36ers new training home

Not much confidence from boti about the move. Very strange decision.

Years ago

Boti not happy about the 36ers turning their back on Titanium Security Arena.

When the relocation first was mooted, the 36ers planned to retain Titanium Security Arena as their training venue, which made perfect sense.

But by moving game nights out of The Arena, they left Adelaide Lightning remaining as the venue's major tenant and, therefore, the WNBL Grand Finalist had priority in selecting training times.

They chose 10am-midday, which also is the 36ers' preferred training time. But here's the rub.

Lightning do not even start their preseason schedule at The Arena until Monday, September 2, so that was virtually a month the 36ers could have stayed in their preferred timeslot and environment.

And The Arena management did offer the 36ers a permanent 1pm-3pm booking going forward. Having checked in with Jacob Holmes, CEO of the Australian Basketballers Association, he confirmed there was no player union-based impediment to teams training in the afternoon instead of the morning.

Well no, clearly it wasn't because the 36ers could be training at TSA in their preferred timeslot until September 2, and then continuing on there for the rest of the season from 1-3pm.

Yesterday, management wasn't talking and even gagged its players from speaking to the media.

Yes, another very smart move at a time when shifting games to AEC means you need to be building your fan base, not alienating a media which can help you achieve just that!

Honestly, the future for basketball looks truly bleak.

Half the premier league teams train in air conditioning, just not our professional team.
How do you know where all the nbl teams train?

Anonymous
Years ago

It's the point of going from purpose build basketball stadium to last century heritage shed.
But people complained about the TSA and everything about it. - so only got those miners to blame. Get back to TSA home of the sixers.get out of the home of the bearcats.

Years ago

Adelaide isn’t the only place that gets very hot and other than Perth I can’t think who else trains in air conditioning.

As mentioned infinitum for years, why don't they just air condition wayville, surely not too much. And when the show starts then they can train elsewhere for a few weeks. Surely when we get a string of 40 plus degree days it's a major safety issue training at Port Adelaide and can't see them cancelling, probably will go to one of Air conditioned stadiums.
At least they can practice corner 3s on court 2 now instead of stepping out of bounds.
Don't know too much about facilities in the back of house at enter centre, wonder what changerooms will be like or will it be exactly like visiting teams. One of those 1%ers, player comfort. Nice to have your own locker instead of lugging all your gear every game. Can't see the port having a comfortable room for gear and stuff.
And not sure if it's me but are the toilets there the smelliest in South Australia? Doesn't have to have to be made of Italian marble but maybe chuck a few glade air fresheners in there and some new paint.

Knock down from front entrance and don't stop until.all 4 walls gone. BSA please see some sense and get the sixers the facilities they deserve. Want the best performance don't we.

It could be just like one of Rocky movies when he had to fight Drago.
Instead of the luxury in AC gym etc, Rocky went off to Siberia and had to struggle without the home comforts. It worked for Rocky!

I seem to recall that Port stadium is not the only one to leak after recent heavy downpours.
The new courts at Port Adelaide are still a massive improvement and things look better than a few years ago.
I'm sure that Bearcats would love a new stadium but BSA pushed hard to be included in discussion/involvement re St Clair and replacing Hillcrest, so guess who missed out? Port / Enfield Council put all money behind replacing Hillcrest and now the cupboard is bare.

Will the players need to become members of the EFM gym to use gym equipment. Professional club moving into amateur clubs facilities. This after jacking up season ticket prices.

Port rec centre is still a wreck centre. Embarrassing and insulting. Perfect for district and premier league but seriously for fully professionally players... and to include Marion as alternate f... me. That only helps make the port half decent. The sugarcoated turd is still a turd. BSA the sixers deserve better.get them I to st Clair at least. The guys are always there so obviously they happy with. It's modern it's clean its got decent facilities to have a crap in some comfortable. Goodluckat the port in that midget sized shithouse. Head injury coming your way.

Hawks train out the snake pit, hardly luxurious, good enough for Ball, get a grip Adelaide supporters you are soft lot.

Things could've changed since but I used to play at Port Adelaide/St. Ives Rec Centre in the early 90's and it was a hole. If I were a pro I would be insulted to train there.

Where do other clubs trai ? Hawks train out the snake pit, hardly luxurious, good enough for Ball, get a grip Adelaide supporters you are soft lot.

Drimic "We're not allowed to talk about it, maybe tomorrow." He told ninenews at Port Adelaide, yesterday.

Here, at Beverley, they trained 10am-1pm, most of the time.

Immanual facilitates are better than any the district clubs can offer. Yes the school built it but being a sport focused school may consider a joint venture. Has gym, courts and pool facilities , far from a amateur hour.

What's done is done and seemingly can't [or won't] be undone - certainly not this season - but it would be good to know what led to all this, purely as an aid to understanding and coming to terms with what presents as an unholy mess.

I don't know if it's true or not but a few people said on here The Sixers owner is dating a government politician and as the AEC is govt owned unlike TSA the inference was she probably did the Sixers a good deal so likely cheaper to play there.

Even though the Sixers said they were still going to train and have their admin based at TSA including a pre-season game played there each year by the looks of things the TSA owners may have increased the Sixers rental costs so they're going to off to train at Port Adelaide instead.
Years ago

As elsewhere, I await the 'story behind the story'.

Given the situation as it stands the 36ERS team and support staff have no option but to make the best they can of the hand they have been dealt, though I too wonder about some of the announced decisions re training venues, and their coms people have to present what they are faced with in the best possible light.

However, while the situation no doubt won't change at this late stage, I believe the 'real' story is why they left a purpose-built facility [which they almost never filled with spectators] that also housed their admin and most support facilities, for a 'shared' facility] which means they will have to compete for space/time [read scheduling problems], that is no more than a couple of kilometres closer to the city & essentially next door to the soccer stadium [read traffic congestion and parking issues], with worse vehicle access and no better, possibly worse, access to parking.

And now they are going to be hiring office space down port road and have their players driving all aver the metro area for training.

What's done is done and seemingly can't [or won't] be undone - certainly not this season - but it would be good to know what led to all this, purely as an aid to understanding and coming to terms with what presents as an unholy mess.

Re the person who said the courts are better at Port Adelaide than St Clair - the St Clair floors are FIBA certified engineered wood Haro system which is much more similar to a lot of the floors professionals play on nowdays than the old school traditional wood sprung style at Port Adelaide.

While many (including me) prefer the old traditional wood setups in no way is Port Adelaide closer to modern professional surface than St Clair.

Anonymous
Years ago

These stadiums are district stadiums yes they require investment but they do their job. To move a professional team into these is ridiculous.

They would be better served forming a partnership with Immanuel or similar and actually have modern professional facilities. Either that or work out the differences with Titanium and make it work.

Amateur hour again.

Marion being mentioned lol. Just give them the keys to Hillcrest when North leave.

Benefits of port adelaide.
1. FREE
2. Court 1 - floors better than st clair.
3. Rings/backboards on crt 1 and 2 - nicer than st clair.
4. Parking

Toilets - Poor
Showers - Poor

Ninenews ran the story, but the players weren't allowed to talk.
Al Green 'They couldda found a better place' He told ninenews.

Years ago

Talking to (now) former players, they were generally impressed with the stadium and the setup and how everything was in one spot at the Sixers. One told me how at one club they never got to practice on the game court, they would use several different courts, gym in another area, support staff in another site, etc etc

The Port Adelaide site is a BSA site so quite possibly some deal there for cheap hire (?)

Games at the Arena were well attended and the move to the Entertainment Centre will see an initial surge of whinging (hey, change is change), but long term a larger stadium should see the Sixers better off.

While probably not ideal, rotating training venues so the team has at least one training in the stadium of a district club strengthens the ties to the grass roots.

Years ago

It’s all part of the Sixers mantra, them against us, look we are the poor cousins let’s beat everyone else up. It might work.

Years ago

Here's the explanation:

They have a purpose built basketball stadium which they can use for training. It has gym facilities nearby.

Management moves the team to a more expensive venue for game nights. Access will be better for some, but sightlines and game night experience will take a massive hit.

Team no longer has access to previous training facilities, so moves to a stadium with one full sized court, and no air conditioning and no other facilities a pro team requires. I've not seen a facility in Melbourne as shit as the stadiums 36ers are moving their training to.

Team then spins this as some big improvement.

Years ago

Can Adelaide people clarify a couple of things
- were every game at Titanium sold out?
- if not why not? access? poor facilities?
- does Titanium have a gym and pool etc that people are saying Port doesn't have?
- moving to a venue in the city, does that make getting to the venue easier? eg. Adelaide oval seems well attended for football
- assume everyone that is complaining about cost cutting has a membership or a corporate box or financially giving to the club?

SEM train at the state basketball centre in Melbourne and that doesn't have a gym, a pool etc for off court stuff. Not sure on the locker rooms etc, haven't seen them.

Building a purpose built training headquarters is expensive (especially if it is like the one the Celtics just built) so maybe you have to go with what the government has built?

sorry, just trying to understand the Adelaide environment and the 6ers set-up.

Anonymous
Years ago

Is it simply more cost cutting from this management? Move away from a purpose built stadium with all the required amenities to move to West which has one full size court and changeroom facilities that were last upgraded in the 70’s.

If you were going to move the ARC or St Clare’s make much more sense from a basketball point of view, or the Lights will be ready before they neee to move out of Titanium.

Years ago

Quite the spin in that release before you get to the Lightning bit.

Agree hard to be really positive despite bsa spin. Be great for news reporters to take public on tour of the great facilities at Marion and the port. Our elite team in facilities that every school and college has better access to. Not good enough. Sixers deserve far better. Far better. Why has itcometo this.

Years ago

It was getting a bit of a rub on Channel 9 for being primitive and run down. Weeds in the gutters etc.

likefor like training venues. EC great but not in best interest od basketball. Come to Adelaide world class training venues. Marion. Please. Port omg. premier leagues teams havebetter access. Not happpy not at all and lighning omg.

Bad run stadiums are the key factor here. ARC be ideal with gym facities and pool for rehab. Marion please no way. That cant be true.

Years ago

Why not just train at the given time and available at the powerhouse. The women should get preferential treatment if they are full time there. Either train in the afternoon or night. Now they appear to be in a low class venue.

Anonymous
Years ago

Sounds like they're scrambling just to find a place to train. Sure there are excellent new stadiums around, just not bsa run. At least the port and Marion have new flooring but still way off being ideal venues to train as a professional team. Again, what happens during extreme heat? Training called off? Occ health and safety otherwise. Looks like they're trying to polish a turd. Imagine new players showing up to Marion, they'll be WTF.

Plus no one else using courts so fills in time.

Pasadena is a school so not ideal timing and Wayville not available for around the show not ideal, new courts at Port Adelaide make it a good proposition with most players living in western suburbs helping too

Wayville and Pasadena most ideal I’d have thought

Like the spin of high quality stadium facilities. Haven't been in the changerooms and showers at Port Adelaide for a while but I the Romans had better facilities. And to even mention Marion in same article is going a bit far.
Wonder what will happen during summer heat waves, train pre dawn? Or will BSA finally try to summer proof some stadiums.
Would have thought Wayville would have been top choice and get air conditioning finally.
And these ambassadors, be interesting how the split will be, short straw will be trekking to the farther clubs. But good initiative for a change.

I am wondering if gordons knee injury claim is legit. The team doctor says its fine, it was perfect when he was trying out for the olymppic team.

Another specialist says that he doesn't need micro surgery and will be back in 4-6 weeks.

4-6 Weeks takes him close to the trade deadline.

Should the Hornet GM trade him for some picks?

Anthony Davis is the future of the hornets team, and for him to stay in my opinion they need to lose this gordon and build around davis with players who want to be there.
