Hume City and MtGambier to be added to NBL1

Any update on this?

I thought the idea was to stop those aussies playing in the nznbl and have them play in the nbl1 so that it is the best winter league. It won’t be unless those players can be attracted back and stop those contemplating the move. There needs to be changes as I suggest above for that to occur. While money has some role to play if the competition was of a higher standard and money similar most would stay.
If I was nz I would alter their rules to allow more aussie players to get a gig.

Clear Larry trying to stop the league competing against his nbl1 by. It allowing aussie teams to play in the league. That should be nz next step.

We are already seeing people go back to there old junior clubs and a lot of youth making a step up. It’s great, I don’t see big v lasting much longer.

I think quantity is better than quality for nbl1.
The high/mid level players will play in the nz nbl and all the bench dwellers and prospects will play in nbl1.
Enormous amount of kids drop out after u18s or u21s so the current league (with a lot of teams and soon to be more) makes it easier to identifying kids to make the next step because all associations will pretty much end up with an nbl1 team and they can draw kids from there own junior programs. Before, other clubs had to scout prospects from other associations and some are not willing to travel an hr from Geelong to Knox a few times a week to play.

I see why you don't post often Newy.

greggo i guess what i am saying in another way is that lets not have a weekend tournament but rather a whole season.

the old seabl was clearly the best league outside of the nbl. now that has gone it's clearly the nbl1 league. we don't need a three day tournament at a high cost to clubs who cant afford it to tell us that.

i agree with you we need "..pathways, creating an elite level to strive for, development etc" perhaps you might care to explain how a weekend tournament provides this.

what does provide for it is an elite level 2nd tier competition that runs in the off season of the nbl. this provides a pathway for the elite from all over the country to go and play in for a genuine season. it provides an elite level to strive for, it provides for development. Do you suggest otherwise?

we basically have it now with the nbl1 league. in my view this simply needs some adjusting to make it more 'elite'. we need our upcoming aussies and those who are on the bench in nbl teams a place to play strong competitive basketball in the off season where they can get serious minutes which will lead to improvement in the individual players which in turn improves the nbl.

this in my view can be achieved by reducing the number of teams in the nbl1 to 10-12 teams. that alone will make for a higher standard competition. it should only include teams who have financial capacity to pay to a certain minimum salary cap. it clearly needs to be victorian based but that doesnt mean there shouldnt be a team from tasmania, sa, nsw or act, just most will be from vic.

i mentioned mt gambier because they seemingly (NZ bid) have money. Dont we want to be attracting people/clubs with money to basketball rather than turn them away? adding a travel component of competing to a league tincreases professionalism and develops players in readying for the next league in becoming use to regular travel and playing real road games.

in an ideal world it would be awesome to think that each state could have an elite level competition which are all similar in standard. if that could occur then a end of season tournament would be great. unfortunately that simply will never happen. achieving the same is significantly dictated to by population and money. it has been proven of years and years at all levels that the other states can not compete with the vic leagues and players. therefore what is needed is an elite level competition such as a condensed nbl1 with teams with money that the elite players from all states will gravitate.

you say the arguments against an 'aba' tournament are weak, i still cant see where you have put forward your strong argument for it other than saying you have inside info and it will happen that isnt an argument that it should.

so everybody is simply meant to agree with you greggo?

what would be the point of the "aba" tournament? Is simply so that the NBL1 teams could gloat how could they are when they flog everyone year after year?

I dont get why the clubs in other states would want to participate. although you might be able to shorten each season to accomodate it, there is still a significant costs to teams budgets for travel and accomodation for those teams in the league. many teams in other states just dont have the budget to meet such expense. if you dont believe me look at the SA teams who supposedly cant afford one trip to mount gambier per year.

you suggest a tournament over 3 days, where would this be held? presumamble not in WA. how much would in cost for their teams to compete? you must be dull if you think the simple answer is just reduce the season by a week.

The idea of conference Champions playing off sounded great in theory back in the ABA days. Unfortunately I have first hand experience of the fact that the SA teams regularly got belted! Great eye opener for us though.

Because the few NBL (players) that are left playing NBL1 are needed for their own teams NBL pre season.
Let's have a 1 week shorter competition? You do realise the implications of that don't you?

is it Hume City or is it a collection of several close associations?
3 or 4 associations putting in $$$.... imagine the politics on who controls what !!!

Nothing new with the ABA

But Streaming wasn't a strong suit of the ABA back then or available.
Better use this season of media, panel show 'overtime' has been good to give players, clubs and sponsors exposure.

Clubs are also more savvy with this sort of thing now, engaging sponsors and the like to create a more professional image.

Yeah a sweet 16 tournament would be great!

Surely that would get national TV coverage. Could be like a carnival of basketball over a week or two weekends.

Streaming of every game is awesome. Would be good to see the nbl1 national tournament at the end.
Maybe top 2 teams from sa, wa and the top four from the other 3 conferences. 16 team final series.

Would also like a COE for every conference. 12 best boys and girls u20y.o from there state. The current 11-12 players total is just not enough anymore and sitting on the bench for local associationsmdoesnt help them develop quicker.

Great Move.

No team in that region of Victoria, best club in a position to move up. Money, stadium and were previous ABA

Great to have Mt Gambier back in, hopefully they come back with a chip on the shoulder and tool up to smash everyone!
