WA SBL - Sept / Off Season 2018/19
Wow!! Ettridge and his wolves are just fantastic at developing their own juniors through to SBL level. Four locals on the bench must be a great achievement. They draw from the largest pool of kids in the southern hemisphere and they've got four through to the SBL bench. Forgot about the last 10 years when they had almost none?

Wolves coach Ben Ettridge might be a little bewildered with the classification of the likes of Earnest Ross, Marcus Alipate and Liam Hunt with the Buccs as unrestricted players.
But at the end of the day he is proud of having young, local players coming through to give his squad strong depth and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
It also makes him look forward to a challenge like awaits on Saturday night in Geraldton.
“I might need to get out our Australian immigration map and work out where all these places you can come from and not count as an import,” Ettridge said.
“Dan Hunt’s son is a bit like Clive Weeden where he grew up in the US but has an Aussie passport, then they have the little Tongan point guard, Earnest Ross and all power to them.
“Good on them, but we rolled out Ben Gaspar, Lachy Strelein, Jordan Wellsteed and Joel Offereins on the weekend who got the job done. I’m sure they’d take those four kids on their bench any day of the week.
“That’s the model a lot of clubs like to go for but if you look at what works with clubs like Perry Lakes, Cockburn and us, those teams that put your focus on your under-14s, 16s and 18s teams with those kids suddenly in your SBL team and they are embedded in your culture and part of the club.
“That’s how you build sustained success. One championship every 20 years is good but to be in that upper echelon for a long time is what a lot of clubs want to do because that attracts sponsors and good people to your club.
You preach but you don't live that life

Jackson Hussey? Michael Vigor? Earnest Ross? Jameel McKay?
all names I've heard...

The leap in quality is huge from domestic to WABL (I’m talking Championship division, maybe not D3 and D4)
The leap in quality is large from WABL to D1 (mainly because boys and becoming men, bigger bodies and open division)
The leap in quality is HUGE again from D1 to SBL.

Been coaching junior basketball for about 25 years. In that time I've only known of one player to play D1 / D League who did not play WABL. It can be done, but rare due to the lack of serious competition at domestic level.
There's a difference between there, they're and their somewhere.

Yeah, nothing to do with juniors developing their game so they get to be good enough to play D1 and maybe then SBL. FMD.

^ one leads to the other^

I'm not understanding where wolflady is coming from. Saying they need high caliber recruits and complaining about no pathway for juniors. If you have 2 imports and 2 high caliber recruits, there is still room for 8 more. Just get good enough and you get a berth. If you're not quite good enough, go to Eastern Suns, East Perth etc.

I don’t get it, so should Wolfpack turn away Denehey and Miotti to allow some U18s play? I legit don’t know any decent D1 or U18s in the women’s pathway up at Joondalup. The men are killing it with Curtis, Wellstead, Gaspar, Strelein, Chamberlain.
I’m sure Nix was given a brief to win, and with Denehey and Miotti, plus 2 import spots, he’s going a long play if he can retain Martin et al.

@287
You guys tried the ‘build from within’ approach last year, and got slaughtered...
Maybe time to try something new, otherwise what else are you using SBL for? Helping players go to Wildcats or Lynx? Last I checked there weren’t any on that path in recent history. So if they’re going to spend money on recruiting, it may as well be to win. Otherwise enjoy coming 17th or whatever it was again..

Surely, Wolflady, you're not surprised with this. Wolves have been on this path for years. Wolves have been a major disservice to junior basketball for quite some time.

Nix will only be there for a year and then onto the next team

D'Agostino well in front of those two guys.

Lets just say Barrow isn;'t the only ex-Buccs player heading to Tigerland. Look for Armors replacement to be announced shortly.

Yep Mark Utley confirmed at Suns

Vinny Zollo spotted playing C3 domestic at willo

"Wow, the playing stocks of WA are awful."
Um did you miss the part where Greg Hire touched the ball on an NBA court and could have scored if only circumstances were different and he could shoot a basketball?

The bush baby just won't / can't let it go, can he / she / it? So sad that he / she / it has to read everything that's written on here about the bush league when he hates it so much.

Those rags don't cover bush leagues, despite themselves being bush league when it comes to newspapers.

Was there any newspaper coverage ie. The West or Sunday Times, of the SBL Grand Finals?

wa state league a strong and growing comp . crock go enjoy your SEABL buddy !! oh that's right there is no SEABL.

the redbacks went thru the same procedure 12 months ago when they were looking for a new womens coach.they firstly chased a " big fish " but were unsuccessful .
they then bought in a independent group of people to interview the coaches including tim rendulic.
if this is the same situation I cant see rendulic getting the job.

Armour will be in dat Purp next season

Why is Kyle Armour leaving Willo and where is he going?
Does that mean Andrew Black gets the starting PG gig & Mitch Clarke becomes the back-up PG?

Who would want to go to Willeton? Junior program is a huge fail after U/16s. One championship winning team above U/12s
Consequence of that is the SBL program is a huge fail.

who did dagastino beat for the job at stirling ? they have a talented line-up they need to find 2 good quality imports and they will make playoffs again for sure.
whoever wrote about craig watts at Mandurah may be correct but with the same team and carly boag back from injury they will have another serious crack at the championship.
the biggest improvers will be the wolves , a healthy amos plus Charles nix coaching who will ask the club for 2 restricted players . this would see a line-up.
amos
belcher
martin
kidner
ironmonger
import
import
willeton will need to find some better restricted players there local talent is average at best.
Kalamunda need to secure ciabattoni to challenge I believe she has not committed , however rintala will play on.
redbacks will need to keep steindel or else they will be back in the same boat as before nix arrived
lakeside will need to find a replacement for fipps first of all but will remain the favourites .
hawks need a scoring point guard - they missed Donovan this season but most of all they missed Jeffers without doubt
slammers losing players left right and centre / no coach.
cougars can only get better with another season under the guidance of Thompson ( figjam ) although miotti will be gone ?
eagles need to find some help for their younger players.
depends on who coaches the flames but with the signing of allen is huge for them , also how much the board are willing to spend on imports , this team will challenge for the title. watch for a lot of player movement here . it happens every year. they need bourne back or some-one the same ?@$

Salary cap enforcement will be strict this coming year - no way they could fit all that in the cap

Dion Dagostino new Senators WSBL coach

nat burton would surely become a non- retricted player next season . this would allow them to grab an import or an Australian restricted player .

Which teams do we see as being the biggest winners and losers this offseason? Any rumours that will see a team jump up the ladder or fall down it?

tayah burrows will be playing for some-one in perth as her family has moved from bunbury - the new girls playing for the lynx are probably already been targeted by local clubs. expect to see perry lakes strengthen further .

Maddie Allen resigned with Rocko, does this mean Petrik will return to women?
Rumours of many women on the move this year. Could be interesting
