WA SBL - July 2018
Absolutely nothing stops coaches doing that. In fact a lot of the coaches palm this off to their assistants.. who feel less responsibility to vote responsibly.

Awards night

That's why Hawks NBL owner basically told Bevo to bench him, he was sick of crap like that.
So what are the QF matchups?

In a similar vein hows the Giants losing at home to a Lightning team with no imports.

If Senators had just paid their young core from back in the day a little bit (they weren't asking for much) they would be in an extremely healthy position. Pure mismanagement.

Wow that degenerate really quickly. Some disgruntled people out there.

So let me get this straight - they refused to pay senior SBL players (who left for Wolves) yet pay juniors? hahahahaha what a joke

Dumpster fire that pays kids from other clubs to come across to their club just to qualify for u14 nationals. Absolute joke and the fact basketball wa has done nothing about it is even worse. Mr nipps and the stirling board should hang their head in shame

Stirling is just a dumpster fire all round. They were the top association pre-SBL, but have since won just one title (a women's championship) in the 90s.

the Senators made Carlwell look good last night. Ellis and Davis are not spot up 3-pointer shooters, yet that was their game plan. Ellis surely wont be back in the NBL again

Stirling men were anaemic last night. They need a style of play that fits their personnel and right now they are playing a style which suits slow and big lineups. Play small ball when u got a small ball lineup quite simply.

How about Travis Durnin last night? 45 points and 18 rebounds.. great young player there!!

Cody Ellis has been poor this season. Terrible night for the Senators - final scoreline was flattering. 12 in a row to finish the season for the Hawks. Hot favs for finals

Trust me I would but I don't follow SBL enough week by week to be able to writeup a preview of the men's side.

All the garbage that fills the SBL threads, and some rare constructive basketball-related discussion gets dismissed as trolling?

No, actually, I don't. I know it's just a preview but I'm surprised at them. Not knocking the effort but it is surprising.

I'm blown away how neglected the men's SBL is in this thread with all these in depth analyses of the women's league only!

anyone else think the SBL is pretty neglected? For example, the past champions list on the website hasn't been properly updated since 2013, same with the awards history page

jess jakens been whooping ass for years, where you been?
we are talking about the most improved , because under the guidance of Charles nix she is back to playing to her ability.
jess has been In la la la land for the past 2 seasons - probably with you my friend

WSBL
combo I agree with your MVP - prediction with schagmeyer however both fipps and grant will take votes from her.- look at last weekend with ash grant, also fipps has had a lot of 20+ games.
they have won enough games for schags to get over the line.
brown is the obvious danger with no-one stealing votes from her except maybe palusna over the last 4-6 rounds , I don't think the magic have won enough games however ? Standish will be in calculations as well.
1. schagmeyer
2. Standish
3. brown
roughie- jennie rintala
combo I agree with all but one of your all-star 5 selections - rintala in for Keisha lee.
Mansfield definite coach of the year with only the 1-loss.
1. Mansfield
2. Knowles
3. nix.
im not sure how the other awards work with rookie of the year and most improved and what the guide lines are but these 4 girls need to be in conversation
jewel Williams
izzy miotti
jess jakens.
Carla drennan

“Just wish we could spread the top level/NBL fringe talent to the Mandurah's of the league.
They really struggling atm.
Couple 50pt loses and letting someone go for 60pts in last 2 weeks.
They need help.“
Nah.. that’s because of the fixturing LOL

agree with most combo, but your rookies of the year only played 13 and 9 games so cant agree there , plus Clarke played a number of games in sbl 2 seasons ago

WSBL Award Winners - Projections 2018
MVP: Ali Swaggmeyer Lakeside Lightning - 22.8ppg 7.6rpg 4.5 apg
The league MVP will go back to back in 2018. Swags leads the 21-1 Lightning to its best ever regular season scoring over 20 in 16 of 22 games. Noting the win total and the fact that she would place top 3 in nearly every vote, the trophy is hers.
Runner up: Anita Brown Mandurah Magic - 24ppg 6.7rpg. Had a monster 2nd half of the season averaging 28ppg is it enough?
COTY: Craig Mansfield Lakeside Lightning. 22-1 record, beating every team twice except a 6 point loss to Redbacks. 1st in scoring at 90ppg.
Runner Up: Tom Knowles: 13-8 7 game win improvement in 2018.
Most Improved: Tayah Burrows Southwest Slammers - 12ppg 4rpg.
Moving into the starting role post u18 nationals Tayah has seen her averages near triple from 4.8ppg to 12 in 2018. Scoring in double figure in 10 games.
Runner Up: Eryn Fisher East Perth Eagles - 12.1 ppg 7.5rpg. The powerhouse forward logged a lot of minutes in 2018 doubling her scoring and rebounding totals.
ROTY: Emma Clarke Perry Lakes - 9.5ppg 5 rebs. The former AIS graduate returned to her home club this season and quickly showed her value as a mobile forward. Now off to college in 2019.
Runner Up: Tayla Hepburn Willetton Tigers - 9.6ppg 3 rebs in 8 games. Hepburn returned home from college to be picked up by the tigers to bolster their big stocks. Hasn't finished the season but will be a solid SBL starter for many years.
ALL STAR 5
PG: Ali Swaggmeyer- Lightning 22.8ppg 7.6rpg 4.5 apg
SG: Anita Brown - Magic 24ppg 6.7rpg
SF; Alex Ciabattoni - Suns 20ppg 9 rebs 5.5 apg
PF: Kisha Lee- Cougars 23ppg 10 rebs
C: Kayla Standish - Redbacks 20ppg 9 rebs

^^^ absolute rubbish they are the bench sbl players (some are not even bench sbl as they are in the sbl squad but dont suit up) who make up div 1 teams
They wouldn't beat any sbl team with their imports

^^so the suns DL team would be the suns SBL team? Yah great thinking genius

We have the same problem in our club where (some) members of the board etc don't see SBL as the priority "it's about developing junior programs" - I don't get it. Aren't we trying to build these kids up to play SBL one day? Why else are they there? Fun? Go play domestic.

"Sure, lets up the salary cap so clubs can waste even more money (which will probably lead to me paying more for my son's WABL fees etc.), great idea!!"
Newsflash: it's not all about you!

Anyone else cringe when holmen said he is ready to die tonight?

^^thanks for your input parsons

After watching a few of Willetons live streams the last few weeks I thought I’d check out Hawks TV.
What a great initiative by Parsons it gives a great insight into behind the scenes that most of us don’t get to see
A greater appreciation of Parsons as a coach after watching these and can only hope that some other coaches open the doors to their inner sanctum next season for SBL fans

If the opportunity is there I say why not. Great addition who can share his college experience with our young squad. Considering since Josh went down we've essentially had a 7 man rotation, its good to give our boys a bit more rest prior to the Finals.
I understand people saying why when he wont play finals, but i think given before last weekend we had to win two games to qualify then it makes sense from a security side of things. Sammy backs our younger brigade seeing he's coached alot of them for most of their wabl careers, having Sunday is more an insurance thing more than anything else IMO

with only the one round left in both S.B.L and W.S.B.L .
can some-one please tell me what the statistical awards are.
for example is it the most rebounds overall or the highest average
is it the most points or highest average.
there seems to be some tight finishes coming up in both competitions.

King is in Europe Knowles had ACL surgery.

Why have King & Knowles not played for the Suns WSBL in the last few weeks? They were playing handy contributions off the bench before Edwards started back.

WABL Women's D league Final Preview
Perry Lakes 11 Wins 2 Loss - Minor Premiers
Lakeside 10 Wins 3 Losses - 2nd Place
Matchups (PL named first)
Renkema (12ppg) v T Flynn (6ppg)
Ashby (8ppg) v Duffield (17ppg)
Hooper (15ppg) v Waight (7ppg)
Green (12.5ppg) C Jacobs (10ppg)
Teasdale (10 ppg) v Green (8ppg)
Both teams have a starting group with players in regular SBL rotations this year.
Perry Lakes led the league in scoring and 5 weapons on the floor, athletic and 3pt threats in Ashby and Hooper. Bella Green is an athletic defender and slasher who will get the job of slowing down scoring machine Paris Duffield. Duffield averaging 3.5 threes per game for Lakeside.
For the Lightning the success of their WSBL program has trickled down into the D league with the same structure and rules providing the same success this year. They are boosted by the inclusion of twins Amy and Claire Jacobs who cover the injury to Lizel Buckley.
This will be a run and gun game as neither team wants to play in the half court. Both teams have one true big, both can stretch the floor.
Lakeside need to control the glass as Ashby, Green and Teasdale crash the offensive end. Perry lakes will need to slow the lightning's running game and lock down Duffield on the break.
Lakeside have the edge in bench depth with scorer Amy Jacobs and Jae Flynn coming in.
Prediction: Lakeside to take home the first trophy of 2018 by 14 points with C Jacobs Finals MVP.

When in metro area when do the D1 teams play? As it's senior women and mem as double header on Fri/Sat nights.

Stupid renaming. Why not just call it WABL. SBL Div1 sounds like another semi-pro league below SBL intead of WABL/juniors.

Where is Edwards? Big loss for them

slammers women will defeat the Kalamunda suns on Friday night in eaton
suns have no Jessie Edwards this weekend, and look tired and sore on Friday night against the tigers.
this then leaves hawks and senators to play for the last finals position.

WSBL Power Rankings
One week to go and this year the finals matchups come down to a couple of games.
1. Lightning 21-1.
They powered through the regular season going undefeated on the road, a first since the early 2000's. In form and injury free, Mansfield has this team hungry for a title.
2. Redbacks 16-5.
They will stay 2nd and welcome the return of Standish. Dyer coming into form at the right time of the season. Clear second seed. Have eagles to close out the season.
3. Flames 15-6.
Will stay 3rd. Got blown out in the first quarter against Lightning but fought back behind the steller play of LLoyd in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The team will be without Bourne for the rest of the season which is a massive loss. But Petrick performs best in adversity and they still have some of the best talent on the court. Cougars in last round
4. Tigers 14-8.
Had big wins over Suns and Hawks to steal 4th seed last round. The team is in form and Parker how much home court can help this time of year. Can they win with one big is the question.
5. Suns 13-8. Locked in 5th. Form of Jewel Williams had given this team a solid 4th scoring option. Still a talented starting unit that will give Willetton a tough QF match up. The season matchup being 1-1.
6. Magic 10-11. Will Stay 6th with a game in hand and H2H over Hawks. Final game of the season v Wanneroo. This is a dangerous team. Palusna is in read hot form as possibly the best big in the league, add in the form of Brown and Milo now back this team knows what to do to make it back to the GF. Rocko certainly wont have any easy 3 v 6 matchup here.
7. Hawks 9-12. It all comes down to a couple of possibilities. If Slammers win on Friday v Suns (at home) and Stirling beat Hawks they they are out of the finals race. A Slammers loss will mean PL will be 7th or 8th depending on the game v Stirling.
8. Senators 9-12. Stirling has the H2H over Slammers so it comes down the their game v PL to decide if they finish 7th or 8th.
9. Slammers 9-12. They must win at home v Suns to play finals. Simple equation. Cant finish higher than 8th. That margin of loss v PL at Bendat in round 16 has come back to haunt a bit. Reward a first round match up v Lakeside! Will Suns take it easy in their last round game knowing the result means nothing for them.
I think Slammers will get Suns down at Eaton with too much to play for and a team that matches up pretty well with Suns. Stirling for the win over PL at home to avoid the Lightning.
This would mean the defending champs are not in this years playoffs.
Projected Quarter Finals
Lakeside (1) v Southwest (8)
Perth (2) v Stirling (7)
Rockingham (3) v Mandurah (6)
Willetton (4) v Kalamunda (5)

Genuine question here. What are the rules re div1 players playing sbl? Is it that you can only play in one or the other each week or what?SBL starters are ineligible, bench players are fine.
