Canadian team stronger than ours?

This tourney should be played in China 2019 as a curtain raiser to the men's WC.
They don’t need to be a men’s curtain raiser. Time people stop putting women’s sports behind men’s, it’s the god dam 21st century not the 1800s.
As for team, Mitchell is by far the best choice, no way would you want the likes of Whitcomb in that team, but serious concerns looking at the injury list of those players, great to have some veterans but Bunton and Madgen both always injury risk, When was the last time a Bunton even played, and Mansfield has been injured the entire SEABL season and didn’t impress in the few games she did play
Very strange selection really, agree it will be a “just give it to Cambage” team, which considering her track record won’t get them to the finish line, she will probably be ejected again .
Is Brondello actually going to,coach at this tournament or will she be the Clayton’s coach again leaving it to her husband or Chambers.
At least though looks like finally some sense re Lavey has surfaced, Blicavs has been off in SEABL so not surprising with that omission, and my jury’s out on Ebzery, she’s too inconsistent.

This tourney should be played in China 2019 as a curtain raiser to the men's WC.

With lyttle out of the Spain team, they are left with Ndour at centre who doesn't get many minutes.
If we can slow there guards and torrens down, we have a chance.
France is on par with us. Canada maybe a slight step below.
Japan's a tough one. The ball is going to move so fast. Will we be able to slow them down?
Belgium and turkey have a few good players.
Nigeria may surprise.
No one else really looks a threat.

look at match ups against other countries -
who will run with Bree Stewart ?
who will contain EDD ?

Think George would start over smith.

So something like Mitchell-O'Hea-Talbot-Smith-Cambage with Ebzery/Allen the first to rotate through the guard/wing positions.
Probably as good a team as we could hope for. Semi Finals should be the target

Jarry has gone down hill. Still young though.. maybe she can get back to her best.
And with no Whitcomb or Wallace, our 3 pt shooting will be up to Ebzery, Ohea and Allen.

What happened to Rachel Jarry? I've kind of lost track of women's bball. Do we have great shooters to surround Cambage in the team that's been announced?

Donnelly and Wallace will come into the backcourt next year guaranteed.

A lot of 'just lob it into cambage'...

http://www.fiba.basketball/womensbasketballworldcup/2018/team/Australia#|tab=roster

Frontcourt is great even without Tolo as Cambages backup. bunton is a great player and will hold her own.
Small Forwards Ohea, Allen and Talbot are versatile and have great size for that position. Will be tough for Sara Blicavs to get back in. Hard to see who she'll push out.
Backcourt is terrible imo. Ebzery the only one I see holding her position come Olympics.

4th, 5th or 6th place finish.

Nah, they took Mitchell instead.

Not sure about madgen for me, didn't look great in warm up games or seabl.

No Lavey, hooray, we just got a whole bunch better. I like the look of this team, good balance

Wow, no Blicavs...

World Cup team announced...
http://basketball.net.au/chemist-warehouse-australian-opals-announced-for-2018-fiba-world-cup/
5'5 Mitchell
5'7 Mansfield
5'10 Ebzery
5'11 Madgen
6'1 Ohea
6'2 Allen
6'2 Talbot
6'4 Smith
6'4 Magbegor
6'4 George
6'5 Bunton
6'8 Cambage

Donnelly averaged
16.5 pts, 6.8 rbds, 8.3 asts in the qbl
Hurst averaged
24.2 pts, 6 rbds, 6.7 asts in the qbl
Both couldn't get a look in the 20 player squad?

Wallace, Blicavs and Tolo would have made this team a whole lot better.
Alot of women that should not be in the 20 and a lot were left out.

The thing that screwed us at the Olympics wasn't the talent of our players. It was Joyce. He had ineffective offensive and defensive sets. His rotations sucked. But worst of all he massively alienated 3 or 4 of our top level players to the extent that they refused to play (hence the strange squad selections).
We now have arguably the best coach Australia has produced who the players want to play for even when she isn't actually coaching the games/tournaments.

I'm pretty sure ebzery would do the same in 30 mins.
Cambage averaged 23.5 and 10.3, penny averaged 13.2, 4.7 and 5.5.
No one else contributed much except Tolo in limited minutes.

In 29 mins a game...

11.3 pts, 3rbds, 4.5asts last Olympics for Mitchell.

I think Mitchell was either our highest scorer or 2nd highest at the Olympics??

Had plenty of other options at pg over Lavey. It's BS..

We really are going to struggle if Liz doesn't perform well. Mitchell will not bring points.
We need Liz surrounded by shooters.
Whitcomb for me. Ohea at sf, ebzery at pg, George at pf.

Really going to be relying on Liz in this one. Hopefully she can continue her hot form and a few other players step up enough to give her some room to work.

Next gen...
Most of the current players won't be there after the Olympics. Only about a1/2 on the list of 20 will remain. Some will be too old and some will get pushed out by quality youth.
After 2020 olympics...
Allen(28), Talbot(26) Smith(24), Magbegor(21), Bunton(27) from this group only.
Cambage(29) a maybe if she chooses to go around again.
Ebzery(30) and Cumming(Blicavs)(30) will be the leadership/veterans.
Mansfield(31), Kunek(29), Seekamp(28) I See getting overtaken by youth.
Add currently injured Wallace(24) and Blicavs(27).
10 places filled, only 2 guard spots open after 2020.
G
Wallace, Ebzery, Cumming(Blicavs), ?, ?
F
Talbot, Allen, Blicavs
P
Cambage, Bunton, Smith, Magbegor

Without Cambage, we would be terrible.
I think you'll see a few changes before Olympics.
At least one new pg + Wallace, Blicavs and Tolo coming in.
This WC, I would ditch Mitchell for Whitcomb.
Ebzery, Whitcomb, Ohea, George, Cambage as starting 5.
Mansfield, Blicavs, Talbot/Allen, smith, Bunton second unit.
Maybe seekamp as the spare or magbegor for development.
Mitchell, Lavey, Tupaea, Madgen, Kunek, Griffin, Garbin missing out.
1 of seekamp or magbegor too.

Japan on the up for sure. We are in the mix just needs to happen on the day. I'd put Aust ahead of Canada and Belgium at present.
Aussie team looks good.
The challenge is for our next gen to take the reins - Talbot, George, Cambage, Seekamp, Smith, Allen, Magebor etc it is all in front of them to seize the moment and say "the future is here".

Not all doom and gloom in SA basketball just because the 36ers sucked this year:
Australian Boomers swingman Brad Newley has claimed the Gaze Medal for the first time in his career, for Men's International Basketball Player of the Year, announced at the Basketball Australia iiNet MVP Awards dinner from the Palladium at Crown on Monday night.
Jayco Australian Opals forward Abby Bishop has claimed the Women’s Australian International Basketball Player of the Year Award, the Maher Medal, announced at the Basketball Australia iiNet MVP Awards dinner from the Palladium at Crown overnight.
