Alex Mudronja to 36ers...

This is all so funny to read. In my experience these people are the same armchair experts that will say I told you so when they kid does make it. Or even say "my inability to assess talent inspired him to succeed". It is easy to predict the "failures" because the vast majority won't make it. Either way it is funny to watch and listen to you. That is how you people operate.

Your real ability to talent ID comes through predicting those that ultimately will succeed and even better being able to add meaningful value to their journey.

The kid must be having a tough time though; 3 yr pro deal, including 2 yrs on the roster, played for Australia junior team a couple months ago with some of the best young Aussie prospects there are, just played over a quarter testing himself against one of the best prospects on the planet in RJ last week and now in Utah as his team preps for the Jazz game.

Mudronja is not that good to be honest.

Creek has played NBA but that doesn't make him NBA quality.

It's a shame that team loyalty and building a culture isn't a value in the Mudronja family. He probably couldn't accept not being a star after tearing up friday night games with the refs on his side at pasadena. Just take a look a look at what his brother did the other week after the u23 granny. Didn't go with the rest of his team to accept the runners up trophy and instead just left. couldn't accept being a bench player. poor culture, hope he doesn't bring it to the 6ers

He's signed a 3 year deal with the 36ers the first year as a development player and the last two years as a fully contracted player, I would consider that a great deal for him.

Great kid but really bad decision, as he will play little to nothing in Joeys system.

For persons that dont know Alex loved his time at Saint Marys, leaving great team mates and program would have been difficult.
Being offered a 3 year deal with 36s - going pro, great coach, great culture, and a league thats now breading great talent you can see why.
People may not know that the 19 year old has been away from home since the age of just 16 years where he lived at the Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Its time to celebrate South Australia - Alex Mudronja is back in town and will do great things for the 36s and South Australian Basketball!!! Welcome Home.

It seems the vast majority of local talent elect to go to College in the USA.
Then when they graduate, they take the best offer available to them.
For a select few, that's the NBA. Most of the good players seem to go to Europe, with a handful getting offers in the NBL.

It's very hard to develop "local" (as in your own city/state) talent when there are more lucrative offers out there.
eg McDaniels was reportedly offered big bucks to sign with MU last year.

Otherwise what you end up with is guys that have no offers and come home to play in the local league. I think teams do give them opportunities, but very few will ever make the grade.
And when they do, people bitch and moan about why their team is hiring crabs.

To the one anon that is still in denial and keeps bringing up stupid topics, as said earlier, if we knew who you were, I’m sure it would be clear why you’re saying what you’re saying.

In fairness Marty Clark was in charge during DJ's and Mitch's early development years. These two were going to be high level players regardless of HC. Joey backs his guys in which is an important part of development. The coach cops it when his team loses so I guess its only fair to credit them with the natural improvement of highly skilled and athletic players. DJ Creek and Sobey have that something extra.

Everyone is singing the praises of the great developer. Just pointing out plenty have sat on the bench and never made it. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

#595 breathe big fella. I was not comparing the previous DP's to Alex. My comment was for every player Joey developed there has been just as many he has brought in that he didn't develop. The players that he has Creek and Sobey for example have elite work ethic and would have developed anywhere. Have a cup of tea and relax.

Madgen and Newley are the same age.

Newley debuted in the NBL in 04, Ingles debuted in 06, Maher debuted in 92.
Madgen in the only one this decade that has been any good. We obviously missed out on the most recent 3, but they've all been out of the league for years anyway.
All well and good to say we need local talent to add to the team, but if there isn't any, you just take what you can get.
We've done well, in spite of the lack of local talent, of bringing young college returnees and young players from other states.
Creek, Drmic, Froling, Deng, Sobey, DJ, McVeigh, Hodgson. That's a decent list.
We gave Doyle as many opportunities as we possibly could to come good, and he never did. Same with guys like Johns.
We've now grabbed another bloke, who must have been ok at some point to get a Div 1 scholarship, as a Development player. It doesn't even matter if he doesn't come good, he's not in the rotation anyway, but we get first look at him.

Busy thread for a DP.

None of the players you mentioned were official DP’s with a 3 year deal, rostered 2 and 3. None were paid, with exception of Larkins for a few match payments. None of them were COE or Aust team level talent. None were good d1 talent. None of them signed with the agency Alex did either. Just saying.
Get over yourself. Your position is flawed on every angle. I’m sure if we found out who you are, it’d be clear why you’re hating so much.

How did the development of talent go with Larkins, Doyle, Davis....the list is just as long of the failures as is his list of accomplishments. Ever thought the players that succeeded had a better predisposed talent level? Greater work ethic? Not every young player Joey has brought in has become a high level NBL player.

Those that want to complain about local talent. Better get used to it.

I'd hope the 6ers would be monitoring lots of SA kids overseas right now just like most NBL clubs are.
Garang, Hulland, White, Rigoni, Mayen, Hoppo, Heading, Dibiamaka, Sapwell are some of the young men that spring to mind that the 6ers need to have on their radar. Through in the late bloomers Harris, Jimma into the mix now too.

Joey and his staff is proven to take young athletes and develop them. Sobey's, DJs and Creeks development is not by chance.

There has been almost 2 decades of a barron waste of talent from SA. Sorry to say to the poster above, but that time is now over.

Put it this way if its a choice between Johnson (BJ) and Mudronja it isn't really a difficult decision to make is it.

6ers can’t win. People have complained for years they haven’t signed local talent & have let them go elsewhere. Now they sign someone who appears to be a good prospect, certainly one of the best local prospects we have & it’s still the wrong thing.

I don’t think they’re paying him huge money nor are they suggesting he will be a stud right away.

As far as 36ers signings go this off season this would be one of the best, not the worst.

Hangon so you expect that if one of the best prospects out of SA in the past 10 years decides college is not for him and wants to explore options you expect the 6ers to NOT sign him and give him a chance to develop at the NBL level. You want him with Cairns, Illawarra or Sydney? ahhhh ohhhhhhhk.

Plenty of kids leave college early for many reason. There are almost 1000 transfers a season in division 1 college hoops so if Carter got it wrong he can transfer and figure it out.

Let's not forget that if becoming a topline pro is the only measure of success then the vast majority fail will fail to even get to the D1 college level, most D1 college guys will fail to get to the pros and then quite a few pros will fail to be a topline professional. It is easy to sit on here and bag all the failures. It is easy to predict failure, with no real knowledge or insight and be right pretty much all the time. But what about those that predict success and get that right. Become one of those and you won't need to be on here bagging kids. You will actually be IN the game.

Sports is messy and success is rarely a straight line. If it was easy people like the posters above would be there themselves in the game but for whatever reason you are where you are posting sh*t here, anonymously on a forum.

I would suggest this kid would have spent a fair bit of time training with 6ers when he was in town. So Joey would have seen him there.

Up until recently there have not been many male athletes from Adelaide, go CoE (do so well there), MVP of U20 nationals type stuff go to a school like St Marys (one of the top mid major programs in the whole thing) and come back to the 6ers. I for one think this is a great thing for the kid, the sport and the next crop of young men coming through to look up and see a pretty cool pathway for this kid and maybe try to emulate it in their own way.

One thing I know about “googling” things, is that you find out more if you spend time to do actual research. He only attempted 7 shots from three his Freshman year, under a high pressure situation, so hardly a whole body of work. The name Kuhse popped up as being one of the major boosters of the St Mary’s program.

Harry Froling shot the 3 at 21% his last year in college and didn’t average many shots either. But I guess “Phil Jackson” thought he’d come and be rookie of the year also.

I’m not sure why you’ve gone to such lengths to discredit Alex, but it’s not working. I think between Joey, his agency and the Centre of Excellence/National teams, I’ll go with their assessment, not a salty Adelaide based club person.

Yeah, Alex’s agent has Joey’s ear. Same agency as Creek, Sobey, McVeigh, Froling. Notice a pattern? The company has signed great talent, and I can tell you this, they don’t care what his junior club was, just that he has the potential to have a great pro career.
Whilst your busy continuing to ask dumb ass questions that make you sound small minded, ask yourself this, who have you helped/developed?

Ok, answer these questions.
A) Did he have a good, average, bad college year
B) Why did he not play much when the team needed a guard
C) If there was a problem in coaching why not transfer
D) Is his shooting a major liability
E) Will he replace guys like Tyson Hoffman and Akol Deng as practice bait
F) Are there other guys out there with brighter future such as Jimma Dau and Harris who should get contract
G) Why are same people ripping apart Teys signing backing a kid that has no game currently, whoops, hang on, he scored on a young team that needed someone to Jack up shots.
H) Is it purely because he is from sturt and a certain person has Joeys ear atm.

McVeigh had a solid sophomore campaign with 7.5 ppg, pretty handy in a strong conference. Not sure what happened in junior year but Mudronja averaging less than a point and getting beaten out by a walk on is embarrassing. At what basis are you saying he will be a star, good luck for him but there are way more talented kids out there.
What is it with Sturt kids struggling on bigger stage, is it because their junior teams are stacked so whoever has a bad matchup or they are just thrashing teams by just having better talent makes them look better. Isaac White seemed legit and I think will be good in nbl just purely by his work ethic and Rigoni will be interesting with his old man game and fundamentals. But Carter should never have gone Div 1, terribly out of shape. Might have started premier league last year but quickly sat.

Ok, another expert that hasn’t done his research. Firstly, McVeigh had an ordinary college career, which is why he left early also. Check the numbers.
Mudronja, is an 6’5 PG that has huge upside. He left a very good program that won the WCC this year after his Freshman year, so that he could develop further under Joey. He is very young still and will be an NBL star. Before Grida went to the combine, people said he was also not at NBL level etc, and he had a great first year. The signing makes a lot of sense.

I really don't get the Mudronja signing, all club politics aside. Had a very very average college career, surely there are others heading back that had way better. Isn't even a big that sometimes take a while to develop. Isn't even a real specialist in an area. Could see Isaac White as a shooter off the bench but this is really shocking to be honest. Drmic, McVeigh had great college careers, way this looks I don't even think he would start for Sturts premier league team!

Mitch Creek in just one year in the US did a training camp with an NBA team, got three 10 day contracts from multiple NBA teams and impressed his last NBA team so much they've asked him to back over early later this month to start working with their guys and instilling a good team culture.

Creek will be back in the NBA next season if not with Minnesota then another team.

Alex, further to an NBL career, also has a Euro passport and huge upside! Played some outstanding basketball in the SEABL before going away too.
