Idea to improve TV ratings

Years ago

Need hotter ones though.

Compared to say ten years ago it's like the clubs are intentionally trying to tone them down. Need to do the reverse.

Kings crowds are a lot of freebies. Now that the team stinks even with freebies attendance will be a joke.

Years ago

Crowds seem to be doing pretty well as it is without a need for that. You can just about pencil in Perth for 13000 every game, Melb just got 10K and did a few times too last season, Adelaide just about pencil in 6K which should rise with Childress, NZ tend to play more games at the larger Spark Arena these days than North Shore, Sydney crowds seem to be up the last few years and Cairns seem to get a regular 4-5K up there.

I think the only real concern for crowds has been Illawarra.

I personally would keep the NBL producing their own product. I think it works better.

Every game live on Fox.
Every game live on the app. (geo block the app for local games)
Local games shown live on a secondary channel to local audiences only (ABC2, ONE, 7Mate, 9Go etc).

Couldnt imagine fox audiences dropping from this set up.
App audiences wouldnt change as those wanting to watching multiple games would still need it.
Local audiences would rise, especially with good marketing.
This is a must!

Hmm so create eight accounts = full league coverage for free?

Tv games are not about the hardcore fan, that is what NBL TV is for. They need local games on tv at prime time to attract the casual viewer. For instance, a casual fan in Adelaide is not going to stop for a Sydney vs Cairns game, but may be tempted into and Adelaide game. Makes sense really, even the AFL go by this model.

Moral of the story is every network has shat on NBL, not just Foxtel.

I for one prefer watching different teams, get to see a variety. And imagine if you lived in Sydney, would you like to watch the crap being dished up there at the moment. Maybe have a fan vote for what game they want broadcast, say a week or two in advance and could see match of the round based on form, may be difficult with time zones especially Perth games, but may generate some interest especially end of season.

Brian Taylor and Dwayne Russell era was the last year on Fox. Then Ten (One) took the rights at $500,000 a year, that was good for one year with 2 games on One, 1 on Friday Night prime time, the deal was that the amount of games would increase year on year. However, the next year One was no longer a sports channel so therefore showed 3 games but at 10:30 at night (after 40 year old episodes of MASH) or as late as 1am if F1 was on at the same time, 10 then had the proposition of having 4 games to deal with so blackmailed BA by basically saying that we'd show the games in the middle of the night or we can show a game on Sunday afternoon on Ten alongside great show such as ifish and a game at 9:30 on Friday night on One and the NBL can have the rights to the other games back (this lead to NBL.tv). Which is the arrangement that existed for the next 3 years. After this the NBL under LK got a non-exclusive deal to show all the games live on Fox Sports, which is where we are today but the NBL took over the production after a year to get more NBL branding and sponsors last year.

Some of it who have been around a bit longer remember how much Foxtel has shat on the NBL over the years, it's not even funny.

The NBL at one point were getting about $1M a year for TV rights when that 5 year deal expired and no FTA channels were interested Fox Sports offered the NBL $200K for 1 year. Another season they refused to pay anything for the rights and bullied the NBL by refusing to broadcast the first 6 rounds of the season.

After I think 5 years on Ten at about $1M a season, Fox refused to pay anything for the rights and to promote their AFL footy channel insisted that the two main commentators had to be footy guys Brian Taylor & Dwyane Russell.

Now a new 5 year deal on Fox started last season not only do they not pay anything for rights but they're not even paying production costs anymore, it's pure free content for them that of course they make you pay through the nose to watch.

Subscribe to NBL TV for $5 a month, F**k Foxtel.

Foxtel ruined basketball by showing it when no one else would during the 2000s those bastards.

Anyway SBS seem to like having a national broadcast of everything and I don't think they sell ads on a state by state basis, so I doubt they'd show seperate games for each market,

Why ruined?

Foxtel is the largest problem facing Australian sports broadcasting -ruined football (pretty much all codes) and broken basketball

SBS are the only FTA station that doesn't do local programming, so wrong channel buddy.

Could work on commercial stations or ABC like in the past. But those stations love crap reality TV.
