40 NBL Seasons - Defunct League
Jack, it seems there are plenty of teams that would stand up as a competitive league, probably many more than the 8 we currently have at NBL level. If we are looking at a sub'NBL league, we could have 30 teams!

Canberra Cannons
Gold Coast Blaze
Hobart Devils
Newcastle Falcons
South-East Melbourne Magic
Townsville Suns
West Adelaide Bearcats
West Sydney Razorbacks

Hunter Pirates were always competitive. Didn't always do well. Singapore Slingers were average also but they do trial themselves against NBL teams, I know that for sure.

1979. Glenelg Tigers (the club that became NCT, now Southern apparently). Included names such as Gerry Clarke, Steve Sparrow and Rick Hodges.
Forestville Eagles totally different club. eagles couldn’t afford to go it alone either, so a consortium of clubs and BASA formed Adelaide 36ers. I think they were Adelaide Eagles before Adelaide 36ers though.
The West Adelaide Bearcats could no longer afford to go it alone, and merged with 36ers.
Surely someone else knows more details than me. I don’t even live in Adelaide anymore.

The West Torrens Eagles competed in 1980, the Forrestville Eagles in 1981, and the Adelaide City Eagles in 1982, and the Adelaide 36ers in 1983. The 36ers and Bearcats merged in 1985.

I seem to recall Forestville Eagles - not sure how many seasons.

I don't quite understand what you mean by competitive, do you mean in terms of market and getting people supporting them or junior programs or just ones that will make us happy as a pig in shit to see return?
South East Melbourne Magic
North Melbourne Giants
Geelong Supercats
Newcastle Falcons
Canberra Cannons
Townsville Suns
Hobart Tassie Devils
West Sydney Razorbacks
I think they could all lay claim to wanting to return to the league but once (or more) bitten, twice shy.
Intrigued by Launceston Tigers as well (I think that is what they were called)

Surely the tigers get a run for the butchering they copped when Kestelman rebranded

1. Canberra Cannons
2. Sydney Supersonics
3. Hobart Devils
4. West Adelaide Bearcats
5. South Dragons
6. Singapore Slingers
7. Townsville Crocs
8. Gold Coast Cougars

The Adelaide City Eagles (formerly Forestville Eagles) and West Adelaide Bearcats were both in the league at the same time, and merged to form the 36ers.

Udog, that's a hard one....I think you could almost include them as there were multiple Adelaide teams, and if you read the official log, they merged with West Torrens to form the Adelaide City Eagles, not the Adelaide City Bearcats.
I think they could almost stand on their own.

West Adelaide Bearcats who became the 36ers count? They won a championship before becoming the 6ers.

"To me, this has blowout written all over it. Adelaide gets their revenge with an easy win.
Matt’s Prediction: 36ers by 18"
