WA SBL - March 2018
^c'mon mate, this is March's thread. See June's here http://www.hoops.com.au/forum/43422-wa-sbl-june-2018/

Saw last night random has skin cancer ftom a melanoma. Mate from all of us in joobdalup, get well soon aye. Your flames crew and the basketball public of our state are better with you involved.

^hahaha no, it's Holmen

He reportedly recovered months ago, it's just when Hobart wanted to sign him, he was injured at the time

a certain former league MVP is on his way back to WA

Any ideas who the Hawks facebook post today is referring to? https://www.facebook.com/perrylakeshawks/posts/1792983984092256
Can only assume it's Monroe's replacement

Thanks very much, now it makes some sense!!

At the risk of sounding silly, can someone (Random perhaps) explain how the +/- on the SBL boxscores are calculated please? Thanks.

The wolves just played with more intensity... Ran all 10 players at them all game. It was neck and neck for the first half. I think the Redbacks just ran out of steam towards the end.

Wolves took advantage of the lack of Vigor and Roberts. Wolves at least 10 deep this year, ran the redbacks out of steam. Don't know if it will work later in the season but the wolves showing good signs.

keep in mind Loughton didn't play, and Roberts and Vigor are yet to arrive

Is there a list of the top 10 (ish) in games played for each club anywhere?
Lukosious? Or anyone?

Games over the next few weeks I believe will sort out the contenders from the pretenders this year...
Week 4
Wolves @ Stirling
Buccs @ Willo
Week 5
Wolves @ Gero
Week 6
Senators @ Perry Lakes
Week 7
Redbacks @ Willetton

Redbacks will still be very good this year but I doubt they are a lock to go back to back. Redhage last year was 36 but coming off an NBL season and still fit and strong. While he will still be good and a handy SBL player... he could drop off significantly as he hasn't been with an NBL team all SBL off season. And now he's 37 and pent the off season travelling to commentate NBL.

Beat down for the Magic too. Julitz scores 17 last week and comes off the bench?
Slammers won’t have a chance to win another til they play Magic again. Adding a Voelkel will help but he can’t beat teams by himself.

POWER rankings after round 2....
1st - Redbacks (last week: 1st)
Seen nothing yet that would tell us they shouldn't be no.1
2nd - Senators (last week: 4th)
I had them 8th in the preseason and I'm now eating my words.
3rd - Wolves (last week: 2nd)
Clausen struggling despite the hype. Luckily Seb stuck around.
4th - Hawks (last week: 3rd)
Lost an import but we assume a replacement is lined up.
5th - Buccs (last week: 5th)
Will move into the top-4 when Ross arrives.
6th - Lightning (last week: 7th)
Batting above their weight at the moment with one import.
7th - Tigers (last week: 6th)
One starter short of being a top-4 team at the moment.
8th - Eastern Suns (last week: 8th)
A couple of thumpings brought them back to earth.
9th - Cougars (last week: 12th)
Tonight we will see if they are a top-8 team.
10th - Flames (last week: 9th)
When's the help arriving (Hire, Washington)?
11th - Eagles (last week: 11th)
I'll repeat from I said a week ago - Morse looks pretty good. not much support though.
12th - Giants (last week: 10th)
Is this the worst team if you take away the imports?
13th - Magic (last week: 13th)
Won the battle of the cellar dwellers last week.
14th - Slammers (last week: 14th)
Should be better than this.

everything BWA-related would be at BBC if they could, but BBC obviously has multiple tenants and outside clients. Warwick is no where near as user friendly for BWA - there's no way they *want* to use Warwick

Yeah I respect that he has stepped up to hold down the fort, fair call. I will respect him more for putting his ego aside and standing down.
Did they have no other applicants? Hard to believe that one

Saw a bit of the Lakeside of old against Perry Lakes.. up tempo lots of threes and full court defense. And Prue rebounding

Re: Catalano.. I told you so!
An opposition 7-0 run to start the 3rd qtr and 20-9 run to start the 4th is a sure sign of bad or ineffective instruction being given in the huddle.
How does a coach at this level have no idea how to bust a 2-3 zone?
They need to start looking at who isn’t coaching right now and may be available to get them in there as a replacement whilst the damage can be limited. Quick affirmative action will see them still make the playoffs, they have the talent to do it. If they wait til even 0-5 it may be too late.

Stats worked ok every other year BBut can't get them now

Talk of increased depth for the kalgoorlie boys seems off the mark, currently running a 7 man rotation with some brutal +/- numbers

the giants hierarchy will be seething about there start particularly the game on Saturday night.
cougars tipped to finish outside the top 8.
first home game in front of a big crowd you would have thought they would have taken the "W"
will need to bounce back in the next 2 weeks or it will be another long season.

I found that you need to rotate the screen and click desktop site to access the links but the actual stats work fine on android

carl catalano sat on his hands at a very important part of the game Saturday night.
Mandurah made a big run and had all the momentum in the 3rd and catalano left a struggling 5 on the floor with no time-out or change up in offence or defence.
Mandurah sat in a 2-3 zone all game.
how many games as catalano coached ? does anybody know the coaching records of the current coaches going around

Nothing happened with Carlwell. Its the usual PR process.

Catalano out coached last night, water is wet. Even Slammers fans giving him a hard time from the stands.

Not buying Hawks as a legit contender this year. Good talent but not enough top shelf scoring power. Need a stud import/adekponya type scorer to complement their great depth

Can't get live game Tried ph Tablet and Computer Get scores bur can't get game

No stats Can't get last weeks just 0

Couldn't get live stats last night and still can't get results up?

meanwhile, Kevin Davis in a similar boat at Kalamunda.

How's Morse with 38 of EP's 74 points tonight. Next best... Ngor Manyang with 7 hahahaha Eagles really are a garbage club, with the women just as bad. Why is Corey Easley still playing? Couldn't hit water from a boat. Easley and Williamson have both got to go - both have been washed up since 2014

Too busy on here making dumb circular references no one else understands/partying in Kuta/drinking in Subi pubs after the preseason tourney.

Ha ha love the burns on the tiger boys. Bit of feeling in that one.
I don't think Belger is back yet R@ndom

Week Two Men's Preview
Eagles @ Perry Lakes
Eagles with a nice win on the road over the Cougars on Opening Night before just having a massive second half comeback fall short against the Buccs at home on Sunday, but this presents a much tough task for them up against a team I think will challenge for the title this year in the Hawks. Parso's boys easily accounting for the Magic at Headquarters last weekend and I see this going much the same way. HAWKS RELATIVELY EASILY BY 16
Suns @ Perth
VERY interesting game this one. It was only one game but alot of positives coming out of Kalamunda's 20+ point win at home over the Slammers in Week One, and they will head to take on the defending champs with a 'nothing to lose' mentality. For Perth, they have advertised as this will be Loughton's last game and given the form he was in last weekend, along with the strong return of Redhage, the Spiders could send Alex off on a winning note if they hold their form and contain Davis & Belger. LIKELY TO BE CLOSER THAN SOME MAY THINK, BUT I STILL SEE PERTH TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS, WINNING BY 9
Cougars @ Goldfields
Horror opening road trip for Rubes and the Giants, losing a close one to the Flames last Saturday night before being absolutely embarrassed against the Senators the following day. Sharpe is a very handy player and if he can stay out of foul trouble (9 fouls in two games last weekend!) then the Giants will definitely be a chance in this one. Cockburn make the annual trip east after also losing in Week 1, going down at home to East Perth despite strong games from 'Bob' and Seva. I SEE SHARPE AND FIELD CANCELLING EACH OTHER OUT OFFENSIVELY HERE, SO IT WILL BE UP TO THE LESSER LIKES FROM BOTH TEAMS TO CONTRIBUTE ENOUGH TO GET THEIR RESPECTIVE TEAMS A WIN HERE. FIRST HOME GAME OF THE YEAR IN THE 'GOORLIE ALWAYS MEANS A BIG CROWD, AND WITH THAT HOME TOWN SUPPORT I WILL PICK THE GIANTS IN AN UPSET BY 2 (I KNOW I PICKED THE COUGARS ON THE RADIO SHOW... A MAN CAN CHANGE HIS MIND HAHA)
Flames @ Geraldton
Rockingham head to the Midwest after splitting their Week 1 double header, whilst the Buccs have their first Home Game of the year in front of the Midwest Maniacs after also splitting their Week 1 double header. If Ross plays, especially given the current injury clouds over DKD & Hire, then the Buccs should have enough firepower to get the Win - But the Flames are getting closer each year to breaking their Geraldton Hoodoo! HEART SAYS FLAMES BY 2, HEAD SAYS BUCCS BY 5... WE'LL GO WITH THE HEAD ON THIS ONE BUT OBVIOUSLY HAPPY IF I'M WRONG HAHA
Magic @ South West
Well, tough start to the year for both teams but at least with Trahair's troops - it was half expected given their redevelopment phase they are going through down there with alot of young kids getting opportunities this season. The same can't be said for the Slammers however who have on paper, a very decent team that were made to look very ordinary up at the Shed in the Sticks last weekend. For Coach Catalano's sake, I hope it was just a blemish on the radar and they start to find their mojo rather quickly! ALWAYS A BIT OF FEELING IN THE SOUTHERN DERBY AND EXPECT THIS TO BE NO DIFFERENT. SLAMMERS WERE HORRIBLE LAST WEEKEND BUT THEIR ROSTER IS TOO GOOD TO NOT BOUNCE BACK IN THIS ONE. SLAMMERS IN WHAT COULD BE A VERY UGLY GAME BY 11 POINTS
Hawks @ Lakeside
So we have our first service at The Church for 2018, as the Lightning get set to host a Hawks side coming off a Friday night clash with East Perth at Headquarters. Lakeside weren't disgraced against the Redbacks on Opening Night, and will go into this clash in the familiar surrounds in South Lake pretty confident of pulling off the upset of sorts. Perry Lakes backing up will be their first major test of the season, and locking down the God Squad's scoring backcourt of Bragg and McKenzie will be high on Coach Parson's priority list. DEFINITE DANGER GAME FOR PERRY LAKES, BUT THEIR DEPTH IS A MAJOR REASON I HAVE THEM GOING SO FAR THIS SEASON - HAWKS TO GET UP IN A CLOSE ONE, DEFEATING THE LIGHTNING BY 5
Wolves @ Kalamunda
Can the Suns pull off their second upset in as many weeks as the Wolpack head up to the Hills to take on a somewhat resurrgent Suns lineup. The big question for this game is will the Suns 'no-names' step up to contain the star studded Wolves lineup with names like Salinas, Iliadis, Huntington & Billups all capable of winning a game off of their own hands. EXPECT THIS TO BE A DEFENSIVE FOCUSED GAME FROM THE WOLVES, WITH AGGRESSIVE TRAP DEFENSE AND PHYSICAL MAN ON MAN BEING THE LIKELY RECIPE FOR ETTRIDGE & CO. WOLVES TO MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW, DEFEATING THE SUNS BY 7
Tigers @ Stirling **Game Of The Week**
Dear Tigers players who love to post on forums such as this one during pre-season on how well you are going to do, and where you will be heading for post-game / success celebrations... It actually helps Blacky if you show up for games, particularly the bench players. 11 points total against the Wolves last week from your bench, and 8 of those were from young gun Luke Jackson, makes me wonder if you spend too much time on here or working on your spray tans / mole hair removal and not enough time on your jumpshot, or heaven forbid defense - seeing you did lose last week... remember that? Otherwise it will be a loss to a Stirling coach who loves to beat anyone with the surname Black and suddenly you are 0-2, likely sitting outside the Top 8 heading into Week 3... happy, happy, joy, joy! SENATORS TO TAME THE TOOTHLESS TIGERS, WINNING BY 8

Just joking about JG I actually love the bloke.

Keep doing what your doing Random.
You're giving out free content, if the this bloke doesn't like specific things he doesn't have to listen.
Or he could create his own show which we could critique.
You are an asset to the SBL, keep it up!

Great Job Trav,
First episode you can understand him interviewing Rocko coaches who are easier to access on game day at his home club. I'm sure more teams will be interviewed during the season.
Remember Trav is a volunteer spending his time to provide something of value to the league. Lets not burn people for trying to help the sport regardless of the content/opinion.
People like to rag on Carl Catalano but there was no applicants for the Bunbury role going into January and this guy has stepped up to save the club some face in not having a coach for pre-season. He is up against it this year with a roster he has yet to develop.

get Joshy Garlepp on the show to talk about the horks

Also listened to it, nice show first up.
Two pieces of advice, don’t breath so heavy through your nose mate. You can hear that wind tunnel during the Lako interview. Unless of course that was the hot air escaping lako’s head. After the 45 minute banner raising ceremony I was surprised there was enough time for him to do an interview.
Secondly, it’s Saturday, not “satday”, Probably a jerk comment by me, but when radio is about verbal communication it’s probably worth including all the letters in the word.

Just listened to SBL radio. congrats to random on his first show! sure you were nervous but good interviews, and even a bit if opinion which was great to see. not sure about first two post game interviews being from your home club's coaches but we can work on that. nice effort mate

^^ ahh loked him up, Reynolds went to Texas A&M Corpus Christie which is not quiet the same as the main Texas A&M Aggies in College Station I was thinking, still in div 1 so should be good with that record and experience

How many "good" coaches applied for the Bunbury job? Is there work down there for a coach? Nix traveled and didn't live in Bunbury.

I see the Catalano effect has taken hold on the previously playoff level Slammers. Te wooden spoon is between them and the Magic no doubt. Looking like they both struggle to win more than 2-3 games all year long.
Can’t understand the logic behind the Slammers going with that coach. He wins what? 1 game in 2 seasons, then they get Harrelson and go all the way to the sbl grand final in the midst of several good playoff seasons. Last year they get a good coach and make playoffs. Now back to the dump.. crazy logic!
