WA SBL - July 2019

Enjoy watching SBL games with my grand kids. Been on this forum quite a few times over the past few months. But disgusted of late with the rubbish on here. So thinking why bother to come back on here. Lot of posters need to have a good hard look at what they are saying - great promotion of a great family sport - NOT !!!!!!

new thread folks https://www.hoops.com.au/forum/45606-the-sbl-august-2019-thread/

Can Giants upset Lakeside?

Years ago

It's pretty clear now the last six posts above were all made by the same guy, i.e. the Perthworld impostor/"enuf"/Cheech/anon et al. So sad.

Years ago

So I guess the new nickname for Lakeside is druggies? Since "b**** b******" caused outrage yet these serious allegations haven't had any pushback at all.

if your hinting that hussey and barrow are the cause then why did geraldton do so well with them there?

Anonymous

I know for a fact that the "core group" of players would leave or sit out the season if the GM took over the coaching gig at Cockburn.

doesnt mean they cant release him from his contract

Willetton would be smart to release black from his contract now and hire nener

Cockburn will not conform!

You wouldn't take it on?

Why?

Because Cockburn doesn't conform to what everyone else says SBL is all about?

Everyone else - Winning/Money/Egos

I would say that the politics would have a lot to do with the past previous men’s coaches and Nener leaving
Funny that they had no budget but managed to score a great sponsorship and car from Honda and put on a paid GM
If the GM doesn’t give himself the coaching role don’t be surprised if it’s the Van Lits .....

Anonymous
Years ago

Parsons had the same budget as Nener just used it to get working holidays visas and found the imports jobs
Hardly would say it’s career suicide since he went on to win another championship within two years
Agree that the GM would’ve set this up for himself to take the men’s role. Nener will be better off at another club

Years ago

fluer mcintrye for the womens position.

Anonymous
Years ago

Interesting that both of the Cougars Head Coach positions will be vacant in the off-season. I feel for Nener as I think given the limited budget he has / had, he did very well considering. Who do we think takes over down at the Den in 2020 for both the Men's and Women's programs?

Wonder if the GM will hand himself one of those jobs?

As far as I know no moderators have ever bothered with this thread.

Haha, good point.

@enuf Alright well I apologise for the Lakeside nickname. You don't seem to understand however that most of the posts under my nickname are being done by someone else pretending to be me and the mods are on holiday at the moment. Just ignore it.

Tigers really underachieved with the level of investment and the roster they had this year.
Considering they had 2 imports and 2 'fringe NBL players' as has been talked about above as well as a roster that has a high level of experience and what many would believe to be a high profile coach, to miss the playoffs is a real under performance

It goes to show there is more to it than just spending money to recruit high level players. Ironically both the Tigers high level aussies in Scott and Hussey are Cougars juniors. Cougars next crop of elite juniors all jumped ship from Willo to Cockburn. Will be interesting to see how that plays out in the next few years

I can't wait for the Wolves to make yet another Grand Final only to be Etto'ed and lose.

womens qtr final predictions.

lakeside vs suns ( 2-1 )

its a obvious statement but whoever shoots the 3 ball the best wins this match-up . both teams play a similar style in offence. lakeside will be too big and control the boards which will be enough to get over the dangerous suns.

Mandurah vs rocko ( 2-1 )

no bigger rivalry then this one ! can rocko turn the tables after the magic knocked them out in qtr final play last season after being the higher seed?. can rocko contain the dynamic backcourt of milo and brown ? can Mandurah contain the big 3 of boag, allen and garbin ? Mandurah never been beaten in a finals game at their new venue , this will be enough to get them over the line.there will be some bruises in this matchup.

hawks vs wolves ( 2-0 )

the hawks are the hottest team in the competition and are smashing teams to bits - ambar land will battle her big heart out in the paint but she will get worn down by McKay Donovan and burton and Teasdale.
if priyni denehey and belcher can find some range and they can shut cherry down they might get close .

senators vs tigers ( 2-1 )

with the senators getting back villegas and Hepburn and possibly hooper they have got to many options in offence for the tigers . barr is in great form and howard is capable of scoring big as well. tigers just don't have the consistent fire power to rack up a big score . senators play a fast pace high scoring game. if the tigers can slow it down to their tempo then they will get game 2 at home - they deserve to get 1- win for their efforts this season but it wont be enough to stop elimination.

Men’s first round predictions?

Wolves vs Suns - Braun didn’t play on the weekend. If he’s out Wolves 2-0 both games by 20+. With him still 2-0 wolves with games probably within 10 points

Lightning vs Giants - Upset could be on the cards here. Game 1 in kal is daunting for any opposition, think Giants take that one. If lakeside win game 2 back them in for game 3. Lakeside 2-1 by a slim margin.

Gero vs Senators - gero in 2. Full team for first time all year expect them to win this series comfortably

Flames vs Hawks - PL hugely inconsistent all year. Rocko 2-1

There wasn't much further back to go from when Triscari had them

2 x QF with Triscari
None with Thompson

Years ago

The lady cougars have always been garbage, dating back to the district competition. They have had zero success in the SBL. They made four straight grand finals in the 1980s but have never won a single piece of silverware

Years ago

didn't Lee leave for work related reasons? she was a teacher at CCGS. I think she got a teaching gig on the sunshine coast

Years ago

I don't get thompsons excuses - keisha lee has left but is playing on the sunshine coast in the QBL ,why would she leave?. hartmann only got here half way thru the season - so what! get organised and have your imports ready to go for the first game. they have gone backwards in a big way since triscari has left - also have lost priestley , miotti .
something is not working.

Random why did you leave the radio show? You have shown more insight in one post than the entire year's coverage of the women's competition on that show this year. It always feels like the three presenters are all trying to compete for who can talk the most, not to mention the poor jokes which i can only assume must be a perry lakes inside joke thing, otherwise its just terrible like Josh Garlepp's Hair (Stop trying to look like Conan O'Brien mate) Hopefully if there is any sense in the world, or at least from bwa - you will do the play by play again for the grand finals which i feel you did very well last year with Fleur and Mark.

Years ago

great insight random.

what will throw a spanner in the works is as follows.

Kalamunda will beat the wolves

hawks will beat the tigers.

Years ago

So I see the bible bashers are most likely going to finish 1st in both the SBL and WSBL above Wolves in 2nd. How much are they spending in comparison to Joondalup?

Women's Finals Outlook - Week 20 Games of note:

Cockburn (11th) @ Perth (9th)
- Perth MUST win to have any hope of snatching 8th position from the Suns, who would then need to lose to the Wolves on Saturday night to be relegated to 9th as Perth own the season H2H (+7) over the Suns
- Redbacks on a 3 game losing streak but did beat the Cougars by 20 down at the Den earlier in the season
** Perth to Win comfortably and keep their Finals hopes alive for rookie coach Craig Allen

Lakeside (1st) @ Rockingham (7th)
- Flames can not finish any lower than 7th but could finish 6th with a win if the Hawks go down to Willo on Saturday night, with Rocko holding that H2H over the Hawks
- The defending champs guaranteed to finish as Minor Premiers and secure home court advantage throughout the Finals at the Church yet again. Lakeside won the first matchup between these two teams comfortably by 20+ earlier in the season
** Lakeside defeat the Flames on the road, meaning the Flames can only finish 6th if the Tigers defeat the Hawks on Saturday

Warwick (2nd) @ Mandurah (4th)
- Arguably the most important game of the round with both teams entering this one with a 14-7 record and all to play for here
- Interestingly the last time the Senators beat a Finals bound team this season, was all the way back in Week 11 with a 25 point win over the Tigers at Warwick. The Senators also won the first game of this matchup by 13, but the Magic are now on an incredible 8 game winning streak stretching back to Week 13.
** At home and with that impressive win streak, i'll go with Mandurah to move to a 15-7 record and leapfrog the Senators in the process

Hawks (6th) @ Tigers (5th)
- Willetton currently +12 on the H2H after winning their Week 6 clash at Bendat. If Tigers win, they hold H2H over Wolves, but lose H2H to Senators & Magic
- If Hawks lose and Rockingham lose, Hawks would drop to 7th on H2H
** Tigers to win their final game on their old home court before the move across to the new Showcourt in 2020, defeating the Hawks by 6

Suns (8th) @ Wolves (3rd)
- Huge ask here for the Suns to keep their Finals hopes alive, knowing that they will know the result from the night before in the Perth game as to whether or not they need to win to keep their Finals aspirations alive
- Wolves with H2H over those around them, could secure home court advantage with a win here and results going their way. Wolves won their game in the Hills earlier in the season by 14
** Suns to lose and heartbreakingly get knocked out of the playoff race, going down by 15

R@nD0m's Final WSBL Ladder

1. Lakeside 17-5
2. Joondalup 15-7
3. Mandurah 15-7
4. Warwick 14-8
5. Willetton 14-8
6. Rockingham 13-9
7. Perry Lakes 13-9
8. Perth 10-12

R@nD0m's WSBL Quarter Finals

QF1 - Lakeside vs Perth (Lightning 2-0)
QF2 - Joondalup vs Perry Lakes (Wolves 2-0)
QF3 - Mandurah vs Rockingham (Magic 2-1)
QF4 - Warwick vs Willetton (Senators 2-1)

A league needs to be of a standard that justifies it being a development league - it can't be so far off the pace of the NBL that its not respected or seen as a quality league. Otherwise the best talent (i.e. the ones we are trying to develop) will leave and play elsewhere (NBL1, NZNBL etc). We already see this but imagine if you took away the imports - which talented young players would want to play in such a crumby league?

Also, its OK for a state league to have multiple purposes - development is one. It also offers talented players the chance to play at the highest level (outside of the NBL) in their state. It also has a community / club element.

It is oversimplifying to say it needs to be one or the other, or that to be a development league you can't have imports.

Finally - re last comment about whoever wins having the best imports... this is far from true - see Perry Lakes last season, Cockburn 2016 and many other examples.

Years ago

What's the difference between those two options?

Although even first we would lose in the GF anyway with the master choker in charge. *sigh*
