WA SBL - February 2019
Here is the new March thread....
www.hoops.com.au/forum/44901-wa-sbl-march-2019

The mens teams that rock up can usually be categorized three ways...
1. Teams that take the weekend seriously.
2. Those who go half-arsed to protect players.
3. Teams that don't give a flying f%@k and will mainly player div1 players.
The two outer regional teams (Buccs and Giants) will play full strength teams as it's their only chance for a pre-season game. The Tigers have been pretty good over the past couple of years as well, and to a lesser extent the Flames and Redbacks.
Most of the other clubs are in that 'half-arsed' category. The Wolves clearly in the 'don't give a flying f%@k' group.

So what imports are going to cleared to play and suiting up on the weekend at the Blitz?
Or am I wasting my time heading to Warwick to watch a bunch of div 1 guys trying to out-do each other?

There are a couple of clubs willing to take him a second time so he could be a decent team guy. Good luck to him. Must be getting to the twilight years of his career by now.

Easley's SBL career
2008: Cougars
2009: Suns
(2010: Ipswich Force in QBL)
2011: Eagles
2012: Eagles
2013: Hawks
2014: Hawks
2015: Tigers
2016: Slammers
2017: Eagles
2018: Eagles
2019: Suns

Easley has played for Kalamunda previously. This will be his second stint there

The giants just need some stability and a plan to develop some key locals. They have had a revolving door of coaches.
In recent years they have had
Dan Fisher
Michael Haney
Marcus Taylor
Lou Causer
Scott Rubery
Wayne Creek
Creek is in for his second stint but out of all the above he is really the only one who has had a strong plan for development. He is the right man for the job for where they are currently at

the regional teams are notoriously bad, with Mandurah just awful, followed closely by Kal and Bunbury. Gero are long-time finals chockers. When the Giants were in their heyday (2004-2008), the league has great.

Because the Giants play in the league?
Any league is better the more competitive it is. No one wants to see Chicago or Phoenix get smacked every game...

The league is better when the Giants are good.
Why?

Hopefully the Giants can turn it around this year. The league is better when the Giants are good. Bowie will be great for them. Salmon and Malek look good.

Here's a GWN story on two of the Giants new players.....

Fast forward to the 17:26 mark.

only 2 weeks until the blitz , im looking forward to seeing what the giants new players are like.
I think they can push well into contention if there add-ons are legit.

Great to see Ben Johnson doing well down there. Some great guys for him to learn from in Godfrey and Robbins too

Yes Mrs P... Totally my bad lol

R@nD0m I think you meant Ben Johnson playing for Flames (via Perth Redbacks/Lakeside WABL)

Thanks for clearing that up Lukosius!

The Scottish Basketball Federation is not actually FIBA-affiliated, so M.Vigor playing for Scotland "doesn't count" in regards to the Restricted Players rule.
If he played for the Great Britain national team, it would be a different story.

Now that M Vigor has represented Scotland internationally, does that make him a 'restricted' player these days or not seeing as how he isn't playing at his original SBL club this season??

From the lineups you described, sounds like it was well worth the $5 entry fee for a scratch match.

An understrength Flames team (No Hire, Robbins, Travers, C Beard, Ritchart or White) defeated an importless Mandurah tonight by 3 down in the 'Ham.
Was very impressed with 15yo PG that Trahair has... Looks to have a decent future. Godfrey, Pal & Lakeside / Willo product Frank Johnson the standouts for the Flames

Good cause coaching in Australia is average at best

The American assistant coach isn't being paid by lakeside and moved to perth at his own cost with his Aussie girlfriend.

^^^ The advantage of having a church as your parent body - there's all manner of ways of funneling money to players, coaches etc etc
And also makes it easy to get around Basketball Australia's policy of only having two overseas personnel per team (usually your two imports) to encourage local coaches and local coaching development.

You would imagine they would be paying Daniels a fair amount, add an american assistant, 2 american imports, kyle armour, mike vigor, jarrad prue. cheque book is open
whilst this is a great starting 5 i dont know if this team is a real contender?
what bench do they have?
Mackenzie
is Vinci still there?
both have big games every now and then but havent proven to be consistent producers
Not sure how they go against teams like Rockingham, Wolves, Hawks

Geez, how good is it to be able to just fly a coach in from overseas!!!! Some teams can't even afford a 2nd import.....

is it true that lakeside have hired an assistant coach out of the USA for their mens team?
ex player of daniels?

"McIlroy is one of the biggest scrubs brought over to play here! Makes me laugh imagining who made that call to do it..."
And that would be?
And who cares?

biggest deal breaker with curtain is lack of sufficient distance from baseline to the wall. It was never brought up when Redbacks played there a few years ago

Will Alex Loughton "do a Redhage" and return to the SBL to play, seeing he has now retired from the NBL?

Opals take on a strong Russian team tonight at 8:15pm AEST (7:45pm in Adelaide).
This will be a tough game but one in which the Aussies can certainly win.
