WNBl Round 4

Yeah the Flyers centre had her way inside. Boomers need more D out of Cayla and Ezi.

Side note, my first trip to the State Basketball Centre. Nice stadium but little more than a standard suburban gym, complete one way in car park access and being in the middle of nowhere with awful public transport access.

If any WNBL team ever played in a relatively central location I'd likely take a membership, but based where both Melbourne teams are, its a huge trek just to get to a single game.

Flyers were really good. Don't know how many easy lay ups they got on back door cuts. Just seemed as though Boomers couldn't stop them. Their big import was great too. Just an all round performance.

Cayla George with the big steal and pull up 3 in the first was pretty huge though. She certainly did her part to keep them in the game.

Can't believe the Boomers we're within 5 in the last minute. Felt like they were destroyed.

"Flyers still undefeated heading into Monday night's clash with the Boomers!"

I'm going along tonight so glad to see both teams undefeated going in. Should be a good one.

Definitely would be better had the Flyers not had to play only 24 hours earlier though.

Flyers have Maley who is a rebounding machine plays 3/4, but doesnt really do a lot more than that especially in a teram like this, Rowe who can hit that outside three when shes on but bit slow off the foot also plays 3/4, Tomlinson and Pizzey both play the 5, and thats it, their starters consist of Mercedes who runs the 5, Blicavs who runs the 4 but can also run the 5 and 3 spots, Ohea who is a 2/3 but posts up and can run the point, which leaves Mitchel Cole and Clydesdale running between the 1/2 spots, the Flyers bench was never going to be a big contribution to this team LOL.
Did they recruit well, you would probably say yes, can they sustain the entire season running basically 6 players...probably not, but then again Cole and Mitchel never seem to run out of energy, their big conserves her energy lol, Ohea always coasts along, so that leaves Blicavs and Clydesdale, both have been injury prone, Clydesdale took a hard knock last night...............tonight should be interesting.

Weird scheduling making the Flyers play 2 days in a row.
On an even playing field this is a blockbuster but it's not really a fair fight now with the starters all logging big minutes overcoming the Spirit yesterday.

Southside have been impressive but Melbourne should win tonight really. A week more rest is a pretty decent leg-up.

Fire look thin on paper but Seebohm runs some great stuff. They were right there with Melbourne for most of last week's game before having a costly bad couple of minutes.

Andy Stewart in trouble. Another horrible loss to an inferior team.

Ouch. It's a fine line between 4-1 and 1-4.

Quality win by the Fire. Very good at both ends, but I was especially impressed with their D.

Andrew Price (Lob Pass to Abercrombie) had a disturbing graph on his site recently showing trends in team points per game, and fouls per game across the years.

This 2013 season is the first season that the points to fouls ratio has gone under 2.0...

While there are many who don't mind a tough slogfest, the majority would presumably favour a more free-flowing and scoring game. That is, more points and fewer fouls, and a game that favours offence slightly before defence.

I think the NBL are in a tough position here because one way to quietly tweak this balance is to penalise the defence for bumping, holding and so on. That is, calling more fouls. Which doesn't really improve the spectacle in the short term, and possibly just encourages coaches to use their bench to absorb fouls.

What other answers are available to the league? Illegal defence?

Or maybe reducing the foul limit to four per game, but also remove the concept of players fouling out? No more watching benches battle in a second overtime, or seeing your stud centre ride the pine for the second and third quarters after picking up a third early foul. What if, after a fourth foul, every subsequent PF gave shots and possession?

(Ideally we could leave 40 vs 48 minutes out of this discussion.)
