Could Illawarra beat the 1988 Supercats?
Oi, Supercats of 1988 are a bit long in the tooth, leave them be............ :)

Since paul chose to use the 7-4 record...
For the second half of the season 36ers and Wildcats were #1 and #2 on the ladder in W-L, once Perth got over their injuries.

So? Stop cherry picking which wins count. Cats went 7-4 to end the season no matter how you spin it.

Imagine Ogilvy hit the free throw, Loughton didn't play the most inspirational game of his career to drop the Hawks by a solitary point.....
Hawks would be 3-3 after 4 road games including 2 trips to Perth.
1-5 seems a long way back but things can change quickly

Fact is an average bunch of Hawks/Taipans/Breakers/Utd/Kings were all a one game swing around from either making or not making the playoffs. An incredibly average bunch with two making it.

Then the loss yesterday was very unlucky - if Ogilvy would've dropped that last free throw then no one would've said a word!Really? Even when they had a reasonable buffer midway through the fourth I was planning a 'letting Sydney get that close is reason for concern' post (when also taking into account their absolute demolition by Perth and losing to Sydney earlier in the year).
This thread was happening regardless of Ogilvy's free-throw, all that did was give me a chance to reference my earlier Sydney thread.

Yeah still scratching my head on why everyone was hyping up Conger at the beginning of the season on here. So many scouts on here... rofl.

And yes they matched up well against the Sixers, so the combination of that plus Randle losing it completely got the Hawks into the Grand Final. They had their perfect opponent in the semi whose star lost his composure. Everything fell into place.

They were a 15-13 team. They got into the playoffs by being slightly better than the mid-tier pack of Breakers/United/Kings.
Last season Sixers and Wildcats once they got Cotton/got over injuries were the clear top two. The rest were very average - Taipans/Hawks/Breakers/United/Kings - one of those two were going to the playoffs as the best of a bad bunch.
Once you realise this it's not surprise they aren't doing anything special this season.

They aren't that good but people sometimes are too results oriented.Aren't that good, but were good enough to finish ahead of every team but one last season?
But this "people sometimes are too results oriented" on a sports forum has to take the cake. These aren't kids "having a go", this is professional, paid sport.

They're not far away from beating Sydney, possibly the least impressive feat in NBL history.

That old dude was paying homage to the beer drops at the old Snakepit and was trying to continue the tradition. Respect. The '88 Supercats no doubt got drenched.

The way their crowds are going, Illawarra can barely afford to keep evicting people like him anymore

Speaking of beers. I miss the old guy that shared his beer with Marcus Thornton.

Kings didn't win. Hawks got robbed by the Refs: Kendall grabbed leg of Johnson = 4 points, then Norton's continuation = 2 points at regular time.

Everyone remembers them making the Grand Final.
They were one loss away from not qualifying for the playoffs.
Then they draw Sixers who had Randle go off the boil completely in that Game 2 after talking trash before the game. In that Game 2 Randle was selfish beyong belief. Hawks had the perfect opponent who couldn't recover.
They were horrible in the Grand Final vs. Wildcats.
They aren't that good but people sometimes are too results oriented. There were the Sixers and Wildcats then daylight between everyone else. Shame Sixers didn't make it as they matched up well against the Cats.

The useless pricks couldn't beat a drum at the moment.

Just turning the knife on how much the 36ers truly choked last season. Hawks aren’t that good now and weren’t last season either but sport is a unique beast.

I am at a lost to explain the Hawks.
Hawks made last year's GF with Rotnei, Marvelle and Micheal Holyfield.
Clarke, Conger and Johnson is a significant upgrade from last year.
I am willing to overlook the Hawk's poor record given their schedule to date (twice in Perth).
However this is hard to overlook.
Overall the league has improved, so just because the Hawks have improved doesn't mean they are better than the rest. But the Hawks should have been able to take advantage of the big man imbalance.
Ogilvy with the near triple double. 21 points, 11 rebounds and 9 turnovers.

Conger and Johnson in for Harris and Holyfield were the only changes, and they ought to be upgrades.

I think there's a name for it... pulled a Bradbury?

If i joined a team new to district (never played before) with 6 rounds to go - do I still have to play 40% of the season - or only 40% of when i started at my club.
