WNBL Round 2
Roberts has changed her mind and withdrawn from North's AFLW team due to a "breakout SEABL season"

Theres lots that have been poached from seabl this year.
Pretty crazy that they are choosing players who have never played a afl before.

Brancastiano also chosen in draft

Roberts is also going to north Melbourne.

Yeah, well deserved!
Nailed team of the week. Allen-McPhee-Griffin-Batkovic-Tobin

McPhee's performance would be enough to win it plenty of weeks, but no argument from me on this one.

and the winner is ... Kelsey Griffin ...averaging 22 and 11 ....just a little tooo good...

WNBA- probably only see half those listed below return I think.
Whitcomb-Seattle
Mitchell-Phoenix
Talbot-Phoenix
Allen-NewbYork
George-Dallas
Cambage-Dallas
Wallace-Atlanta
Outsiders
Tolo
Bunton

Mansfield was injured in the 2 pre warm up games. Not a fair period to judge. We have 2 full WNBL, WNBA and Euroleage seasons before the Olympics and only need to finish top 2 in Asian qualifiers. We'll be fine.
The difference between now and last go round is Brendan Joyce was a bad choice for the national team program. Too much ego and not enough knowledge of the woman's game.

Mansfield was terrible in pre warmup games for the WC.
The Asian cup only has 2 high level teams in it. Don't think she's proven yet.

So Mansfield has gone from proven backup to not even worth a mention?
Still right in the mix for mine, and ahead of Hurst & Wilson.
Looking forward to seeing what type of seasons Mangakahia & Wallace can put together.

If Lavey can play like she did in game one throughout the season, she's a chance.
Still need to see what Wallace can do at this level and also should keep an eye on mangakahia in the ncaa.

Yet they didn't get chosen...

Hurst and Kelly Wilson along with Leilani Mitchell ae the best options for the Opals right now. Age has nothing to do with it if they can prove they are playing at their best IMO.
Perth Lynx...wow!

Yeah, unless something changes significantly they are both instant Opals inclusions at their respective positions (and frankly I would extend that to Mitchell as well until it is proven that age has actually caught up to her. It certainly has not yet. Sue Bird is still the best point guard on the planet and she's 5 years older than Leilani) ... so IMO it's going to largely come down to which aussies step up and prove themselves to be worthy of starting in front of Leilani/Sami/Kelsey.
But plenty can happen in 18 months.

On current form there's no way Griffin isn't picked as first naturalised player for Opals. That said Sami just top scored for her French side overnight so doing all she can.
Happy to let season play out before making too many judgements on returning Opals.

Hurst and Kelly Wilson over Madgen easy it should have been.
Too old for the Olympics though...
Atm I would have Nicholson, Seekamp, Whittle, Cole as 3rd string sgs over Madgen.
Mitchell for me is done, I said it a long time ago. Whitcomb is the youngest of the 3 naturalised players and plays the position we need the most.
We should be testing all the next gen pgs and sgs over the next 1.5 years before Tokyo. We have plenty of depth at sf, pf and c.

Surely Sydney will punt Johnson after another poor showing.

I'm going to go easy on them for a while, considering how many would have had a busy schedule leading up to the World Cup, then played that tournament, and had the high of that result as a team. It doesn't surprise me that going back to club basketball could take a while to get into the groove after that.
Hopefully sandy is watching these games.
I'm certain she chose players she knew well and not the best performers.
Madgen is probably an example of that, considering there was no recent form to base her selection on, but Sandy would have been comfortable with her as a player from Phoenix.
When someone is coming in at the last minute I think there's some justification for that though. (Having said that, I'm one of those who think that Hurst seemed to be unfairly overlooked)
Talbot had a great season playing against the world's best, and was a no-brainer for the Opals. I don't think of her as that much of a scorer so I wouldn't be expecting 20 from her every game. Today she was poor I agree. Sandy had her playing a pretty well defined role and playing it well. It remains to be seen how effective Guy can make her.
O'Hea was good today after a pretty average first couple of games, and she would have been fresher than most after missing the pool games at Worlds.
Ebzery has had a slow start to the season too, but playing in an Andy Stewart team would be nothing like playing in a Sandy Brondello team. Plus she has been messed around a bit swapping between the 1 & 2 spots. She'll be fine I'm sure, especially now that Mansfield is returning to action.
Bunton is the only one who has really hit the ground running.

It's been 3 weeks. Plenty of time.

Or it could be that the opals players have come off a tough tornament and not spent a lot of time with their teams yet

A lot of the opals have looked terrible.
Hopefully sandy is watching these games.
I'm certain she chose players she knew well and not the best performers.

Talbot hasn’t fired a shot yet with the Boomers, looked completely disinterested today before she fouled out!

Wnbl...
the ladder was fkd up last year too.

Fire need beck asap.

She's got some class about her. Good finisher at the rim in addition to being able to shoot it.

McPhee ballin. Credit to the young American.

The commentary team at Spirit V Rangers was just in front of where I was sitting and it was the old court announcer not Bernie Harrower.

Raining threes from everyone over in Perth. Surprised that Batkovic isn't taking advantage of he lack of height but Perth's gameplan has worked in the first half at least. Going to be knackered by the endnote playing just a seven person rotation.

k.griffin game's top scorer agen .... player of the week , of course....
griffin haters vied together in lugubriousity ....

Still think MVP is Nurse's to lose, but Griffin has been best player over the comp across three games atm. Her best start to a season in a while (and remember Canberra started last season well too).
Coffey foul trouble cost Adelaide the chance at the game I think.

Nah we are fine. I'd say the quality between hengood/bad imports is highlighted this year. If every team had two imports equal or better to your average starter, then plenty of quality to spread around.
What a game this Canberra v Adelaide has turned out to be. Would've great for tv.

A lack of depth in almost every team...
Not sure we have enough players just yet for a Brisbane team.

For the Bendigo commentary, the 'croaky' voice I believe was former Bendigo head coach Bernie Harrower (please correct me if I am wrong).
Word is that Jarry pulled up sore after the knock on Friday night hence why she sat out vs Bendigo. The Spirit are have certainly shown just that in their first two games!
Sydney's lack of depth was seriously exposed against the Boomers today. Bunton and Tupaea were both good, but without Snell they had nothing else to go to.
I love what Johnson achieved in the QBL, but she is fast becoming a liability for the Flames. 5 points and 9 rebounds her best effort to date today, but as an import, she needs to be playing more than the 16 minutes she played. She certainly is yet to have any real positive impact in this league.

Snell being out really hurts. As soon as the Flames dipped into the bench, things started to go south for them. Then it looked like Bunton had some type of injury concern. Then to make it even worse for them, Tupaea hit her head pretty hard on the floor at the end. She was playing well too. Hopefully all 3 of them are back to 100% quickly.

Melbourne turning it around to grab their first win. Sydney still winless which is surprising.
Adelaide ahead in a close one with Canberra.

Hot start by the Flames combined with some rubbish offence by the Boomers to start this one. 23-8.

Lavey back to her old ways after one game.

^sute is , who are the clowns commentating especially grinding the guy with the croaky voice , need to find ones who can actually pronounce names and speak articulate

Commentary has been painful on this one, made worse by the stream looping.
Bendigo look decent but Dandy are flat. Cole chucking up bricks all night.

Harry is a liability she’s always got something that interrupts her playing

Jarry got hurt in the 3rd term vs Sydney Uni...look inocuous but did not return. Must have pulled up sore.

The teams are doing the streams themselves...
Dandenong do their own and have done so for years now.
Boomers used a different crew last year for the Geelong game which went down without a hitch. Now they are using the Deakin Uni and their students this season.
Bendigo using a company called SupaYou.

Hard to take the wnbl seriously when you can't get a simple stream running.
Setting up at the last minute with no test is just appalling.

Well...first it was Melbourne who could not get a stream up last night in Geelong, and now Bendigo are putting up a terrible stream tonight.
And please pronounce Mijovic's surname correctly PLEASE!

Another broken stream...
