NBL 1 Expansion?
I have been rattling on about a concept such as this since SEABL was questioned and the idea of a replacement or restructure was being spoken about, I am for it and can see it working.........

Darwin will be included in the new NBL1 conference up North. Will not be automatic entry for current QBL teams

NBL theme conferences as suggested above would be too many.
Just keep it simple. North, South, West and Central.

Pay for what? All the leagues currently exist anyway, the NBL has said they are assisting in getting business involved further and they in turn get the added exposure/ marketing from the re-brand. The clubs will exist as they are. Each conference is their own individual league like the state leagues currently.
This model actually reduces travel costs further (Eg a North QLD league) as teams are based in regions. The national tournament after the season was going to be brought back anyway regardless of the NBL's involvement once the SEABL disbanded.

NSW teams would struggle to compete financially, they could only really compete if they join as a league. Could you imagine a semi pro team travelling over 5000km to play in Cairns & Townsville? No way would the North QLD teams go for that!
NSW, SA and WA would just need to rebrand eventually. A final set up could look something like this? Keeping the NBL theme going:
WILDCATS CONFERENCE
All WASBL teams
36ERS CONFERENCE
SA Prem league teams
PHOENIX CONFERENCE
SE Melbourne teams plus tassie
UNITED CONFERENCE
All other Melbourne and regional VIC teams
KINGS CONFERENCE
Waratah teams
BULLETS CONFERENCE
SE Queensland teams
TAIPANS CONFERENCE
Rockhampton
Gladstone
Mackay
Townsville
Cairns
NT teams??

Another obvious advantage of rebranding to NBL 1 North is that it legitimises the inclusion of non Qld teams, read NSW teams.
As a name, SEABL worked well. It allowed for Mt Gambier, the Tassie teams and from the ACT in, whereas it would have looked ridiculous if they competed in the Big V, for eg.
I am sure that everyone remembers the shit that went on when the SEABL name was dropped.

Why would the QBL not? It makes sense in terms of branding

The Spartans in the SEABL didn't work as they were the only team north of Canberra and travel etc would have been hard for them to be consistently competitive. The new model would essentially be the QBL rebranded not Queensland teams joining the current NBL1 as the Spartans did in the SEABL. The aim of the NBL is to bring more sponsorship and media which will in turn increase revenue and allow teams to spend more on talent. Whether this works is still yet to be answered but the QBL would be just as strong now as the NBL1 in my opinion anyway so what is there to loose really?

Unfortunately teams from NSW and Qld have generally been shit. With the cheaper entry now for NBL1 that may help them to be more competitive.

Wang Whipper Qld are going to be in next year

It's worthless without teams from NSW, QLD etc

"You can then add teams like Mt Gambier to the south and Canberra or NSW teams to the North if you want to expand further"
So MtGambier is in the South? Canberra is in the North?
What ever drugs you are on they ain't working mate.

Love this concept

I like the North and South Conference idea, which is basically the SEABL and the QBL, as they are the 2 strongest state leagues in Australia.
You can then add teams like Mt Gambier to the south and Canberra or NSW teams to the North if you want to expand further

Can’t really call it NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE 1 if there are only teams from Victoria and a token team or two from Tassie

Why wouldn’t they?

Probably, basketball SA doesn’t want anything to do with it.

Next year will current comp will be NBL1-South and they will add NBL1-North and NBL1-West.
Will basically be just a rebranding of SBL and QBL but there will be a national tournament at the end of the season.
