NZNBL player Taylor Britt Wildcats DP

In agreeing with the above anon Daz was correct. By saying at least one team the only way he could have been incorrect is if the competition wasn't down any teams.

Is three teams. Maybe studying up a little before spewing your usual uneducated opinion

Apparently playing very well in NZ:

It's possible the NZNBL standard isn't the same as previous, with at least one team sitting out the abridged season, and limited (or no) access to Aussies and other imports.

I hope he returns and continues to develop. He could become the next backup PG.

As I said, they do give young locals a go. They have an entire squad, and many of those will go onto College or NBL opportunities.

These are guys they're taking a punt on as their depth and potentially next roster spot. It's really best available, relative to their requirements and future potential.
They are experimenting with Wani at the point, but its not a bad idea to have the next candidate lined up.

Just like the AFL have 40 man squads, and probably 10 of those will never make it, but they still take the best they can when their pick in the draft comes up.

You sign the best potential as DPs guys who may end up as full roster players for your team so a young local vs an average 23yo old nz player would be a better way imo

D2.0, correct the Cats have a good record with developing local WA DPs into Wildcats roster players, so why not continue developing the pipeline. Realistically, DPs only get 1-2 mins in blow out games but get to develop their game with coaching and training with the team. This year Cats signed Pozoglou (from east coast)as a DP who is 23 and unlucky not to be on an NBL roster so he would be the back up for injury etc who could play minutes if required. Just reckon they could have given an opportunity to younger local player instead of an almost 23 year old Kiwi who, as you said above “hope is a long term prospect, as he still seems pretty raw”

"Disappointing the cats didn't offer DP spot to a young local player"

What, you mean like Luke Travers?

Wildcats literally do more Local & Community Development that most other teams.
They run a development squad that is largely composed of young WA talent. They also give training opportunities to SBL players.

These DP slots are formal adjuncts to the NBL Roster. As such they are given to the best available (youngish) talent on the periphery of the League. They have a good history of developing local talent, including Jervis, Hire, Bague, and now Wani.

NBL can't support itself, much less a secondary league.

SBL is actually ok, in terms of the spread of clubs, including regional teams, and somehow manages to keep kicking along.
Quality wise, its never going to be close, but thats ok.

People always bang on about wanting second tier competitions, just a step below, but that never works, in any sport.

Where you have a MASSIVE competition, and can split it into divisions, sure, but we will never be there.

And at least with Basketball, there are other options out there.

Haven't seen him in action, but seems like an ok signing.
The inevitable injury to Martin will see Norton carrying the can, and Cotton sliding to PG at times, unless we can bring in a bonafide PG. Be interesting to see if he's actually up to playing any minutes at NBL level.

I don't know exactly how DP contracts work, but hopefully he's a long-term prospect, as he still seems pretty raw.
