WA SBL - Aug 2018

Yes streaming again tonight from 7:20pm through the SBL Facebook page. Myself and Mark Utley will be on commentary. For those wanting to listen to the game if unable to watch, 98five will also have the audio play by play simulcast from 7:20

Any team that does not score over its final 12 possessions whilst the opposition score 21 points on their corresponding possessions deserves to lose the game, grand final or not. Hats off to Laleside, they beat a more talented side with their style of play. They were by far the most efficient team on the floor.

Now I guess the Magic buy better talent (glad I’m not one of their wabl parents) to go the next step. Their window of opportunity is closing quickly though.

Years ago

There is streaming for tonight?

Years ago

Losing a grand final from sixth place to a team that lost one game all year is hardly "choking".

Is there an episode of SBL Slam for this week?

If the Wolves lose, Ettridge should count his lucky stars if his contract is locked in past 2018

Years ago

I think Etto's record speaks for itself - 6 grand finals in 8 years. 2 championships and they are in with an opportunity of a 3rd.

Love him or hate him, from an outsiders perspective he has done a pretty good job.

I remember the same being said about the Hawks in the early 2000's - remember the concern with an SBL Chief Commisioner also being the head coach of the team that was dominating???

Years ago

Agreed but the wildcard is Ettridge has choked before to an awful Lakeside team in a GF. It could happen again.

Wolves coaching staff aka the leader of the pack himself undoubtedly @blueandwhite. and he wonders why the only people behind the Wolves are their supporters themselves. it’s a shame one person can cause so much hate towards the club. I’m sure most don’t hate the club they hate the coach.
Apparently he needs reminding that the player from the club he is continuously hating on is the player that WON him the championship a few years back (funnily the last one he won before he couldn’t win anymore aside from Saturday’s championship that’s being handed to him). if he weren’t so arrogant (for reasons no one knows of, he won ONE championship how many years ago?) then maybe Hire would still be there dominating Saturday night for him too. We all know the Mayor wouldn’t have left his town for no reason.
Wolves will win on Friday because they have been handed this on a silver platter and should be thanking Holmen for not playing, Rocko for knocking off Gero and Stirling for beating Redbacks. they are the only side full strength and if they don’t win and the usual ‘choking-curse’ strikes again then everyone will be shocked. I don’t think anyone is expecting Hawks to win we are just all hoping . So Ettridge take your championship you won’t even have to work for Saturday night and get it over with already. Whoopdy-do!

Wolves (unfortunately) by 30.

"Mandurah have never won a championship tho? I heard they were 0 from 6 in Grand Finals, could be wrong"

You are right. But that song was blaring post game, hopefully for them not prematurely

Anonymous
Years ago

Mandurah played it after their win as well

Years ago

Not sure why everyone's ragging on R@nD0m, who isn't around here much, instead of the anons who have been talking shit all week.

Not sure about the we are the champions song after the game tho
Was it specifically played immediately after the game, or just part of the post-gamem playlist?
Anonymous
Years ago

Well this must be what obscurity looks like then. Congrats to the Hawks on a well deserved win. Not sure about the we are the champions song after the game tho, particularly with the Wolves boys in attendance

Years ago
Redbacks had everyone, at home, no Emma K for Magic.
Good luck on the road with Em back
Well I guess all that made a huge difference then.

Interesting last 26 seconds of the Magic v Redbacks game.Redbacks call a time out and then nothing happens after that and the game is finished.Obviously stats bench too involved in watching the game and not the clock on the computer.Did anything happen after the timeout?
Not really. Lipscombe missed a rushed three on the buzzer.

What worked for the Hawks in the second half of the season is not there anymore, respect to the players, but Holmen is a massive out and not just because the player he is.
With him on court Purser was able to play 3 where he had the advantage against White, in the first 5 minutes he was unstoppable, after Holmen got injured he had to switch to Hire and he can't contain Hire.
Carlwell is good, but he was the only big the Hawks had and he was exposed on the defensive end and at the other end the Flames picked off the passes when he sealed.
The Flames have too many shooters for the Hawks to contain, the game is at Rocko, the Hawks might have a plan, but the Flames didn't shot the ball that well, i expect a better percentage on Friday.
Unless Holmen comes back (and he's fully fit) i can't see the Hawks getting close to the Flames.
As for the Flames fans being too cocky: it's the semis, so far the Flames have every reason to be confident.
Sure, the Wolves have every reason to feel in the box seat, but so did Gero.
Both Stirling and Rockingham proved that regular season results and positions mean nothing, both Hire and White have grand final experiences, the pressure will be on the Wolves :)

Yep, SA has overtaken us. Didn't think that was possible until the DJgate affair.

Well, if you thought WA SBL "fans" were delicate and salty little petals, have a look at the Southern beats Forrestville thread. They put the WA keyboard warriors to shame with the saltiest thread I've seen. Only Lacko bashing comes close.

Anonymous
Years ago

Hawks will need something special to win at Rocko. Take the best import and starting point guard out of any SBL team and they will struggle. Hard to replace that sort of experience no matter how deep the team is. And Holman is all class.

Years ago

is rintala going to be available this weekend for the suns.
also is ciabattoni available this weekend.

if both these girls are unavailable we could possibly see another major blow out - even without schagmeyer. was that result on Friday night 51 points a record semi-final loss.

not sure if steindel got injured Friday went down hard, and limping after game apparently.

If the MC was directed at me you're way off your mark, my son plays for the Flames so have no reason to hate them :)
Yes, i was disappointed to see Holmen hurt, unless you are the creature who was sitting in front of me laughing and cheering when it happened you would feel the same, then again i don't know you, so...
I stated that Rocko shot heaps of 3's, if i'm wrong i stand corrected, ditto about the percentage, these were facts, regardless who your team is.
Rocko has the tendency to ball watch, if you watch the game (and understand it) you would see it; not guessing way, i'm not a player or coach, so i don't have a clue.
I believe that the Flames can play a really great offensive set when they're focused, they have the players, experience, they compensate well for their lack of height, but they're a young team and they can be exposed unless they're playing the starters for a long time.
I still believe that the Flames will take the series 2-0, probably play the Wolves in the final and, regardless what some might say i reckon it will be a great game.
Mind you i'd prefer Flames vs Senators, seeing Ellis and White on opposing teams, Hire vs Ellis and, of course, the sentimental part, two lower ranked teams making it to the big dance :)
Guess now this makes me a Wolves hater too :)

Ok MC thanks for your input. Sorry the Hawks disappointed you because we all know you hate Rockingham. Enjoy drinking that Haterade all week

Rockingham is not looking great, it's more like the Hawks were ordinary after Holmen went down ( hope wasn't the ACL, he didn't looked good), was looking forward to his battle with Hire.
The Flames had problems with the zone, about 40% of their shots were from long range, but only made about 20% of them.
When they execute and play with discipline they're good, but some 3's they launched was 3-4 seconds on the shot clock with the rest of the team still at half court.
The Flames help defense at best is at U16 level, not the first time, they have problems helping on cutters or even on a basic backdoor.
Still without Holmen the second game will be a formality only, but they will need way more than tonight against the Wolves

Years ago

Magic won by a point. I wouldn't be calling the series either way based on that game.

Does home court really mean all that much in SBL? Nobody's traveling that far and crowds are generally pretty close to 50/50 anyway. Outside of Geraldton, Goldfields and Bunbury I'm skeptical of the notion there's that much of an effect.
Years ago

SBL threads have the weirdest trolls.

No Boag for Magic next round
Did the Magic win game two while I wasn't looking?
Years ago

Yeah the suns are. Considering Schwagmeyer didnt even play.

Years ago

Actually it was pretty original I thought.

Years ago

will all 3 country teams in the MSBL be looking for new coaches next season?
there was constant talk all season the catalano was no good and just took the job because know one else put there hand up or applied.
what about paul craig - multiple championship winner and knows his stuff.

you would think that ray evans has run his race as well, people are bagging lako and evans slips under the radar.
what about big dan hunt coming back to gero to perhaps coach ?it sounds like his son liam is going to base himself in Geraldton. dan logical choice.

giants is the most interesting one with scott rubbery departing the job.
their fill in coach nicholls done a good job and is still in kalg - maybe he is the logical choice.

I hope all 3 clubs can get organised early and get back up into the top 4 teams in the league once again .

Years ago

Roberts is a beast. He outworks pretty much everyone on the court and that is how he is successful. He is bigger stronger and more physical so when he gets to higher leagues that advantage diminishes.

Interesting that his averages were so much lower this year than the last season at the redbacks. Was he hurt? Bad coaching? Not enough ball to go around?

The old Perry Lakes stadium and, I'm sure, the Bendat stadium, was and is available to other clubs if they were to choose to move there.

Would be great for the finances of basketball in WA if another club moved in - when they added another few courts. Bendat has been outgrown by demand already.

Anonymous
Years ago

Yeah right. So if Joondalup, Rocko, kalamunda etc played there, they would have over 200 teams of juniors travel to Floreat to play each Saturday.

Years ago

If any other club/association played there Bendat would generate the same turnover.

Anonymous
Years ago

The last time the Wolves played the Hawks in a G/F Hire was a beast, got every rebound and gave no second chances. Robbins WWF'd Lee into submission and the Hawks coach is still trying to work out what a pick is if it's not that thing used to break ground.

Anonymous
Years ago

If the Hawks were moved away from Bendat then BWA would lose $150k and be bankrupt.

Years ago

Poor point as SBL has nothing to do with AFL.

Anonymous
Years ago

^ Just like the MCG is completely neutral for AFL...

Years ago

Hawks should be moved somewhere else anyway. Bendat should be completely neutral.

Years ago

Wow at the Wolves hate. They have lost half the Grand Finals they have been as favourites so are trying to rectify this by becoming more familiar with the venue of the final beforehand. Not arrogance just a precautionary step.

Years ago

Whoah.. never said subpar? He's a great import i was only questioning the "best the league has seen" part.. he is high character and always produces. But the league has seen some impressive imports

Anonymous
Years ago

Anyone who thinks Roberts is subpar is nuts! Ask anyone who's played on a team with him and they will tell you he is one of the most competitive driven athletes in the whole comp. Has put up some crazy numbers in the past (all you people seem to care about) but this year they weren't spectacular because of how stacked the team was. I agree with the above that any club would love to have him on their team. Elite defender, rebounder and can get hot on O still.

Years ago

I actually think the Hawks could beat the Wolves, especially considering the GF would be on the Hawks home floor.

Anonymous
Years ago

Arnold has no stock anyway he is only an assistant coach and Lako's mouthpiece. Accept the fact you lost, underachieved and get on with it.

Years ago

Um, Roberts is a great import but settle down. To call him the best import the league has seen recently is reaching considerably...

JT
Years ago

Also the 25-11 scoring run began well before Roberts and Redhage fouled out.

JT
Years ago

I would suggest any team in this league would want Lee Roberts. He is far and away the best import his league has seen in awhile.

Also, I’m not a Stirling fan just calling it as I see it.

Also, how does fouling out Redhage & Roberts mean that your D league team is now on the floor?
They had Barrow and Hussey in their lineup.

I thought their were a couple of mysterious calls but they seemed to go both ways rather than exclusively in Stirling’s favour.

Years ago

700844, assuming you are correct, I'm sure Roberts teammates, coach, and club were happy for him to be so casual, and not take it seriously and let them all down while getting paid. He and the team would have all got together after the loss and pissed themselves laughing at us thinking Perth and him wanted to win!

Years ago

They recruit the best team but a dud coach. Boggles the mind.
