BIG V FINALS - 2019
Soooooooooo
Who wins a championship this weekend?

Put 2 imports in blackburn side then heath would only average 10 points a game in 25 minutes instead of 20 in 35 minutes

Yes thank you^ BIG V FINALS
Who is the closest matchup of all divisions? Picks for divisions? Best local players in grand finals? Anything

Can we get back to the title - BIG v FINALS

How would Mckinnon be without their imports?

#756796
Blackburn only had a poor year because they quite literally lost their top 6 players from last year and their coach left before the season started they had dominated division one for years before moving up, Heath hadn't previously played with the Men's team either.

Are facilities not even considered any more when deciding promotion ? The Warrandyte stadium is tiny and back in the day, you had to get changed in the office there before a game. As great as their team has been all season, surely this has to be considered when talking promotion ?

Anderson and Stith were the best players
Others have a case based on numbers etc. But those two were the individual best

Warrandytte will be entitled to a second import. Plus wouldn't there be other players that would be interested in playing for them that wouldn't want to play D1?
I'm sure they would be more than ok

"As for teams going into CM only Sunbury and Shep and Warrnambool would do well"
Warnambool didnt even make finals... Warrandyte finished on top and are playing in the championship series...

The reality is SCM, NBL1 and to an extent Div 1 don't need good youth league programs, if they need a point guard they will go and recruit one!
Youth League is a nice for good juniors to continue playing after VJBL, but it has little results on Big V Wins or Teams, senior players (good ones) that were there when a kid enters youth league are still going to be there when they finish, so the kid unless better after 2 years will have to go somewhere else anyway.
I think youth league has helped lots more kids chase JUCO & NCAA opportunities, it has become an amazing breeding ground for that elite level kid and has given opportunity for senior guys to keep playing senior hoops.
There is a closer connection to VJBL > YL than YL > BIGV

"Sunbury Youth to YL2 doesn't really work with the men in SC, shows how out of whack the club is" SMH
Sunbury are in YL1 and had a lesser year because of all the players they promoted to their senior team. Do you want to punish clubs for developing players then promoting them. The other team teams in the finals had next to no home grown players in their team.

To answer above, they left because they want a pathway to play at a higher level i.e. State Champ or NBL 1 NOT Big V division 1
Hence why the club has decided it is such a priority

Shows that if the club can spend money on the seniors it doesn't matter how bad the VJBL program is.

Sunbury Youth to YL2 doesn't really work with the men in SC, shows how out of whack the club is

There is no doubt some strong aussie talent in D1 and many of those players could play in SCM. The difference is the depth and the quality of imports. D1 teams will have 1 good aus and maybe 1 stud import. The better teams in SCM have two strong imports and several quality Aus

Chelsea did better than Coburg who were promoted to D1.
They beat Hume City who are in the Championship series.
The top 6 in D1 are all better than Blackburn and Corio Bay.

Chelsea would have made finals had they not stuffed up the paperwork for their imports who then missed a fair few games

I think BIGV will be careful with who they move up to SCM. Could really use a few more teams in SCM but with how Chelsea have gone this year, especially after their dominance in D1M, there is no point moving teams up just to ensure there is enough making up the numbers.

To answer Anon - No teams will be promoted from Big V to NBL1 so not sure what that looks like for SCM standard
There is interest in going up from Sunbury, Shepparton, Warrandyte, Bulleen, Keysborough, Westernport and Warnambool (their import now an Aussie and can afford 2 more). Could they all go up?
D1 would then be weak so probably bring up a few teams from D2

NBL1 and its NBL social media assistance along with the playing stocks has certainly seemed from the outside to hurt the SC comps
Div 1 and 2 will also be solid mid level comps with guys that will never play pro or even consider it, plus a few tasty imports from time to time.
Big off-season for the Big V having watched the changes above, NBL1 GF looked great at the SBC on Kayo (I couldn't make it)
McKinnon have to be short price favourite to win it all!
Hawthorn women what a close one.

CM - Mckinnon/Hume city (McKinnon leads 1-0)
CW - Keilor/Werribee
D1M - Warrandyte/Sunbury
D1W - Mildura/Hawthorn (Hawthorn leads 1-0)
D2M - Southern Peninsula/Camberwell
D2W - Pakenham/Melb Uni
Picks?

Thoughts/picks on all the grand finals?

Wasn't there talk of Monash returning?

There was latrobe uni and monash uni in big v but they folded

Given RMIT's success and Melbourne Uni have a long successful history in Big V, will we see any other Universities join Big V next season?

RMIT's import Stephen Coffey was really good later in the year, that was what was missing for them preseason and early games. I'd back RMIT to be amongst the top few teams next year in div 2 as Coffey has already resigned.

Looking forward to the three game series between Geelong v Ballarat D1 YLM, this is going to be a tough rivalry style of series and since the Miners killed off any chance of a dream series between the end of era Stingrays v Supercats I am sure there will be some added spice in the coming games...
Wish the D1 women's Bellarine team the best of luck in their final against Hawthorn, going to be tough but they earned their chance!

RMIT were really good later in the year. Good on them

^^RE: D2M was also the least accurately debated div I’ve ever seen during practice match months
RMIT was supposed to never win a game, won 11 and was in the middle of the comp
Mildura was supposed to be world beaters and they lost 6 games and finished outside the top 2 (still very much a contender I know)
Altona had multiple instances/posts referring to them being a legit contender, they were one of the worst teams in the comp
Barkley from Camberwell was “5th best player on his team” and would average 6PPG, averages 21 and is an MVP/All Star 5 candidate

Isn't it fairer and better if the refs dont know the teams or players that way you wont have refs that hold a grudge against certain players or the other way if they favour certain imports which happens.

McKinnon will win SCM

How about some picks for each division? What div is the closest?

Probably, the issue is those refs wouldn’t have any idea about the teams. I’m all for the best refs getting the games but it should be the best refs that have referees that division all year. What’s the point of panels is you don’t use them?

So the finals refs especially for the CM & CW will be interesting, no doubt they will allocate refs from NBL1 to come back and ref Big v finals when they haven’t reffed a single Big v game all year! Teams get used to the shitty refs all year then they give you refs that haven’t reffed 2PO in ages. Let’s see them ruin the games like they did last year, this competition is becoming the laughing stock of Aus basketball

How hard is it for big v to get the final ladder standings for the season correct. Glaring errors in most divisions.

The whole top 6 in div 2 would have beaten the bottom 4 teams in div 1 at least and those teams beat higher placed div 1 teams in practice matches.
They would not come close to the top 5 teams though

Big v has collingwood in the fixture for week one finals in div 1 men. I'm pretty sure bellarine got 6th

Have it on good authority Whittlesea that will still be in D1M next year

ha ha and you must be someone involved in the club responsible for bringing them down down down

Whittlesea's choice of imports the last couple of years has been terrible.

It's happened to many teams in the past where they spend up big win titles and then a few years later the players have moved on club runs out of money and the team drops big time.

Fair criticism of the Whittlesea coach. More criticism needs to be levelled at the decision makers on hiring, past results would have shown that not getting whatever was advertised.

Ok well now that the finals are set for BIG V, who is everyone tipping?? In each division?
SCM - McKinnon
SCW - Keilor
D1M - Western Port
D1W - Hawthorn
D2M - Southern Peninsula
D2W - Pakenham

I'm sure quoting a result that everyone can look up and see is an 'incorrect statement' he still took a SCM team to Div 1 and then the bottom of Div 1 and is saved by a technicality.
Finals will be interesting to see who gets promoted especially the Div to SCM, this comp has lacked some punch with the top 4 dominating at times, and some teams talk 'on here' of going NBL1 keen to see.

On a side note the whittlesea mens coach performance takes some beating. Taking the mens team from champ relegated to div 1, then relegated to div 2 after finishing last this season. If that wasnt enough for some reason he coached the womens side today to a 45 point loss. This bloke will go down as the worst coach in big v history.

It looks like another tough round to tip. I can make arguments for pretty much every team to get the W this week.
Sydney v Wollongong
Sydney have had an upset or close to upset in pretty much every game. Their guards are showing us Harvey won't be missed and the imports can also light it up. Could they get a massive upset here? They play better away than at home though so maybe not?
Wollongong are the in form team and if they can keep up their structures and shooting percentages it's hard to see who will beat them.
Melbourne v Adelaide
Melbourne showing what they are capable of last week although against the winless Crocs. If Flynn is ready and contributes Cedric Jackson like numbers in his first game maybe the Tigers could get the upset here and their second win?
Adelaide is a case of the same story all season. One of the best teams on paper, if they can pull it all together they should be able to take the win home, but can they?
Townsville v New Zealand
Townsville are in struggle town and it's no secrete. What makes this interesting is they seem to play well against the Breakers and are very very desperate to get a win especially at home.
New Zealand should get this but with a double this round and the Cairns game maybe more important in the scheme of things may be more focused on that game and may rest some of the older legs here?
Cairns v New Zealand
Cairns dont look as organised as they did last year although they have a better team. I think they are starting to get it together but the winless crocs pushing them to OT raises some doubt? They dont drop many at home.
New Zealand backing it up within 24 hours and as above may be suffering with their older team. BUT it is NZ and they are a great team and it's hard to go against them.
Adelaide v Perth
Adelaide get a little more rest than NZ but are still on the back of a double weekend. I dont think they will struggle on the fitness side of things but will want to get out to a fast start to take this one.
Perth showed their vulnerability last week. After a massive away start to the season (and preseason) has it all caught up to the Wildcats or was the week off a factor? I think they will be very embarassed by last weeks game and all be keen to put in a big effort this week.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to write out some thoughts I was having while looking at the schedule and considering my tips this week.
Thoughts?
