The FIBA U-19 thread

Think we would have beaten Serbia, they have been pretty bad against the phillipines.

Perry and Anstey out. Another terrible job done by the coaches in Aussie junior ball.
Only Seebohm has performed at junior level in the last several years.

Couldn’t play the 1st half like we did in the 3rd qtr?

Completely outhustled in the first half.

Coe staff preach toughness in the Aussie game but we always show very little desire compared to our opponents.

Yes, Mali, Senegal and Nigeria inparticular will continue to get stronger. It will be very difficult to compete with them.
Mali and Nigeria in the women’s are also rapidly improving with coaching and resources.

How has Mali suddenly competing with us and Canada? Nba global academy influence?

Anonymous

Looks like the guys really struggled with Mali's length but did a great job to pull it out. Tough team to play.

How did fiba work out placings?

Dam, not sure we can get past these teams ahead, Mali ended up in the best position finishing 3rd.

Our turnovers and matador defence in the second half was very cringeworthy... but they won and let's hope they can take confidence from that and learn from those mistakes.

Surely that isn't our best starting 5

Escaped, 3 by froling gets us the win.

Mali have played so much better than us in this second half... who are our clutch players ?

Dengdit being 03 and already 6’8. We could see him become that next pf beyond Adebayo and jones.
Yak has been getting some good reviews, hopefully aus staff are in contact still.

Not saying he’s not a cg, just that he will likely play at sf in that competition and 6’7+ would be his projected height in 2 years.

Early prediction.
Next u19s looks to be...

PG 5'11 T.Wigness / 6’1 B,Bayles / 6’4 D.Daniels(03)
SG 6’5+ M.King / 6’4 T.Armstrong
SF 6’7+ J.Giddey / 6.7+ J.Duach(03)
PF 6’8+ L.Adebayo / 6’10+ B.Jones / unknown PF?
C 6’10 P.Tsapatolis / 7’0 L.Schmidt

Giddey isn't a small forward, he is definately a point guard.

Where did you read that Giddey is 6'7? I think he is 6'6

Is Anyang Garang any good? Or raw physical tools we're hoping for a late bloom from?

Anonymous

Both 6’1 atm. Still some time to grow. One will be on the u17 oceania team and the other on the u16 Asia team most likely.

Anonymous
Years ago

Both pretty small for the next level at under 6’2. Both great shooters but what else can they offer.

What about Smith from Tas or Rasmussen from SA?

I'll say this much - if Maker, Green and King were playing (or any combination of them, really), I'd be 1000% more invested in watching the games.

Years ago

Lots of selections also go on the mates act, all 50/50 or even 40/60 calls favour players who are in the click or have parents in favourable positions. It’s the same in all sports and is bloody annoying.

anon - How can you say that about Wigness? He is by no means inefficient

13 points on 5/9 shooting against Canada
9 points on 4/6 shooting against Latvia

Including 4/6 from 3 so far.

And this is consistent with his play at other tournaments. Remember his like 10/11 FG game last year for Aus?

Wigness rarely takes a bad shot, makes great decisions within the offense, and generates heaps of easy points for teammates with his passing was the catalyst for the Emu's best runs in both games. They have simply been better with him on the floor.

Struggles to involve teammates? That's just a load of ****. He's the best floor general/passer on the team and plays a very pass-1st style.

His impact compared to Isaiah Lee (no offense to him, like the kid) is night and day.

Lee in the 2 games so far -

22 mins, 1/8, 4 points, 1 assist
18 mins, 1/2, 2 points, 2 assists

Wigness and Froling are the 2 best players on this squad and it's not close.

Anyone know why Ducas has not seen one minute yet? Is he injured? Another reason?

Obviously Maker/Green would bolster our chances greatly, but still a good opportunity to catch a look at a few good prospects.

Sam Froling is looking to have another productive international tournament which is typical for him. He has a level of poise and a skill level in the post that is rare at this age. 6 assists was great to see. I think the next step for him offensively is being more of a threat as a shooter, and that's going to be imperative to any NBA chances.

For the life of me, I don't understand the appeal of Lee starting over Wigness. Nothing against Lee, but he had 2 and 2 in 18 minutes against Canada. His impact on the court feels minimal when contrasted to when Tamuri comes on. Wigness actually started off struggling with an airballed 3 and a TO iirc, but his PnR passing, general incisiveness as a driver, overall scoring ability (including 3 triples), and super active defense just pop off the screen. I'm praying he keeps growing because he's got legitimate NBA traits.
