“And tourism Australia get some free advertising as well.“
If Larry’s smart (which appears likely) with his marketing, they’ll approach tourism bodies (national, state and local) for short tourist spots to play in game breaks, highlighting local attractions.
Cycling on tv does this really well, it’s an integrated travelogue with the commentators spraining the stage venues almost seamlessly into the comments. Basketball could do something more like the Australian open (tennis and golf) versions.

"In a new initiative, Sportsbet will align with the new post-game TV show Live @ Hungry Jack’s Presented by Sportsbet on ESPN, which will provide viewers with a unique insight into the NBL."

Australian fans of Brazilian decent or heritage already following Didi in big numbers.

Was there an opportunity missed with the Illawarra Hawks not being included in the NBL x NBA tour?

That's great for the NBL even if the money is coming from outside of Australia, this Next Stars initiative has been a real winner for the league.

NBL owner Larry Kestelman said Facebook was paying a rights fee for the deal and, while he would not reveal the exact number, said it was “a significant amount”.
“This is part of our strategy of making the league the second-best in the world. As a result of that, it means we get more eyeballs from overseas watching the league, and there is a buzz about us now. So what that means is we think that it will not be long until we are generating more rights revenue from overseas than we do here.
“We are shown in 33 countries now, across various platforms, which we are very happy about.”

Because the yanks wouldn't be interested in watching any other teams than those with LaMelo Ball and RJ Hampton on their rosters.

Any reason it's just Illawarra and New Zealand games (that adds up to 52) rather than giving Facebook all the games?

Curious as to the amount we are talking. The closer the NBL can get to cost neutral production, the more sustainable the league will be. In turn, the coverage and reach offered to sponsors will hopefully mean more sponsors, more money for league and teams to cover broader costs.

"the league and networks will share advertising revenue, which is the main source of revenue from the local broadcast deal."That's referring to the ESPN and SBS deals, not the Facebook deal.
Sounds more like the advertising is most of the revenue stream.

“the league and networks will share advertising revenue, which is the main source of revenue from the local broadcast deal.”
Sounds more like the advertising is most of the revenue stream. I’m not sure what those revenues would be like. Lotta $ in sports gear though (shoe sponsors might pay for ads).
Still better exposure in bigger markets though, compared to past years.

This sounds like it's more than just that ad-revenue share:
Facebook will pay a rights fee for this deal with the NBL. That's significant because the rights fee for the deal with local rights holders is infinitesimal; the league and networks will share advertising revenue, which is the main source of revenue from the local broadcast deal.

According to Olgun the NBL is actually getting a rights fee from the Facebook deal, unlike their domestic TV deal.

"The NBL as a league is still behind the Spanish ACB when it comes to domestic leagues."
The ACB deserves to be the best domestic league, but the gap to the NBL is smaller than it used to be. On any given day an NBL team could beat an ACB team, and their talent is spread across 18 teams rather than 9.
The NBL is right up there now as a domestic league, though the claim of best outside the NBA doesn't add up, that is clearly the Euroleague.

Agreed anon.
Eurocup / VTB United / Germany / Turkey / France / NBL --> all of a similar level.

VTB league plays plenty of money as well, there top teams would certainly give nbl top teams a run for there money, same as Turkey, Greece, France and Germany. Spain is the top of the heap though.

The NBL as a league is still behind the Spanish ACB when it comes to domestic leagues.
The EuroLeague is the #1 league outside the NBA. Then I would put the Spanish ACB next.
Then we can start discussing other likes like the NBL.
Good to have aspirations though.

"it will make a lot of $$$$$$ for Facebook and the NBL over the NBL season"
Maybe a $, but far from $$$$$$

Aren’t ESPN broadcasting games to the US?

NBL can stream games on Facebook anyway (see NBL Blitz)
What's different that makes this an agreement/partnership? I suspect this is a bit of a "We stream games into the US if you let us say we're in a partnership".
I imagine the value is in being "partnered" with a massive social media company.

"It also reinforces our status as the best basketball league in the world outside of the NBA "
Tell him he's dreaming.

Yeah stream today was useless, but that is completely different to proper NBL coverage

Hopefully there stream was better than, Friday was reasonable but today was very poor, we have to do better.
