NZNBL: players in pay dispute?
The problem in the Rangers' case was that payment was rumoured to be delayed, and the promise of future payment inspired future play (and further frustration). And there's the Green family saga involving a company going under (the news of which broke out mid-season, with Daniel on the Rangers and father Jeff coaching the team).

In short, the clubs have very beneficial, flexible contracts (basically hire them as independent contractors) - so they can terminate their agreements anytime without further pay.
And a lot of the types of imports who go down there aren't exactly going to be able to negotiate guaranteed/semi-guaranteed deals.
So what happens is basically, if a team is doing poor, and their season is over or almost over, the team will just terminate their ICA and send them home.
The cost of keeping the player and paying him in such situations outweighs the benefit of keeping him around (i.e you're not going to get more than what you're paying him by keeping him around).
I agree it does need to change. Unfortunately, there is such a huge wealth gap in the NZNBL now, you have teams like Wellington on one hand and the Mountain Airs on the other.
Part of me does sympathise with the smaller, more cash-strapped teams. Having been involved with the clubs, they do things awfully tough and actions such as these aren't by malice or because of greed - its because of real commercial difficulty.

This kind of stuff happened in the NBL too, not all that long ago.
