Aussie U/17 rep Bines quits bball for AFL

He's Glenn Bines son

The biggest challenge in Aussie basketball is the lack of a pathway for our juniors , whilst the Australian level players make headlines when they head to the AFL there are plenty of others that give up and chase the AFL dream given the money on offer. How can we retain young Aussie ballers when they have to move overseas to pursue their dream

Years ago

Of course this isn't an issue, the NBL has DPS up until the age of 25 so if ex basketballers aren't on AFL lists at 21-22 then that it plenty of time to become reaccustomed to basketball again and another point is besides Terrence Ferguson (I don't think Americans should count in this argument) was Joe Ingles the last teenager to make an impact on an NBL court so these Basketballers turning to footy is in due because NBL teams aren't giving teenagers a substantial role and if they are that talented and have that much potential then the NBA is a far greater goal and college basketball.

I don't think we want to lose anyone to footy but the risk/reward is heavily favoured towards footy for its pay so who can blame them?

Basketball will get them back

Stay in school kids.

Bines will make more in his first season with West Coast than his entire SEABL career, and that's about the highest level in basketball he'd reach.

The base is around $90k plus game payments of $1-3k depending on the level, so good luck to him.
