Tassie targeted by AFL clubs

Hang on. Did they play 1 on 1 or was it just a 3 point shootout.

Seriously disappointing standard of journalism, misleading the public.

Years ago

Anthony Stewart's son made 9/12 from the 3 point line. Will not as many.

Years ago

Tassie will never have an AFL team.

Years ago

What about the real news?

By how many points did the 12 year old beat the Premier?

Will the Premier be able to campaign with 2 broken ankles?

Good luck to the Tasmanians. Hand painted frog ties, neatest wood stacks in the world, now possibly an NBL team again. NBL would benefit from getting in before Tassie gets its own AFL team, not just rent a teams from Vic.

Years ago

D.002 you clearly didnt learn your lesson last time you put your foot firmly / easily in you mouth did you.

Years ago

I don't get why netball gets the same as basketball (the $250K annual part).

Anonymous
Years ago

So, they're not getting an NBL team?

Even in Taswegia, $10M will barely get you a shed. Certainly nothing remotely suitable for NBL.

Years ago

Why is TAS all of sudden thriving?

Years ago

Tasmanian government spend money on fly in fly out afl teams, could be better served chipping in for there own permanent basketball team..

Anonymous
Years ago

I highly doubt it, there is very little money in Tassie, period.
Their economy is a basketcase, and if the government was a company it would be done for insolvent trading.

Now in the grand scheme if things, you wouldn't need to be stupendously rich to fund an NBL team. I'm sure there's a fair few Taswegians who could. But how many are crazy enough to blow a large chunk of their Net worth on such a venture?

And keep in mind that there's no real prospect of it ever being self-sustaining. So you need somebody with a long-term commitment to burning money.

Years ago

That's what I said. You said it differently. The money available for a Tassie team is already there. Maybe even the Government would assist as well.

Years ago

You're missing the point.
"LK has already stated that if the ownership model is right then everything else that the Chargers are doing is more than acceptable for and NBL entry."
So allow me to translate:
"Running an NBL team takes very deep pockets, everything else is secondary. So if you can find owners prepared to burn at least $20M (over say 5~10 years) then you can have your own NBL team wherever you want.

At one stage Crocs were incredibly successful things just got pooped up

Years ago

I recall a falling out with pricing etc with the TTEC? Or what ever acronym they used was?
But pathetic crowds at the RSL venue.
Realistically they were always there abouts and never won a chip, like so many other regional teams.
If the the NBL wants to be a BIG capital city comp the regional teams will never compete. Equally the big City comp is doomed.
No effective salary crap. Oops cap. No enforcement of the over the (no)cap rules is a joke.

With the current rumour of the Hawks folding next year it's only a matter of time before the Taipans are gone.
3 teams in Melbourne? 2 teams in Perth? Nah. Trying to crack the Chinese market will never happen.
Larrys done a great job undoubtedly but he's a flipper and a flopper. He;s wasting his (the NBL's money) on the Bullets. TV deal looming and for 2 seasons in a row (his) Bullets are crap. Crowds are shit and their team is crap x 2 seasons.
The potential is great for the NBL but please Larry try and calm down a bit about your spitball ideas.

The Crocs weren’t forced to go to RSL, they chose to because it was cheaper. Their crowds dropped dramatically & while they returned to the swamp (co-owned by the casino & the council), they never recovered.

Years ago

What happened to the Entertinament Centre owners? Busto?

Years ago

Yes The Furnace was a mirror image of the DEC in Hobart with a few additions. It seems that for some reason once the stadium expanded the crowds over a period of time declined then declined dramatically.
The move to the RSL was the beginning of the end.

Years ago

"Australian record for attendances; the Suns sold out their first 69 games at the "Furnace" (capacity 4,141), a streak that was only broken after the venue was expanded for the 1998 season."

RIP Suns/Crocs

Years ago

Sad about the crocs because it's not that long ago they were considered the model franchise of the league that all others looked to for how to do things right. I don't know what went wrong up there but the public seemed to almost turn on them and recovering from that is really hard and probably expensive too.

The schedule is just an excuse.

When the Crocs returned to the Ent Centre, they could barely get over 1500 on any night. This franchise was basically dead even before they were forced to move to the RSL Stadium, and confirmed dead when they moved back to the Ent Centre in their last season.

Townsville simply gave up on them and LK was in no mood to prop up a small club whose town didn't give a shit about anymore.

Years ago

Kobefool, That's just rubbish. Crocs had to shift stadium due to new ownership doing it up. Kestlerort then stitched them up with all Wednesday,Thursday & Sunday games that nobody want's to got to.

Years ago
Why is LK keen on Hobart but let Townsville die and not interested in the Crocs coming back?
Because the Crocs were getting 200 people to games on a good night.
Years ago

Realistically a 'cheaper' second tier wouldn't be a bad idea so new clubs didn't have to automatically go hammer n tong.

NO rumours there.

lots of interesting rumours flying around
