NBL game goes viral
The millions of viewers will disappear once ball walks.This.
In the last 24 hours I've seen:
"The Hawks need to trade Ball to a better team."
"The Hawks should trade for some better players."
"Why are they playing at 3am? Why are people insisting this is being played in Australia when it clearly says "LA" on the court?"
"Ball looks good, but needs to get away from Lithuania or wherever it is in Europe that he's playing."
These aren't people that are going to care about the NBL in six months' time.

LK stole Cram's first love (Melbourne Tigers) and hasn't said a nice thing about NBL or LK since

The millions of viewers will disappear once ball walks. None of those ball hype fans are going to be converted to following the nbl. Too much nba to keep up with as is!

I'm very interested in how the league is going in terms of revenue vs expenditure and teams also. There's clearly been an increase in leveraging league sponsors through teams, whether it be more court stuff, on nbl tops for those without their own sponsors etc. etc.
I'd like to think the financials have become significantly better and they are on a good path both league and clubs wide to being more sustainable, even if some of this stuff may be one-hit-wonder.

Keep in mind that whilst American audiences are probably dependent on a continuing pipeline of next stars, local crowds are up too. If in the process of coming to a game or watching the game on TV they become more regular NBL fans then the LaMelo effect has been a success even if he's only a one and done.

My comments were in response to KETs questions in the first reply. If it sounds negative it's because none of the league growth strategies, including next stars, has shown by sign of being remotely sustainable.

anyone who sinks money into future seasons based on this season's results deserves to waste their cash. It's not like it's the only initiative or only reason for growth in the league. There have been solid crowds regardless. And even if the Ball fans ignore future Facebook feeds, there are still fans other imports.

Highly unlikely Next Stars is even a thing in a few years time.
The league have done well to maximise the best case scenario - Ball - but even if the NBA were not looking at changing the rules, Ball is such an outlier (wasn't eligible for college anyway, has way more hype than anyone else at that level) that anyone who sinks money into future seasons based on this season's results deserves to waste their cash.

Save for managing to get more high quality NBL Next Stars, the question i'm wondering is how much are the NBL benefiting both short term and long term.
What kind of $$$ does this translate to for the NBL now?
Sponsors will recognise that these kind of numbers won't be replicated year to year, they're unlikely to be the new standard, but perhaps the greater reach now will capture an increase in fans, increase in coverage that presents an increase in value for sponsors longer term from previous years, therefore commanding greater sponsorship revenue for the NBL?
