2019/20 WA SBL Offseason Thread
With the season getting closer, time to start a new thread....
WA SBL - February 2020

So barred from Div 1 and now sacked? Truly amazing. Someone do the Heimlich maneuver on him already.

Who cares about NBL1... Let's discuss the fact that Etteridge and East Perth have already parted ways. I mean we know he is a severe choking hazard in GFs but now a new skill of choking in pre-seasons as well, come along now Etto you go too far with the skill development mate.

Its been on the table a lot longer than just now kobeI'm sure it has, but it's still not surprising that a meeting this week resulted in a "no" given how late in the pre-season we now are.

Well that didn’t take long

The season starts in a month, I'm not sure why anyone expected it to happen this year.

Men Top 8
Warwick
Perry Lakes
Rockingham
Geraldton
Joondalup
Lakeside
Perth
Goldfields
Women Top 8
Joondalup
Kalamunda
Warwick
Lakeside
Perry Lakes
Willetton
Rockingham
Perth
Men's MVP - Ritchart (Flames)
Women's MVP - Barr (Senators)

Blitz in 6 weeks.
Big improvers / sliders?
Best / worst imports?
Early MVP candidates?
MSBL: Perth to slide Out of 8, Cougars in. South West can’t get much worse.
WSBL: Mandurah and Kalamunda slide out, Redbacks and Cougars in. East Perth marginally better, south West only get worse in year 2 for Grover.

Hussey also played SBL at Wolves and was a Cockburn junior. Ultimate journeyman.

Hussey to Rocko. That makes it Gero (2016-17), Redbacks (2018), Willo (2019), and now Rocko (2020). How's the loyalty.

Wow totally shocked! Something smells pretty fishy about that Wolfpack Vagina signing? Sorry Vaiagina. Can anyone say salary cap? I’m disappointed we never got to see a Vagina play against Willo, Hymen would of been a great match up!

I won't elaborate any further as it's not my place to say at the moment as negotiations are still taking place. So does that mean NBL1 West for 2020 isn't a done deal, as has been claimed above?

As someone who has attended the meetings regarding the NBL1 proposal, I can state that the previous poster is incorrect. For starters the cost is nowhere near that, commentators will not be compulsory, and the clubs will have a transition period covering multiple years.
I won't elaborate any further as it's not my place to say at the moment as negotiations are still taking place. My club is fully in favour and we see this as a perfect opportunity for the SBL to go to the 'next level', and not be left behind or forgotten like we already are in some ways compared to the East.

Cougars:
F - JT Harris (import)
F - Field
F - Travers
G - Pesava
G - Chan
Bench
FC - Holmes
GF - Knight
GF - Bell
G - Van Lit
G - Vinci
G - Jake Harris
Only going with one import and don't have a true centre. Status of Pesava is unknown and Holmes, Bell or Knight with slip into that starting line-up if Pesava doesn't play.

Might as well start at the top with the defending champs. Hunt and Alipate are gone, and that's two massive losses as quality 'Aussies' are difficult to replace for the regional teams. Inger returns and the rumour is that Wundenberg and Ralph are playing on. The big question for the Buccs is what to do with the second import spot (if Lasher is returning as rumoured). At the moment they are looking a shadow of the 2019 championship team...
Starters
C - ?????
F - Lasher (import)
F - Inger
G - ?????
G - Dinardo
Bench
C - Wundenberg
F - Ralph
Do they get an import centre or guard?
And then who fills the other spot?

Imports so far....
Buccs - Colter Lasher - 6-7" forward
Cougars - JT Harris - 6-6" forward
Flames - Josh Ritchart - 6-9" forward/centre
Giants - Corey Hammell - 6-6" forward
Giants - Joshua Jones - 6-4" guard/forward
Lightning - Jack Isenberger - 6-2" guard
Senators - Justin King - 6-3" guard
Slammers - Jay Washington - 6-0" guard
Tigers - Patrick Burke - 6-7" forward
Anyone want to start predicting some starting 5's

Doesn't mean anything. There have been plenty of D2 players come over here after averaging 10-15ppg in college, and been 20+ppg scorers in the SBL. The majority of college players who average above 15ppg in their senior year generally either played in bad teams or played in a lesser conference that didn't see much defence.
Jones actually looks pretty good and has high efficiency scoring when you look at his stats. Just reading the Giants media release and he was a high school All-American nominee and started his college career at the University of Richmond (NCAA D1), so to get a scholarship there to begin with is something. And the conference he played in is one of the tougher D2 conferences going around.
A pretty good pickup I would say.

Don't know about the Giants' second import - looks average. Only 14ppg in NCAA D2

I would assume they will have a shooter lined up as their other import. With Hemmell, Tipene, the two Sudanese guys and another import, they will get their points. They've also got Ballantyne, Reid and Klasztorny and I've heard a rumour of another Mandurah player heading up there for work.

Giants to be a good rebounding team that's for sure. Malek was a top 5 rebounder this year, and they add Garrang who was one of the best per-minute revounder in the comp. And now Hammell who looks like he might bring Volkel type rebounding numbers.
But who is scoring the points?

King is working out with Stirling. He will be back for them.
No word out of teams like Willeton, Hawks, Joondalup yet. Not sure they will announce till closer to the season.

The only imports confirmed so far are
Buccs - Colter Lasher
Cougars - JT Harris
Flames - Josh Ritchart
Slammers - Jay Washington

Which teams have signed imports for next season?

Yes 2 are imports but Burke and Bowie were among the best combo of imports last season. Hard to replicate.

^^^ Two of them are imports who get replaced anyway, so shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Giants with a decent rebuild considering they lost Humphries Burke Holloway and Bowie from their starting 5. Imports will be key to if they can make playoffs again
