Boti line about Cody Ellis
So do we think its pretty clear the Hawks won't re-sign him?
For the past two seasons he's been playing for his Dad in the SBL, and is a very good SBL level player, without being extraordinary. It seems he has made his home here with his wife and kid.
I keep hearing the rumour that he'll join the Cats as a training player???

Go read about Spenceley being ousted from his own company that he founded Vocus. He got booted last year after trying to get the CEO sacked to the board he was on. Not one to play nicely.

But it comes down to who calls the shots on the court and that should always be the coach's domain. But that's pretty clearly not the case for either NSW team right now, whether it should be or not.
Spenceley forced Carson on Gordie a few years ago, and is clearly overinvolved in rotations now:
Jase, funny how this gets started, we had a number of strategies in preseason one to start Rot, other was to get more consistent minutes and longer stints to starters. At 0-3 coaches put those in place, since then gone 4-2 so continuing, nothing 4ever things always change in ball

If you're not preapared to stand up for your 10th man it sends a message to the rest of your team you will pick and choose who you fight for. Not a good look, particularly if that player hasn't done anything to warrant it and you actually do want to play him. It's got to be one-in, all-in.
So we honestly think he'd get fired for playing a rostered player? Madness. That would absolutely be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Or you stay in a job where you're supposed to be the leader yet won't stand by your convictions for the good of the team.Easy to say when it's not our livelihood on the line. And taking a principled stand on, as others have said, a player who was getting bit-minutes and not dominating. Oh, and when results since could be suggesting reducing the rotations isn't insane.
What I don't love about all this is that in the current league and with three imports, there are decent, career basketball players who could be facing a surprise, premature exit from the league. Go back a year or two and I imagine Ellis and Garlepp would've been planning around a few solid years at least in the sport. Who knows what could happen to them next year. The line between falling out of favour permanently or finding your role (Lucas Walker, for example) is pretty thin. (Obviously their loss is someone else's gain given the fixed number of positions in the league.)

Garlepp situation does not create a good culture for the Kings

Hawks fans should chant Cody's name during the game. If for nothing else show Cody that he is still valued and respected by the fans (the ones who matter), and in the same breath becomes an 'up yours' to the ownership.

And of course it's all conjecture given we don't even know if any of the Ellis stuff is even true.

Or you stay in a job where you're supposed to be the leader yet won't stand by your convictions for the good of the team. Not setting a good example. In essence he's not the coach now, given he doesn't have any say over who he plays. As I said, very weak - particularly in the leadership side of things.

There wouldn't even be that many. Henare, Wright, and Gleeson would be safe. Gaze probably is as well, even if he shouldn't be. Fearne's got the Cairns job as long as he wants it although reports have him looking elsewhere for next year. I doubt Brisbane would get rid of the national coach.
So it comes down to whether JVG can be talked out of the Gaze experiment, whether Fearne wants to go elsewhere, and how long Vickerman is signed for. And in the Sydney case Bevo would be going from the frying pan to the fire.

Exactly Bevo's in the second year (I think) of a 4 year contract he'd be crazy to walk away from that over Cody Ellis.
It's not like the owner is demanding he not play Rotnei Clarke or something. You're not going to die in a ditch over him walk away from that financial security along with having a settled family in the hope of getting another gig somwhere else keeping in mind there would only be 6 other options for him too.

If Ellis is being held out against the wishes of the coach, then the coach is pretty weak. Grow a pair and play who you want to play. And then you get fired, they sign someone who will toe the line, and everything goes back to how it was except you're out of a job.

What did Ellis do?Not aware of anything, and doesn't strike me as the sort to have caused trouble.

"In the modern era, I wonder if some new age lawyer could run a work place bullying suit against the Hawks owners. Would hardly be comfortable to have them sitting on the bench next to you during a game."
Having just been forced to sit through a mandatory hour-long training session on this topic, it's a good point actually. It's an interesting situation in a professional sporting team... Trying to think of other examples, but the only one that comes to mind is that Miami Dolphins lineman a few years back.

If Ellis is being held out against the wishes of the coach, then the coach is pretty weak. Grow a pair and play who you want to play.

Garlepp isn't 11th man thoughWhich players are playing significantly fewer minutes than Garlepp is?
they are/were deliberately trying to use this as leverage to get him to leave without paying out his contract.Which differs from the Ellis situation how?

Because Cody's being held off the court by management contrary to the wishes of the head coach?
There's similar outrage on Garlepp's behalf in Sydney.

Why the sympathy for Cody but not for every other teams 11th man?
