aus since they beat Russia and we lost to them?

Alpha,
While I agree with you to a certain extent on Adnam, Naar is excellent point guard just not used effectively, Adnam took it on himself, Naar followed team instructions as I see it. Moller has played the least minutes of all but the young 5man, how can a man like Andrew Gaze talk so highly of him and he can score 20 against the Chinese national team playing for United but is not good enough for this team, a lot of the bench guys from the US college teams don't cut it or play team and don't like defence much either. They were playing three guards through the qualifying rounds and two bigs, that's bad coaching exspecially when you two meters plus three man in the squad. This squad should've achieved much better, is it coach or is he just following what he's told to do. Who knows?

The team that finished 10th boasted the likes of Hugh Greenwood, Mitch Creek, Igor Hadziomerovic, Nick Duncan, Keanu Pinder, Peter Hooley, Mangok Mathiang, Mitch McCarron, Dan Trist, Corey Maynard just to name a few.

"How does Lucas keep getting Aussie rep jobs?"
yeh coz the team is doing so crap under him this tournament right?

So we are going backwards rapidly?

They can only choose who is available to play.
We finished 10th 2 years ago, and earned silver two years earlier.

If they wanted to win, they would choose the best team possible.

On the contrary. They are! We still didn't get to the quarters.
